Only kindness matters

First off, thank you all so much for your kind thoughts (and helpful suggestions) regarding yesterday’s post and the loss of my external hard-drive. It was suggested that I take it to a computer specialist that we occasionally use at our school. He’s the ‘big guns’ we call in when something is really serious. He’ll take a look at it but said it sounds promising because it’s still making power noises.

I am still not too terribly upset about it. Why get all worked up over it only to find that it’s a simple fix? I’m still able to take photos, and will just store them on the hard drive on my laptop here. I am still able to edit the photos in PS, however 90% of my textures (both free downloads and purchased) are on that hard drive. And I have tons of textures. Still – plan on remaining calm until I find out the news.

Ah, well. I only took a few photos today. Took the day off work to do another trip to Johns Hopkins with my husband. It was a follow-up MRI, and all is well for the moment. We were told to have a happy holiday and to do something fun. So that’s good news!! We were both really surprised and glad.

Taken along N. Broadway, just south of Orleans St. in Baltimore

When we got to the city at 9 am, it was sunny and nice. When we left at 2, the sky was laden with clouds and it was quite chilly.

Chesapeake City Bridge, Maryland

I’d just dropped off the hard drive. This bridge is really high and traverses the C&D Canal which is a short cut between the Chesapeake Bay and the Delaware River for all sorts of huge cargo ships, and anybody else who wants to take a short cut.

Dinner

I made angel hair pasta tonight and heated up some homemade spaghetti sauce I had stored in the freezer. I was only planning on eating half of this meal and taking the other half to school tomorrow.

But I love pasta with sauce (and freshly-grated Asiago cheese on top). And besides, the plate is really small.

* burp *

Once again, thanks for your kindness, and for your friendship. I’m still reading many of your comments at this point ~

ps – figured out how to get my signature back. Can’t believe I didn’t think of it last night. I must have been a little bit frazzled!

  1. Great photos and great news of your hubby ! That sucks about the hard drive, I had that happen to me before but thankfully Papa here is a computer wiz, he used to build them so I was able to get mine fixed for free, well ok I made him his favorite treats lol. Hope you can get it sorted out. Have a wonderful evening.

Still crossing my fingers about the hard drive situation.

Sounds to me like you & your hubby got an early Christmas present with the news from the doctor. That's great!

  9. I absolutely could not comment on your post yesterday - the blogger gods/godesses felt I wasn't worthy I guess. Have no idea what I said, but, whatever, I know the pain of a fried hard drive - it stinks!
Hope yours comes back whole, and cheaply!
And, my friend, may your days become sunny!

  12. Oh my goodness, my external hard drive crashed on Monday, and so far all it contained is gone. My techie hubby is trying to do a restore on it and hopefully he can recover it. I have photos of my Mom on there and her family I would have a real hard time getting again. Those photos I would be very upset to lose. All the rest I can just go and take over and that is a fun thing to do! I feel for you, hope you are able to get your photos back!! I will keep my fingers crossed for you as well!

  13. Oh, and I am so glad to hear your hubby is doing well. That is awesome news:)

  14. Oh Kat, how ironic--I opened something on my computer last night that I shouldn't have and immediately had a virus that totally destroyed my computer. I too had 2,000+ pictures on it. I do still have the original photos on CDs, but none of the crops, edits, or changes I had made to the pictures were saved. I will be downloading and editing photos for the next 10 years!!!!! So sorry about yours--hope they can salvage your pics from it. Sometimes something like this helps put things in perspective--a small and minor inconvenience along life's path! Glad things are going well for your husband--my thoughts are with you. Take care and good luck with the computer (the good thing about my "problem" is that I do get a new computer out of the deal). Mickie :)

  15. Losing photos is bad & I can't help there. Textures can be replaced, but what a pain in the butt! All that time spent downloading, yuck! It would make me happy to send you copies of my texture library. I've got over 300; mostly Shadowhouse Creations, with a smattering of Kim Klassen, Leslie Nicole & others. Whatcha think?

  19. Goodness--I'm so happy you were given good news and told to HAVE FUN for the holidays--and I want to hear about it after you "have it"!

That stinks about the external hard drive, and I'm a bit worried now that I've read of so many people losing their pictures, too. I just have a cheap extternal drive--$100, with not all that room you had on yours--and I don't have Photoshop, so I don't even know how to download and use textures...but I do love my family pictures. And the few I've taken of birds and nature that I thought turned out pretty well. I am not sure what to do about saving them in a safer way--but I am so sorry yours burned out--and and hoping your friend at school can get them back for you. Glad you're feeling a bit better about things.

  23. Good morning Kate,

What a pain in the @** with the hard drive. I've thought of mine going down before but so far it hasn't happened. Now I back my photos up on Picasa also. They give you a ton of space for cheap! I've read that some photographers swear by backing their photos up in 3 places!

Glad the appt went well. Sorry you didn't get the lens you wanted. It's a bit like riding a roller coaster, isn't it.

  37. So hoping your pictures can be recovered! The lack of panic in your reaction is a true testament to the fact that you have been through so much with your husband and know that the people in our lives are what really matter! Of course, I greatly admire your gift of photography and hope all will be recovered and SOON!
