Spring Cleaning on a fine weekend

It’s spring cleaning time but I took it in stages, doing the lower half the house on Saturday and the upstairs half on Sunday. Sometimes the mess just gets to me and I don’t feel right until it’s clean and polished and gleaming.

Like that bookcase there. Every picture was dusted off and then placed back on the newly oiled wood.

I like when the wood gleams.

And when the finishing touches are dust free.

Something I rarely show: the back staircase. I love the runner used on these stairs.

I just liked the colors here.

I even cleaned the glass globes of the light fixtures in the entry foyer. I get into these cleaning frenzies and it’s best to just get out of my way. Sometimes I even get angry. A psychologist would have a field day with me, I’m sure.

Some day I’m going to paint this door. But not today.

No nails were used on this flooring. It’s all pegged, circa 1810.

A couple of photos from the bookshelf. My husband on the left, on his 30th birthday. When I look at him today, this is whom I see. And our youngest son, my baby, when he was very young. He’s 23 now.

I hope your week is off to a good start. For me, it’s always better when things are neat and clean. If my house is in order, it makes me feel like my life is in order. You know?

Until tomorrow, my friends . . .

  3. Dear Kate,
Well, now you have gone and done it. I like coming to this lovely blog to see beautiful photos and read about your wonderful life. You DO know you have a wonderful life, don't you?
Well, now you have gone and done it. You have made me feel guilty about not doing my spring cleaning. I have procrastinated for as I long as I possibly can. My excuses are good ones, mind you, but they are excuses none the less. My friend always says, if there is something to do in the garden, then the house will just have to wait. I have always tried to follow that philosophy but now I am full of guilt and will begin my spring cleaning tomorrow. I shall find a way to lock myself in the house in order to keep my word. Have a wonderful week.

  22. I love to have a clean & tidy house. It makes my head" feel right"!! But at the moment we are in the midst of major renovations & I feel like everywhere I turn there is mess, dust & noisey builders. Don't get me wrong, the job they are doing is fantastic & it won't be for too much longer ( I hope!) & the outcome will be wonderful; but I can't wait to clean up the mess & get my home back! Beautiful pics too Kate!

  23. are we twins.... i do that too and I LOVE LOVE LOVE the pics at the end...

  24. Hmmm. Dusting. That's something one is able to do after the clutter is gone, right? I'm drowning in clutter, and we won't talk about the dust. Your house looks beautiful. Mind could never look like that.

    I need a drink.

wv: obspa. Although I'm stressed thinking about all the decluttering and cleaning I need to do, I obspa not have a drink. It's too early. But still.

  25. Mine, not mind.

  35. You have such a beautiful home.. with all the touches which make it so. I love that door knob photo. The colours are incredible. For a moment, I had a perspective issue with the stair runner. I saw it as three small rugs hanging from wooden dowels. Yes, I'm odd. :)

  36. House in order- life in order. I totally get that!!!! Your home is beautiful!

  37. Your house looks like a gorgeous typical country house... and I mean typical in a good way, the real cozy kind. :) I love your blue back stairs and the runner.

I must admit I haven't dug into spring cleaning just yet, but today WAS clean the bathroom day. I do love a bathroom that smells all clean and bleachy.
