Calm yourself woman

It’s late at night and I can’t fall to sleep. I went upstairs about two hours ago, after turning off the lights and locking all the doors. I laid down in bed and thought I heard a noise outside, so I got up to look. And what I saw scared me.

I saw what I thought were headlights slowly coming up the driveway, but quickly realized it was only one headlight, and then a second later saw that it was a flashlight. Someone or some people were walking up our driveway, and had just cleared the woods and were coming toward the house using a flashlight to see.

I got scared. I started thinking of the weird things that have been going on lately on the property here . . . our son found some beer bottles underneath one of the big trees in our front yard. And last week we saw that someone had smashed the pile of clay pigeons at the bottom step of our front porch. Weird little things like that . . . and now someone was walking up the driveway with a flashlight right after I had turned off all the lights.

I dressed quickly and ran down the steps for my phone, then back up again so I could track where the intruders were planning on entering our house. Entering our house. OMG – I don’t even have a weapon! I was really working myself up here . . . and my heart was beating a mile a minute. It looked like they were heading toward that tree I mentioned before . . . and then . . .

The car door opened to the car belonging to our son’s friend. It was parked near the big tree. He had asked to leave it here for a couple of days because he and his fiancé are moving to the area tomorrow and they had wanted to only use one car. Oh, good grief. It was our son’s friends. Oh, huge relief but why they were walking up our driveway at ten o’clock at night is beyond me, but here I was all alone, with a sick husband in an old manor house on a hill in the dark . . .

I e-mailed my sisters because I was still shaking. And Char wrote back right away and said

CALM YOURSELF WOMAN.

And then we had a laugh about it.

This is all that should be walking up our driveway in the middle of the night.

Hello.

DSC_2873 copy 2

I took these Friday evening. The little fawns were back with their mother, and probably her offspring from last year, two young bucks.

Handsome little critters, aren’t they?

The fawns saw me with the camera and ran to their mother.

They leapt through the air with their little tails held high.

Here’s the whole fam damily. All five of them.

I really didn’t mean to react the way I did tonight but damn, that scared me seeing that flashlight slowly come out of the woods toward the house. Would you have been scared?

And now, if I could only get to sleep . . .

Hope your week is a good one. Thanks for stopping by here and for your kind sentiments from last week’s post. All is quiet.

Yes! I would have been scared senseless! We live in the middle of nowhere, so when I see lights coming up the road in the middle of the night and I'm alone, I tend to freak out! I don't blame you one bit for being scared! And I hope that whatever is going on with the mystery visitor is figured out soon! Probably kids, but they need to stay off your property and leave well enough alone!

The deer are lovely! It's sweet to see a small family herd together. It doesn't happen often.

Sweet dreams!

I wouldn't be any more brave then you were...seriously we heard a noise outside tonight, and none of the security lights came on...that's not a good feeling.

Keep calm and hug George...that should be your new motto.

Now go to sleep...

C'mon, George, do your duty! I rely on the cricket security system...if 2000 crickets suddenly shut up THEN I'll worry about what's out there.
Insomnia stinks.

I would have been scared and then pissed. Whoever it was would bear the brunt of my wrath; no one better be coming unannounced up my driveway at night. I'd be calling the sheriff and have a large shotgun in my hands to greet them. Too bad I don't have a large watch dog.

I'd be scared, too. I have a very vivid imagination but, even so, it's not right to walk up someone's rural driveway that late at night unannounced. They probably just figured you were sound asleep and were trying to be polite but I would have freaked out, too!

Yes, I would have been a little scared. And I would have gotten my phone in hand ready to dial, and loaded my .22. My Aussie would do a good job of being noisy and intimidating, but I wouldn't want him to get hurt!

Pictures amazing as always, and if that happened to me I would have been scared as well. :)

of course! When we lived on our boat, I had a flair gun. One night we woke up to someone actually on deck about us and the sound of kitty skittering around away from the stranger!
Perhaps a judicious, um, defense strategy? Joe Biden suggests a shot gun and knowing how to use it. Just saying. I believe you would be collected enough NOT to shoot a "friendly." A certain calm comes with confidence. I (on the other hand) did something really stupid:

Good morning, Kate!

Char is a hoot! Glad everything was okay because I would have been freaking out too!

Love the deer. We had a mom with two babies in the backyard last week. Aren't they the sweetest?

Devon said...

George? Hello? Oh well, my big dog tends to sleep through much more than I do! That would have scared me also.

Lili said...

Oh Kate I can imagine how scary that was...big hugs to you. Those dear family photos are amazing! xoxo

That would have freaked me out some. How did George react? I usually look to my animals to provide a barometer of the situation. Glad to hear it all turned out alright. The other things going on though...that doesn't sound very good...

I was alone one night last winter, sitting watching a movie, in our living room that has no window coverings (read: fishbowl) when there was a knock on the only door in our house that has no window to see through. It was inky black outside and our yard light wasn't working. My dog went ballistic and starting barking her head off. I went to the bedroom window, which gives me a view of the door and saw a young man standing there in the dark, in a hoodie. I let my dog bark while I asked him what I could do for him. He said his car had broken down up the road and could I help him. I told him there wasn't much I could do for him other than call someone and I sent him next door to our one and only neighbour. Fortunately, the guy was home and helped him out. I felt bad not letting him inside to warm up, yet, I just didn't feel comfortable, being that I was all alone. Our road is a no-thru road, so I wondered what he was doing driving out here on a snowy winter night and I still think it's weird that he didn't have a cell phone to call someone for help, especially nowadays.

Oh, yes! I would have been alarmed as well!

Deer are such lovely creatures, in spite of the problems they cause for gardens.

I continue to send you happy thoughts!

I certainly would have been nervous and probably would have already called police! Glad that all was well!

Those deers made me smile this Monday morning :-)

Actually, it should have been "those deer"..... But I am guessing no one is judging me on my grammar!

Good Morning! I hope the goodness sweeps the tiredness away...
I just came across your blog last night and have really enjoyed reading all your older posts.

I would have been scared too...I had a very frightening thing happen to me several years ago and it's changed so many things in my life. It's just hard to shake, but I think I need to start living by that quote and learn a new way to handle things. :)

I really have enjoyed spending time here. xo Sarah

anyone would be scared and if they said they wouldn't be...they're fibbing. I've had many a scare here in the woods, at night, alone, with small kids, while husband was working the midnight shift. so glad is all turned out and you can laugh about it. Next time maybe they'll call and let you know...just a thought!! Take care Kate... and I agree with the keep calm and hug George motto... :)

Sounds as if a small pep talk is called for on the demerits of wandering about peoples gardens at night (even with a good(ish)reason.)

Great dear pictures though - I reckon one of these wandering in the garden at night could make some worrying noises too.

I'm with ya on the being scared.
At least you have George with you.

On Saturday night, the girls and I had just gone upstairs when we heard a huge noise followed by two men talking.

I live in a housing development but down a long driveway surrounded by woods on three sides.

No one ever comes down my driveway.

Both dogs barked like crazy.

So, off I went to check on things. Nothing.

I went back upstairs and my heart was beating so fast.

Next day, I find out that a huge branch had fallen and a whole section of fence is out.

The voices, maybe just echoing in the night but still I'm with ya with being scared.

xo,
JC

Keep your phone next to wherever you are sleeping, AND I would suggest purchasing a gun that you are comfortable with and take lessons to learn how to use it properly. Living in the country can be scary at times. Take care!

You were calmer than I would have been - I would have immediately dialed 911!!!!
Glad it turned out to be your son's friends!!

Love your Deer!! especially LOVE that you got them "prancing"

That last shot has me gasping for air.... it took my breath away!

Linda said...

I agree with Daryl, keep your phone with you. The police would rather you call and not need them than to need them and not call. Ask me how I know :)
Be well my friend.

Beautiful deer and funny story. Isn't it funny how fast our minds go to the worst case scenario?

Donna S. said...

Scary indeed!! Make sure you have good locks & do keep your phone near where you sleep. I have mixed feelings about a gun although I've heard just the sound of pumping a shotgun will scare most people off because everyone knows that sound (even if there are no bullets!)

Keep hanging in there Kate.

Sylvia said...

Whew! So glad everything was OK.
I live in an apartment building, and one time someone was outside fiddling with the doorknob and the lock, and I was sure he meant to break in. I was shaking but decided to yell at him to stop it and go away; that I was calling the police. Turns out it was just an elderly neighbor who got off on the wrong floor. So odd to go from panic to sheepishness!

Sarah said...

I would have been petrified!! :)

Oh sweetie... that really DOES sound scary!! I would have recommended a LARGE snifter of something alcoholic (for purely medicinal purposes) after that. Heavens.

DARLING shots of the deer. Oh those white fluffy tails - heavenly!!

Thanks for dropping by my place and helping me choose Calendar photos. Your opinion matters!!

Of course I would have been scared. I have been in a similar situation and was terrified. Mine was a tad more sinister but it turned out just fine. Being Canadian, I recoil (pun intended) at that thought of owning a gun.

I would have shot a round over their head and then asked who they were. Good thing it happened to you and not me, cause I would have scared them to death...

I definitely would have freaked out! One night, my husband was out of town, and I was awaken by what turned out to be a cop banging on my front door. A guy had been running from them and crashed his motorcycle in our front yard! My "ferocious" 7 lb mutt was going to tear them apart, lol.

Andi said...

OH my gosh, I would have peed myself. I had a moment, for the first time in my life, a few weeks ago, where I wished and wished I had a weapon. I did not like the feeling at all. Thank goodness your scare was nothing!

Absolutely yes, I would have been scared, especially because our house was just broken into on Saturday (while we were gone). But it's better to be aware and cautious than oblivious, don't you think?

It would have scared me also, especially as there has been funny goings on!

So so glad it was friends, but whats that about the weird things happening? That would totally freak me out too. We live off the beaten track as well and lights in the middle of nowhere are just out of place.
I've been out of my regular routine lately so I'm just catching up and I'm sorry to hear about these heavy times for you dear Kate. Saying prayers of wellness and healing light your way so they shine on all who has need.
peace n love,
