Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens

Ok, before I even start, let me tell you that I’m lying about the kittens. Sorry folks, but if you really want to see kittens, go here.

Here in my world today, you’ll only find a series of raindrop photos. It’s something I decided to do after reading this post by blogging friend, Tracey, at These Nine Acres. Tracey posted a series of photographs with the theme of ‘resting places’. Although I’m not feeling quite 100% yet, I did manage to venture outside today with the macro lens and my Joby gorillapod (it’s a little bendable tripod) determined to get at least five photos for my series of raindrops. Because raining is all it’s been doing these past four days.

I bundled up even though it’s really not even chilly but I’ve had this darn cold. I also grabbed my small camera bag to carry an extra lens (just in case) and of course, a tarp in case I need to get on the ground.

So there I was, walking around the edge of the property, bundled up in my waterproof winter coat, my crazy hair flying, camera on one shoulder, camera bag on the other and in my arms, a plastic tarp. This is quite fashionable attire in my neck of the woods, just so’s you know.

The raindrops were difficult to find, however. The wind had begun to blow. But I was determined. The shot above is SOOC (straight out of camera).

This is a branch of the dogwood tree next to the house. I can see the reflection of the other branches inside this little droplet.

Another SOOC. These colors had me mesmerized.

The tarp came in handy. It’s not good to lie on the wet, muddy ground without some protection. I found this little droplet hanging of the Autumn Joy Sedum along the side of the house. I was thrilled to have found them coming up.

As I walked, I thought about how long I have been taking pictures and mentally thanked my husband again for buying me this cool camera (my Nikon D80) in the first place on my birthday just over two years ago. I also wondered if anyone could see me because I must look like a wild woman in my pale blue North Face jacket, my curly hair flying in the wind, chasing after the tarp that the wind had just plucked from my hand.

And then I realized I didn’t care if anyone could see me. I yam what I yam.

I am calling this one Puff the Magic Dragon (with a honeysuckle necklace).

I’m glad you came by today. If you want to do a series of 10 or more photos like my friend Tracey above, link it here on her blog. She began the series “to encourage other photographers to choose a theme and develop an essay of images related to that theme”.

Until tomorrow, my friends . . .

  1. Hi Kate:
I love your writing as much as your photography. Not only can I see your day through a lens, but I can "see" you taking those photographs through your words. Quite an accomplishment, when you consider that both are done so well.

My husband was a professional photographer for many years - commercial/industrial/marine...where you constantly find interest in the close-ups. I have to tell you, I'm starting to covet your camera! (He's promised to purchase a new one for me.)

Have a great week, my friend. Hope you'll visit Brynwood tomorrow. I'm celebrating my first blog birthday with a big giveaway.

    xoxo

  18. I love all of these....my favorites are the one with the other branches reflected, the other SOOC with the greenery behind it, and your "puff the magic dragon"...though I thought it looked more like "the hand of God", myself! Thank you for your comment on my Textured picture...I'm SURE textures are addicting...I have a very addictive personality to begin with, so I must be very careful, lol!

  20. Great photos. I'll check out Tracy's link. I like themes and challenges because they help me focus on something I wouldn't think of, or see something I wouldn't see. My days are so much alike (the work varies, but I sit at my computer an awful lot!), so this is one way I keep from getting stale!

  21. Wow, these are incredible, and kudos to you for going to extreme measures to get them. Okay maybe not as extreme as Greg du Toit but still...
And you should see me when I go out to get my mail, (usually in crazy pajamas) sometimes I hide in the bushes if a car is going by!

  29. Hi Kate, those are beautiful photos of the rain droplets. Great idea to have a theme. I just left 8 inches of snow 4 hours North of me. The visit left us HOUSEBOUND with the grandchildren, which was fun except they have cabin fever! So I watched as they made snow men....I didn't take any warm clothes with me...I relied on the weather man who said, "partly cloudy, temps in the 50's" HUH????? NOT even close! should have known better.
