All things bright and beautiful

Sunday was my last day of a long holiday vacation. I slept late (for me), waking at 8:30 after a wonderful dream that I couldn’t remember. I was determined not to think about Monday, not once. This was going to be a good day and I was planning on beginning it with a delicious breakfast.

My husband had just left to continue his morning walk with George, and told me he’d just finished his breakfast. So I decided to make an omelet. For one.

I got out one of my new cutting boards and a knife, both gifts from my son.

When my son bought these, he was standing in line with Brooke Shields. I kid you not. He was shopping at Sur La Table in NYC shortly before Christmas and she was behind him. So Brooke Shields saw my Christmas presents before I did.

I love the scent of onions and mushrooms while they’re cooking. And call me crazy, but I like a little bit of nutmeg sprinkled on my mushrooms. It adds some pizzazz.

This is a colorful post, so here’s some yellow to brighten your day. I whipped up 2 egg whites and one yolk.

And because the next day and the months to come would be free of fat and holiday goodies, I decided to splurge on the cheese for my omelet. This is gruyere. And my life is now complete.

The last of the Thomas’ Cranberry English Muffins, and a glass of milk completes the meal.

Getting back to school was actually great. Although I enjoy the time off, I like the steady routine of my job. And I only wish my husband had something that made him this glad. I don’t mean to put a damper on anything, but sometimes I feel a little bad about being glad.

But enough of this.

Kudos to anyone who knows the author of the book that matches this post’s title.

Until tomorrow, my friends . . .

PS ~ For those who asked the question of how I got the navigation bars at the top of the blog (under the header), the tutorial I used is here: {link}. I’m sure there are others out there, but this worked for me. Make sure you have the links ready to go, e.g. ‘About Me’, ‘Recipes’, etc. by creating a post, hitting publish and then burying it somewhere in your blog. By that I mean to change the date.

  3. Oh, Now I'm hungry...and I don't even eat eggs...but you make them look appetizing!
I woke up this morning with the same thoughts...and then I thought again...about how thankful I am that I have a job.

I'm sure that you being happy makes your hubby very happy! So don't feel bad about being happy :)

  4. Can't remember his name but didn't he write a few books about a country vet in England? I loved those boos!

  5. I love omelets! Especially with mushrooms, green onions, and red bell pepper...my favorite combination. Glad you pampered yourself and happy that you are glad to be back at work.

I also love all of James Herriott's books! They remind me of growing up on a farm.

  6. James Herriott...but it is also a famous Anglican hymn. Ask me how I know this! Cannot wait to see you! By the way, Dora has her own FaceBook page--won't you please join so she can friend you!?

  7. That looks so yummy, makes me want to make this for dinner! Nothing as good a breakfast food, any time! So, are you a teacher? I'm just learning about you..love it! Come say hi :D

  8. Ah yes, James Herriot. Very good. And to Julie, I run the office of a K-12 private school.

Mental P, I don't want to join Facebook! It would be another thing I would have to do. But wait, maybe George does.

    I'll ask him, k?

  9. Oh join Facebook! I say that to everyone. I am not letting Riley know that Dora has a page though - hijacking my blog is bad enough! Mushroom cheese omelets are a fave of mine - since I am housebound, I guess I'll have one for breakfast!

  10. Did you ever see the All Creature Great and Small series on PBS? It's wonderful. Mmmmm, I could go for a bite of that cranberry muffin...

  11. Never feel badly for feeling 'glad'. We all own our own feelings. If your husband is not 'glad' then working towards feeling that way should be 'his project'. Everyone needs a project, right??

Now pass the eggs and gimme that last muffin, will ya please!

    P.S. Facebook is time consuming.

  13. Kate, I am not usually one for being a OneUpsWoman, but in this case, I simply must. I have been a total fool for the All Creatures Great & Small books, BBC series, stories, etc for over 20 years! James Herriot is actually the pen name for Alf Wight! His partner Farnon was Sinclair. I even met him in Thirsk aka Darrowby in 1989! He was a dear, dear person. I was just watching some of the episodes on Netflix Play it Now today!! As Mental P. pointed out, it is a hymn in the Anglican/Episcopal hymnal. Our priest has a blessing of the animals service once a year, and we always sing it. We also recite it here at the cottage whenever we lose a pet.
I kept all my calendars, and I will be using the 1982 James Herriot's Yorkshire for 2010!

    Your breakfast looks delicious!

  14. Firelight, Thank you so much for all the information! I had no idea. My husband and I really enjoyed the BBC series and we should really buy it. I have four of his books and have posted about this before, specifically in regards to going crackerdog!

  16. I love omelets too, however, several years ago I develop an allergy to the egg yolk, so now I just make my omelets or scrambled eggs with the egg whites.

Just add one drop of yellow food coloring to the egg whites and it cooks up looking like the whole egg....and it's very tasty too.

Those Thomas cranberry english muffins sure sound good. We can't get them here in the Midwest.

  17. James Herriot--my very favorite! Join Facebook!!! We can be friends!

  20. I'm another of James Herriot's fans and have all his books...I still miss those tv shows too...classics...

... that mushroom and gruyere omelet is classic too:)

  21. Famous chopping boards - whatever next? I wasn't hungry until I saw the omelette - now I'm starving. Must go and get some breakfast...

(Thanks for the link link - looks good).

  22. I LOVE omlettes!! I guess that would be pretty healthy the way you used only one egg yolk- smart girl!! What a smancy life your family lives shopping at the same stores as Brooke Shields...what was she buying?? ;-))
I'll bet walks with George are something that make your husband happy- he probably just doesn't talk about it as much as you talk about your happy things..that is a guy for you!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. James Herriot, of course! But now I will be singing the hymn all day--not such a bad thing! C

  24. George might like Facebook. My little dog Kansas is there. She
    has become quite famous actually.

  25. Loved those James Herriot books; they frequently made me cry.
Your omelet looks great. My boyfriend is the kind of omelets; he had one for dinner last night!

  26. Wow, I haven't seen those James Herriot PBS episodes in years. We used to love watching them!

  27. Some people fear becoming their own mother. I think I am becoming Mrs. Pumphrey...and the spaniels immulate Trickie-Woo and go "crackerdog" & "flop-bottom" all the time! They do not, however have any "pen friends" that I know of. Let me know if George gets any mysterious letters from Alabama asking him to smuggle in dog treats!! Oh my, heaven help us! Or at least "Uncle Herriot" !
    Isn't she a marvelous character?

  28. bROOKe sHIEldS! how cool is THAT? your omelet and blueberry cranberry muffin look delicious! does the plastic knife keep the veggies from turning brown or rusty?

  29. That omelet looks delicious! I love the All Creatures series too. Facebook.. not so much. :)

  30. I live in the middle of Herriott country, Kate, and I can assure you that his "All Creatures Great and Small" was taken from the second line of the hymn:-
    All things bright and beautiful,
    All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful -
The Lord God made them all.
As to who wrote it - I shall have to look it up when I have finished drooling over that omelette!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Hmmm...I must make a better effort to cook a real breakfast in the morning after reading this post. It's just instant oatmeal for me most days. This looks great!

Enjoy getting back into the job!

  32. What a great way to start the day. Love your beater mixer.

  33. A feast for the eyes and the mouth made with kitchen utensils with celebrity status and eaten by someone who has personally spoken to Robert Duvall.

    I want your autograph!

p.s. Looks like a fabulous breakfast.

word ver: praftess. Kate is a great omelette maker. I'm awful but they say praftess makes perfect.

  34. i loved all of the herriott books - beautiful writings.

beautiful shots - i can remember when i was out of work how hard it was to read or hear about someone having a great day at work - so i totally get what you're saying. and i understand the guilt. but, i know he wouldn't want you to feel that guilty. enjoy.

i was happy to be back at work too.

  35. You lost me at mushrooms...I only love them raw because once they are cooked, the texture is so nasty to me!

    Otherwise, looks amazing!!!

  36. I have that knife in purple .. got it on www.delight.com

James Herriot wrote the book but Cecil Alexander wrote the words to the music of All Things Bright and Beautiful .... just sayin'

  38. Hi Kate, Daryl beat me to the author of one of my favourite hymns - Cecil Alexander. I too loved that TV series - why can't they make them that good anymore?. I'm impressed with the new header.
Your breakfast looks like something that would do a cozy country B+B proud. I've got the same knife and it really does prevent things from sticking to the blade.

  39. I really should dig out some of James Herriotts books and 'encourage' my animal lover daughter to read them, wonder if she will think they are a bit daggy! though!!! and of course if I suggest them you can be sure she won't even look at them!!!
    Yummy looking breakfast!

  41. A feast for the eyes as well as the stomach! I'm so hungry after seeing these photos! I do understand your dilemma...continue to be glad and in that way you'll always be in the right state of mind for your husband when he needs you.

  42. I so love a good omelet. I was just reading a past post of yours way back last year in July, I think. When your husband had been terminated from his job and you were sending out prayers for another one to be found that would be all of what your husband really wanted. It is so wonderful how things worked out.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I love that cutting board and knife! And I love that hymn. Did your son compare items with Brooke Sheilds?

    ReplyDelete
  44. First, YUMMY! 2nd...no kidding Brooke Shields...and 3rd oooohhh...James Herriot...read it, own it!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Because of you, I have been on a quest to find the cranberry English muffins, but to no avail. Sigh. I guess I'll just have to enjoy them through your blog.

  46. I'll bet that was scrumptious.
