I love watermelon. And my sister.

I have three sisters and I love them all. But one sister lives only 2 hours away and she’s the one I get to see most often. My sister, Charlotte, is here visiting for a night. She and my husband are watching the Phillies game this evening on the big flat screen tv while I work out in the exercise room.

If you know anything about me at all, you know that I’d never work out in the exercise room. Besides, we don’t even have an exercise room.

I’m actually sitting on the couch next to my sister, and we are having dueling laptops – she’s checking her mail and texting her husband back and forth – and I’m writing this post. She was all out of joint about some player being placed on a DL and thought it insanely funny that I thought someone was placed on the Down Low.

I’m so not a sports fan.

While I have your attention, I’d like to share with you my favorite way to eat watermelon. I know that the combination sounds really odd, but believe me when I tell you, I’d never do you no wrong.

Try this if you’re feeling adventurous. And then write me and let me know how much you loved it.

Watermelon, Feta and Olive Salad

2 cups watermelon, cut into small chunks
1 1/2 oz. feta cheese, crumbled (about 1/3 cup)
2 Tbsp. chopped, pitted kalamata olives
2 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
1 Tbsp. chopped fresh herbs,
such as basil or oregano (optional)
Coarse sea salt or kosher salt
Freshly ground black pepper
Toss the watermelon, cheese, olives, oil, and if desired, herbs together in a bowl. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve.

I used fresh oregano and basil from the garden. Yum.

: : : ~ : : :

I love having my sister here ~ hope your weekend is something to write home about.

Here’s what we listened to while driving to town to pick up the sushi we’d ordered. You can’t listen to this and not sing along.

Charlotte Fun.

  6. Enjoy your evening with Charlotte. That was my Grandmother's name and the name I had planned to name my daughter, if I had had one. And although I detest olives I will try the salad & get back to you:D

  8. I've tried a similar recipe (without the olives and with mint) and it was scrumptious.

That looks like a mighty good melon too. I always thump but am not always successful in getting a good sweet one!

Have fun and don't overdo the exercising!!

I love watermelon and feta together...will have to try the added olives....how can it be wrong?

  30. Can't wait to try that watermelon salad-it looks so good. I sort of envy you--having sisters--don't know what it's like. My mother had one, and they had the best relationship. I love my brothers dearly--but they're 5 and 10 years older than I--so we're not as close with each other as they are with one another. Glad you and your sister can enjoy being together---family is everything!

  31. I will definitely try this, because I KNOW I will love it! I love watermelon in anything! Ever had a watermelon margarita? Yummm
I spent the weekend with my sister too--some 6+ hours away!

  34. So funny! I would be sitting on the couch with my sister AND eating watermelon but they're both like your exercise room...I don't have either!

    ReplyDelete
  35. You're a hoot. We DO have an exercise room and I think I walked thru it about a month ago...does that count as exercise?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Sounds like you had a wonderful time! And I have to say that although I love both watermelon and kalamata olives, I'm a little hesitant to try them together in the same dish.

But I will try it because you say so. :)
    xoxo

  37. MMmmm, I've never tried a watermelon salad! Though I must admit I love it with feta cheese, or olives hehe. I don't like too much sweet, you know, so I try to keep the middle way :)

  38. No sports fan here too! And oh my goodness how did you happen to come up with that watermelon salad combo? Sounds like happy times were had with your dear sister Charlotte. The part about your exercise room was so funny! ~Lili
