Something stolen, something gained

It’s been nearly a week since I’ve posted and I’m sorry but I just haven’t felt like it. I’ve missed you though and I’m stopping in tonight to say hello.

Hello ~

It’s after 9 and I’m watching Modern Family which never fails to make me laugh. I’ve had a bit of a rough week and have been running around, getting things done and dealing with issues that come up in the regular course of life. Plus, the past several nights, I’ve been working on the picture boards that people will see at my husband’s brother’s funeral which will be held on Saturday. I hope I’ve done a decent job and that my sister-in-law likes them.

On a lighter note, I’ll tell you a tale of my new favorite beverage glasses. It’s really not all that exciting, but I’m telling it anyway.

On Christmas day, after dinner, it’s been my husband’s family tradition to play the Dirty Santa Game. This is a gift game that requires you to bring a wrapped gift that cost a set dollar amount (ours is $25). Each player draws a number from a hat, and the game begins. Number one goes first and opens a gift. Then number two has the option of choosing another gift or stealing the gift opened by number one. If number one has a gift stolen, they get to choose another. This goes on (with a few other rules) until all the gifts are opened. There is usually always someone who gets the gift they really wanted, and there’s often someone who’s left wondering why they play this damn game every year.

But we play because it’s fun! That’s why.

This year, on my turn, I opened the glass set that you see above. And as soon as I saw it, I begged my relatives not to steal this set of glasses because I really really liked them. They came from Fishs Eddy in NYC and were actually brought by my son, Matt. All through the game, my relatives abided by my wish and it wasn’t until the person with the final number stepped up to take his turn.

It was my brother-in-law, Bob, and he liked the glasses too. And he ignored my pleas and stole them away from me. I did end up taking home a very nice set of bath towels.

But I couldn’t get those pretty bird glasses off my mind.

Plus, it didn’t help that I was texting with my son later that night. He was staying at his Uncle Bob & Aunt Helen’s house and wrote me that his uncle had already taken the glasses out of the box, and washed them and was actually using them. In fact, my son was drinking from one at that very moment.

Gah! My glasses!

So, if Bob & Helen now had my glasses, are you wondering why they’re in my cabinet? Well, it’s because my son reminded me that he’d gotten them at Fishs Eddy in the city. And wasn’t I going to the city the very next day? And . . . according to their website . . . they were on sale.

So when I got to the city, and while we were waiting for our friend Janice to arrive on the train, Daryl and I took the subway down to the shop and spent some time browsing the cool stuff they have there. I loved it! And I believe they have a lot on sale right now, too. Even these cute little numbers . . .

I think I’ll go pour something cold to drink in one of my new Oldham + Harper painted bird glasses. Until next time, my friends ~

  1. You are too much fun! Alas, it wouldn't be dirty Santa without someone losing the gift they really love and someone else gloating over them.
Your stories always make me smile :-) have a good rest of your week!

  3. We played a similar game at my job's Christmas party! It was the first time I'd ever done anything like that. I got a Hallmark crystal mistletoe hanging ornament thingy - which I was very tempted to trade off to someone else but for some reason I kept it. I never hung it on the tree (too heavy) and didn't know what to do with it all during Christmas, so it just laid under the tree. I guess I'll just put it away with the other ornaments and worry about it again next year! :)

  11. I love that game! Your story made me laugh - especially when you found out that he was drinking(!) from your glasses. The nerve.

It's been a brutal week over here too and I've retreated to my quiet place, as well. It's natural and healthy to honour ourselves in this way when necessary.

Be gentle with yourself. We're all friends here and want only the best for you and your family.

    Much love,

  12. We do Dirty Santa, too. It's weird, but fun. The glasses are perfectly made for you ... I especially love the Nuthatch.

I did a photo display for my father-in-law's funeral three years ago. It was a really weird experience ... going through photos for the collection, smiling at some, and remembering all the while why I was doing it. For me, I had more time, because I was doing it before he passed. My heart goes out to you right now. Sending hugs.

  20. Loved that you were able to buy your glasses. I would not have stolen them from you. boom. We play that game too and two years ago, I bought a wonderful Starbucks mug. I tried to get it back. Didn't happen. How lame is that? This year, the person that took it, gave it to me for a present.

  25. Reading back these comments . . . I just want to state that I love the fact that Bob & Helen have the mugs. Truly am not at all chagrined that they got 'stolen'. And that's a fact.

  26. I'm sure the photo boards are wonderful and will be greatly appreciated by everyone who attends. And I LOVE those glasses, and truth be told, I probably would have stolen them too! ;-) Though I would have felt bad about doing it...darn that guilt thing! I'm glad you got your own set, I love Fishs Eddy stuff!

That "Dirty Santa" is fun, though I often wind up with a "White Elephant.":-)

  30. I have been away from blogland and am getting caught up. I also love the dog picture from your NYC trip. I love your bird glasses. But I hate that your family has lost one of its own, and I hate the pain and emptiness that is part of such loss. Know that I am thinking of you, your husband and his family, and all those touched by this loss. I will light a candle and summon love on your behalf. And I'll pray. Courage and strength and tenderness to you and yours.

  31. Those glasses are soooo you, too cool. Glad you got some. We play that game with my cousins at Christmas but hardly anyone ever steals anything. Maybe because they're too afraid to be impolite or maybe all the gifts are crappy but it does make the game not that much fun.

I, too, am sorry about your brother-in-law.

  32. Oh, I love them! So glad you were able to get a set, they are just perfect for you.

We play Dirty Santa every Christmas Eve at the nephews house and have for several years now but we do ornaments.

Love those glasses too. Glad you got them.

  35. Those glasses are Sooo YOU! Glad you got a set...

We do the same thing at Christmas, but in my family say you really like what you picked and surely it will be stolen, LOL.

  38. We did a five dollar exchange this year. I got ghiradella (sp?) chocolates. yum. My daughter-in-law suggested the game. we all had fun. lots of stealing of gifts. When someone lost their precious gift and grumbled, daughter-in-law would say, it was only $5 you can go buy one!!

  41. Those glasses were inspired by one of my very favorite artists, Charley Harper. His bird paintings are absolutely beautiful. I think you'd love his work, Miss Kate. I have at least 5 of his silk screens. Start here: https://charleyharperartstudio.com/

On another note, I'm sure your boards will be much loved and appreciated. My heart goes out to you, Andrew and the whole family.
