This is my friend, Lauren. She’s the famous Mental Pause Mama. But this is not George she’s petting. He looks like George from here though, doesn’t he?
This is Danger the border collie and he’s owned by Sam and Mary Ann, parents of Janice, who hosted last weekend’s Blog Fest in Virginia. He’s a sweet dog.
Danger did not run from the Mama. Danger loved his kisses and pets.
A week ago today, I was packed and ready for my trip to Virginia and awaiting my friends’ arrival at my house. Lauren and Daryl were on the way, with Annie close behind. I was sitting at my computer, catching up on e-mail, when I heard someone shout, “It’s GEORGE!!!!”
They had arrived and I hadn’t even heard them come up the lane! I went outside to see two excited people, but no George. “He ran away”, Daryl told me. “I think we scared him.”
Lauren told me that George doesn’t like her and he ran off.
My George is shy. I guess I hadn’t really realized to what extent it was it until then. He was very skittish to let them pet him and was hiding behind my husband’s legs. I was sort of embarrassed that my dog had some social issues but when you think of the family dynamics, it all makes sense.
His master got sick. We don’t entertain a lot of visitors at the house and my husband and the dog spend lots of time together. It’s very quiet here. And he’s very protective of us. We’re his people and it’s his job.
Maybe I should get Danger to give him some tips?
Oddly enough, George is all over our guest, David, who arrived from Lake Tahoe the other evening. He’s his new best friend and I just can’t figure it out.
Don’t cry, Mama. Give him another chance!
Until tomorrow, my friends . . .

What a great name: Danger da dog. And what a cool picture of him....

George loved me too! So there!
It's okay George. Sometimes you just have to get to know people before you can open up. I"m sure the next time you see your Mom's friends you'll be much more sociable.
It's OK George....My Sophie does not like but a hand full of people, and if any one strange comes by, she barks and barks and barks...no amount of coaxing will shut her up...talk about embarrassing....I think we need the dog whisperer around our house!
I have to say I love that name also- Danger..I wish I could think of cool names like that when I get dogs!! George sounds completely normal for how he is raised, as you pointed out you don't entertain a lot, he's got his routine and liking male guests over female- think about it, his best buddy is a male..makes sense. Although I'd love to mee the famous George and smother him with hugs and kisses too if I ever got the chance..maybe I'd wear a mustache and that would make him THINK I'm a guy...hahahaha..uff..sorry I'm still a woman with an incredibly bad sense of humour!! You should come over to my site and check out miss Jenny..she's growing..I'll bet George OR Danger would like her ;-))
Happy Friday my friend..
George is so good looking! I love those eyes. They remind me of Buddy's.
Ah, I am so in love with George.
Glad you had such a good time
We have a border collie on the farm - they tend to be one-man dogs and they are very protective. I would guess that George is OK when one person at a time comes - then he can judge what YOU think sbout that person, and if you approve he can then begin to make a fuss of them - if two or three arrive together and you are not there - then he does not respond in the same way. This is only a guess but is certainly true of our Tip.
That is a striking picture of George! He is such a poser.
They are beautiful dogs, I just love George's eyes, his face is just so full of intelligence. I am finding comfort in your George stories as we just lost our beloved Aussie suddenly on Wednesday. Hold your precious pup near and dear and give him big hugs everyday!
Sounds like maybe George just prefers men at this point in his life...
It's okay, George... we girl bloggers still love you.... :-)

Hm...I wonder if George would love me...
What a love triangle...
Mama loves George
George is scared of Mama
Trouble loves Mama
I smell a Hollywood screenplay!
Well, he sorta made up for it on Sunday;) I loved Danger, but George still has his special place in my heart.
Gosh...MPM looks 13!
And, LOL up there at AsthmaGirl;)
You are a part of my daily routine. I wake up every morning, check my email, then go to your blog to see what thoughts you have today. Thanks for being there!
Oh my gawd Lauren, make Kate your official photographer you are positively glowing in these pix .. oh wait it was a gazillion degrees of hot ;-)
Yeah...what's up with male animals being more social with male humans?
Both dogs are beautiful and I just can never get enough of them!!
MPM does photograph like a teenager!
Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.
Fun post. Makes me miss Bingo.
Now I really want to meet George. Oh, and you too!
It's just that George is an extremely intelligent dog and knows that Daryl and Lauren are not real people. Avitars are not supposed to jump out of the computer and walk up to your front door. Your mistake was allowing him to read their blogs. Really, Kate.. you should be limiting his online time. :)
And I have to agree that Lauren looks like a very young puppy herself.
That Laurel should be a model. She does not take a bad picture.
I'd love to meet George. Is he available next weekend?
ahhh...can't believe that george was a shy guy...
maybe he just has to warm up to his guests ^..^
Those are beautiful shots of MPM and Danger. Isn't MPM just beautiful? I wanna be that beautiful when I grow up (which I am utterly and completely refusing to do right now).
George is a total looker. I love how you capture his "expressions" and then are able to so wonderfully articulate the relationship between your dog and you and your hubby. It's really something to read!
Scary how much they look alike!
Your pictures make me appreciate the beauty of Border Collies! I'm more of a Australian Shepherd girl since I have two, but one of these days I think I need to get my boys to make new doggie friends so I can play with a border collie up close :)
Are you sure that's MPM? She's not saying "prunes" in those pictures!!
LOVE the dog shots....such beautiful animals:)
Riley would approve of George's caution - he is very protective of our place, and of us. Especially against the depredations of that awful UPS man!
It's really kind of surprising about George. I guess because we've 'seen' him so much on your blog that we assume he's a big, outgoing camera hound and will love on anyone who just might throw the frisbee for him. I guess that's an example of how much I live in my computer...
Helen
Great post! George is just such a fixture in your blog, that it would be assumed he was one of the gang. But boys will be boys, and that goes for our dogs too! :-)
That's a great dog. : )
