Downed trees, a happy dog, and dinner conversation

It was another late arrival home today, so I ended up taking my walk after dinner rather than prior to it, grabbing the camera with the 18-55mm lens on my way out the door.

I wanted to get a couple of photos of the downed trees from the storm we had over the weekend. It was NOTHING like the bad weather that my friends in CT experienced. We didn’t lose power here.

Below is the old cherry tree that split the lilac in half last year. Can you tell my heart is still broken over that lilac bush? Well, it is. My husband has been cleaning up the tree bit by bit but has been sidetracked by the poison ivy. He’s got it up his arm; nothing too bad we think.

George had chased a squirrel up the barn roof and is heading back in my direction.

As I walked with the camera, I wondered what I was going to post tonight, thinking why people would want to see more pictures of my dog and my property. Well, not my property per se, but the property on which we live. And then I snapped a couple more photos and kept walking. I try not to let the little stuff bother me.

A conversation at the dinner table tonight went like this:

ME: Oh, I meant to tell you that several people wrote on my post yesterday saying that they loved your snowdrop pictures.

HIM: What snowdrops?

ME: You know, those little white flowers with the green edges. I used three of them and put textures on them. A couple of readers said that you and I compliment each other well.

HIM: That’s funny.

ME: Why is it funny? You take the pictures and I process them. We compliment each other. We’re like two peas in a pod.

HIM: That’s not right. There are never just two peas in a pod.

ME: You know what I mean. The peas are the same.

HIM: That’s a bad pod then if there’s only two peas in it. Where are all the other peas?

ME: Well, they probably all left because you pissed them off.

HIM: I knew you were gonna say that.

Back to the walk . . . at the edge of the property lies the old dead pine tree.. It’s lying across our Appalachian Trail. When I clicked on that link, I couldn’t believe how rich and green everything was back in September . . .

Down by the driveway, George hears the neighbors. There’s a house on the right just behind the tree line where he’s looking. They’re pretty quiet, though. I moved a little and got down on my knee, telling George to ‘stay’.

So he laid down to pose for me.

I love this dog.

It’s always a pleasure having you stop by my little part of the world. Thanks for that.

Until tomorrow, my friends . . .

  1. What is it with men and their literal translations and an inability to color outside the lines?

(Sorry, don't trip over my baggage as you make your way through this comment.)

Just remove the "two" and say "We're peas in a pod." He'll be happy then. Maybe.

  3. I love, love, love that conversation. Men are so funny.

And I think the same thing every single time I grab the camera and head out. But I always find something interesting or something new.

    Have a wonderful evening.

  5. Your conversation made me laugh. Maybe it will remind me to laugh more at things my DH says. Of course, that might tick him off.... Hee!

  6. I love that you love your dog.

Your husband is funny. Instead of taking a compliment he picks at your choice of words. Oy is right. His snowdrops are nice whether he likes it or not!

  13. Ohmigoodness. Yet another Maria!

That conversation was fun ny. :-) And I have no problems seeing ten pictures of George per day. I'm kind of guilty of doing the same thing and the dog I take pictures of is not even mine. :-/

Sad about the cherry tree. I lost mine in the big Kansas City flood of 92. It just kept raining and raining and raining and since the poor tree was full of cherries at the time, it couldn't take the weight. That was one fabulous pie cherry tree. Errrgh. Weather.

  14. I laughed out loud at this post. Just like a man!!

I had two border collies growing up, Lad and Lady. Lad herded my little brother around our yard. Your George reminds me of Lady...she was one of the smartest dogs I've ever known.

What a beautiful home you have as well...I enjoy visiting your part of the world. :)

  16. Hilarious - and I love your 'stream of consciousness' approach to this post. Men. I adore mine, but don't ever expect any of them to fill in for a girlfriend!

  17. Hahahaha, loved the dinner conversation- slight bit of sarcasim from your side Missy? hehehehe...There isn't much depth in men, they are what they are- I've been reminded of this on two seperate occasions recently. They are very much like dogs, short term memory, living in the moment and once the moment is over they've moved on...we women are so complex- it's amazing we're attracted to men (well, most of us...) hahahaha....
Ok, enough rambling in your comment box- have a super day!

  18. Bad luck about the tree!

We have another cyclone approaching the coast, which means yet more rain for us here! Just hope the rain sodden ground doesn't tip one of my many huge gum trees over in a gale force wind. So far in the years here I have been lucky!

Lovely to have someone to chat to over dinner!! Very cute. And of course George is the best also!

  19. i knew he would say that... and YES i laughed out loud... alot... LOVE george... and love you and his pictures too LOL.

  20. ...GAH! Men - Go figure! :oP

...Btw, I received my "prize" and honey I emphasize the word "prize" in this sentence 'cause yesterday my cardinal picture arrived and it. is. beautiful! I absolutely adore it Kate! So very special because of what it stands for and for who it came from...you my dear, are a blessing... ;o) Thank you Kate.

...And tell your hubby that all the other peas didn't make the cut because they weren't special enough for the pod, hence, two very special peas in one very special pod. *giggle* :o)

...I love George! If I told Salty to sit she'd look at me like "wtf?" lol...

...Enjoy your day and again, thank you for the love picture!

    ...Blessings... :o)

  21. ...*sigh* that's supposed to read "lovely" picture... Geez, I can't type in the dark. :o/

  22. That's one of the things I miss, the conversation, sometimes just sitting in the same room, I guess you would call it having a silent conversation.

  23. tis true...men can be so annoying.
My husband loves to tell me how 'awful' I am to drag him around the country side looking for looms and fabric, but he ALWAYS wants to go.
    Hmm.
I think that everyone has a different life, and even though you think it might be boring, other people love taking a look, and feeling the vibes. I feel the same lots of times, and what I think it par for the course, other people are intrigued by.
    men and blogs: mysteries.

  24. Oh those silly pea pods .. I truly laughed out loud, then I coughed.

VW: amalit. I dont know, am I lit?

  26. JBM and I love reading about George. If he ever disappears into the night, you know where to find him :)

  27. Dear Kate,
Leave it to our men!!! They just can't go with the flow of the conversation. I loved the photos of the snowdrops regardless of the other half. George seems very happy with the change in weather and daylight savings time. It's nice to be able to take a walk after dinner. I actually worked outside last night till 8PM. It was heavenly. Thanks for sharing. Hugs and Kisses

  28. How am I supposed to enjoy those pictures of George while I'm laughing so stinking hard? And I think our husbands are related.

  29. I got a good laugh about your dinner conversation...too funny.
    Why are all men alike?

    ReplyDelete
  30. You could post pictures of George and the property where you live everyday and I would visit just to see them:D

    ReplyDelete
  31. LOL. My husband would have said the same! I call him a "semantic nut" because, even though he knows perfectly well what I mean, he has to pick at the exact meanings and my word choice. Actually by now, after several years of marriage, it's one of the things we laugh about rather than let it irritate us. Sounds like you two do the same.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Men are so literal! And so irritational! I'll never get tired of George - ever!

wv: bedgito Bedgito - what I will be doing tonight around 11pm. (I am not nearly as good as CBW.)

  33. :) LOL!!! I love the conversation between you and your husband. Sounds like many a conversation I have with my boyfriend.

Seeing things so *as they are* doesn't work when talking in cliche. Men... :)

  34. I love where you live and I think George is such a great friend to have! Can't wait to see your place this summer when all is green again!

  35. How is the lilac bush doing? Will/can it recover? I love taking walks with you & George. Living in the mass of houses, cars, noise, asphalt & concrete otherwise known as suburbia...the nature, solitude & space is truly healing to the soul.

  36. Should I post on her blog? It's not like she doesn't get enough comments. Good gravy! How far do I have to scroll down? Does she even have time to read them all? Now that Ree is promoting her, I will a nameless faceless commentor in the sea of hundreds. (Thousands once you are as popular as Ree!) I stopped commenting over there. Who can keep up with that?

So... what was this post about? :)

  37. Wow, that sounds like some of our dinner table conversations. Too funny!

  38. Taking up for all men everywhere, we know exactly what you are talking about. We just like hearing your voice, so we say silly things so that you will keep talking! :)

  41. I have to agree men are very literal...I guess it is true...Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus...I guess that's what makes it fun...Love the last photo...he's such a pretty fellow..

  42. JackDaddy, that was a very NICE thing to say.

  46. Oh Kate, I really admire your ability to make a wonderful post out of nothing... I really mean that in the most complimentary way. ;)

    Sorta like Seinfeld...

  47. As if George doesn't already make every post a winner, that conversation with your other pea was hilarious. :)
