A little break

We interrupt the regularly scheduled vacation photos from Maine to bring you something yummy. The tomatoes in our garden are coming on strong and I felt the urge to highlight them here. Every couple of days, I take a big basket of them to school to share with my co-workers.

They seem to love them.

My husband cooked on the grill tonight and I hung out in the kiddie pool for an hour after work. I will tell you that the scent coming from that grill was getting me all worked up. My husband served roasted chicken, and potatoes and vegetables in a zesty sauce. My contribution was a caprese salad.  Someday I’m going to do a balsamic reduction to pour over it.

But not today.

It was divine. In fact, the entire meal was delicious.

I just felt compelled to tell you that.

It’s probably due to the fact that for the past several nights we’ve had tomato sandwiches for dinner. Don’t get me wrong – I love tomato sandwiches and consider them one of the best things about summer.

But dinner on the grill . . . swoon.

I’m still processing photos of Maine, and couldn’t let a day go by without posting at least one.

They’re absolutely unique. Some day I’m going to take a carriage ride from the stable there. I say it every year but never have anyone to go with. Maybe next year.

    You may be swooning over the grill food but being a vegetarian, I'm swooning over your caprese salad! And I love balsamic which would just be de-lish on those scrumptious tomatoes!!!

    I'm a vegetarian, too, and love caprese salad. Yum! And your lovely postcard from Acadia National Park is glorious. I've seen so many pretty pics from there; I'd love to go someday. And, yes, Africa, it's so unreal, so sad

    I'm coming right over for some of that Caprese salad. The tomatoes here in Maine are still green, but I can smell and taste that dish all the way from here. Just simmer down some good balsamic til it is a little syrupy. IF it's possible to improve on what you already have there....

    Oh my goodness I too served Andrew's tomatoes with cheese and basil drizzled with olive oil, but your caprese salad just blows me away! And I'm thinking you should do marketing for Acadia because your postcard is just the most delightful image I've seen of there in a long time! xo ~Lili

    What a guy, huh!A COOK--what more could we want?! I ask you!;)

    I hope you enjoyed the Caprese salad--that would have been the tops in my book--grilled chicken and veggies are wonderful-but oh! that Caprese SALAD--OH MY.

    And lolling around in the pool while your "poor" husband LABORS over the torridly, hot grill. What an awesome woman you are, Kate! I truly wanna be like you when I finally grow up.:) I'll go on the carriage ride with you.

    Just looking at those yummy tomatoes makes one realise how lucky we are to be able to choose exactly what we wish to eat for every meal - unlike those in the Horn of Africa who are dependent upon whatever meagre supply is available.

    You need to come here and bring some of those tomatoes and I'll get some mozzarella cheese and fresh basil and we'll pig out .. a nice Malbec to wash it down .. yummmmmm

    We'll not be seeing any tomatoes here for a while yet - our cold wet spring, followed a blistering hot drought has confused the crap out of our garden, though we do finally have some green tomatoes. But I'm real glad to take a look at yours - yummy and beautiful!

    News update....

    Admission: I have never had 'caprese salad'...probably the last person on earth that has not!
    Today I met friends at an Italian pizzaria. And I ordered a caprese salad which was listed as an appetizer. My overall comment is that I was disappointed. The tomatoes were that cardboard variety that comes from Mexico, the mozzarella was not very tasty, and there was not basil or balsamic reduction! All I could think about...dream about...was the photo of your caprese salad you posted this day! It has been so hot down here in southeast Texas that the tomatoes did not produce good ones this year! So I will continue to dream and hopefully enjoy a really good caprese salad one of these days!

    I'm so jealous of your tomatoes. It has been such a drought here that fresh tomatoes are limited. Maybe fall when we get a bit more rain. Love, love, love the pictures of Maine and makes me so excited for our trip in October.

    Oh good heavens, my mouth is watering! My husband is about to go grill some chicken and some zucchini from the farm around the corner... And I have to make a cucumber salad and some corn on the cob... :)
