They really c...Kate--these photos are spectacular! They really capture Maine in the fog. Cormorants are often mistaken for loons by folks not accustomed to coastal birds. Readers may be interested to know that cormorants are diving birds. They float low in the water and then dive under to feed on fish. The longer they are in the water, the lower they ride on the surface. The reason for this is that the microscopic structure of the feathers allows for 'wetting', which in turn allows for deeper and longer dives. Periodically, they need to get out of the water and perch somewhere with their wings outspread. This helps to dry the wing feathers. Ducks and gulls and other water birds rely on an oil gland which they stimulate to oil their feathers with their beaks. Cormorants, however, just "hang out".spindrift,mainehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08845805725532707460noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4296284051502496327.post-73725169237453800572012-07-30T19:52:28.610-04:002012-07-30T19:52:28.610-04:00Love these esp. the one where the birds posed so p...Love these esp. the one where the birds posed so perfectly for you.
