Blue

I was so happy when I came home from work today! It was a beautiful day and I had wonderful news to tell my husband about the rental property in Maine we’d had our hearts set on. I was informed today by the rental agency that it was available on the week we’d chosen and I couldn’t wait to give him the news.

And then I opened my e-mail.

The agency had written me to tell me that the 98-acre preserve that was adjacent to the property and which we’d use to get to the beach had just this week posted signs warning “no dogs”. So to get to the beach, we’d be breaking the law by taking George. And we’d planned on walking him through those wonderful Maine forests adjacent to the house!

I almost started to cry.

I have spent countless hours scouring real estate agency and VRBO sites in vain. We have a one week window of time when we can go and it’s closing in. We’re also confined to a set price that we cannot go over. Plus we have a pet. We want a water view. We want privacy. I so wanted my husband to enjoy a vacation in a place that he loves. And now we’re back to the drawing board.

I realize how lucky I am to be able to even think about taking a vacation this year, with our limited funds, but still . . .

I’m just a little blue. I thought I had it licked. And if I had my choice between ding dang diddly and damnit, I think you know which one I choose.

I’ll get over it soon. I always do!

Love,

  2. Aw, that's too bad. You've got a ton of readers...maybe some of them have an idea or a rental? Good luck, I hope you get the vaca you will all love.

  3. I am so sorry to hear that...but can totally relate! We have 2 85 lb dogs!!! It's tough to go in vacation because we like to bring them with us. Honestly, if it were me I would play dumb and break the rules (or find a good friend that would watch our babies while we were gone). I hope you can find a solution that makes everyone happy!

  4. So sorry to hear that...if only you were closer to me...St George Island and Cape San Blas in the Florida panhandle are where I go (it's the undeveloped part of the panhandle). A friend mentioned Petvr.com, have you tried that site?

  6. We've been enamored with the Maine coast since a few years ago when we realized he couldn't handle the heat like he used to. Something in his internal temperature gauge hot haywired after the first brain surgery. I have 2 months in the summer that I can choose a vacation week, so I'm confined to that. He loves MDI and Acadia National Park, so that's the area where we're looking. It will work out. Thanks, all. And Molly, thanks for the pet site!

  11. Oh, I am so sorry about your plans. I know leaving George would make your vacation less enjoyable. I hope it works out for you....sending good thoughts and prayers your way.

  13. I would call/write/email the people who posted the sign, send them a picture of George.....how can they refuse that face??????
I will never understand "no dogs".......

  14. Oh, that's a shame! Are there any sites that actually cater to pet owners? You night be able to narrow your search that way... Hope you find something.

  15. Awww, what a letdown for you. Maybe you could fluff George up, give him an attitude and he could pass for a cat? No? Hmmm, let me think on this for a while.

  18. Keep looking for a pet friendly spot in Maine. I know that is where you want to go. And blue seems to be very contaigous these days...

  19. How could they deny a celebrity like George?! Not to mention his famous blogging Mom?!

  20. I thought George was a just an unfortunately hairy child - like some recessive gene coming out in one of you. I never realized he was a dog!

If you Google dog-friendly vacation rentals in Maine or something similar, you may find something.

  21. When you go on holiday you want it to be perfect. That's definitely not too much to ask. What a total shame, I'm not surprised you're feeling out of sorts today.

  22. BUU-MMMER. I know you're a sad shade of blue right now, but what are the chances of getting this worked out? You have the luck 'o the Irish on your side. Not to mention Persistence with a capital P. You might even have good news already? Hang in there, sister.

  23. Oh sheet ... cant you explain George is a person not a dog .. or even maybe try the 'he's a service dog' and hope they dont ask for proof...

  25. It might be worth contacting them in hopes that the signs go into further detail such as "Unleashed in a particular area" or "unless accompanied" or "unless it's George whom EVERYONE loves" or something. They might be able to tell you that it's ok if you're already booked and didn't know it. Failing that, take a detour and leave George with me.. Benny would love him!

  26. That's the kind of stuff that happens to me! Hope it all works out so George can go!

  27. Well DRAT! I'm from Iowa but have been to Acadia NP and LOVED it. Someday I'll get there again! Good luck on your adventures even if it is sans George.

You can always drive a million miles and stay in my Schoolhouse; it's pet-friendly and has lots of room to walk the pup ;-) (www.countryschoolretreat.110mb.com)

  29. That sounded like my perfect vacation, too...right up to the part where they won't allow dogs.

    Fudge!...

If it's any consoldation, we haven't found anywhere in Korea that we can let Maggie Moo off the leash to run & scamper like the country dog she is.

But if you find a place, let me know. I'll have to book it when we get back from life overseas.

    Much love & best wishes,
    Jennifer
