The dark side

I arrived home from work this afternoon in a foul mood, having nearly fallen asleep behind the wheel from the sheer exhaustion. I spent the entire day going at full throttle, trying to catch up from all the snow days we’ve had at school. There is so much work to do. Luckily, I remained awake, collected the mail from the box at the end of the driveway (always a dangerous mission) and when I pulled  up to the house, I found a soaking wet box, sitting in the rain – a delivery from FedEx. All I could think of was that it was the new card stock that I had just ordered.

And my foul mood deepened.

Carrying everything into the house, I knocked over the snow shovel, earning me a ‘look’ from my husband who cheerfully asked me if I was having a bad day. Note to all you cheerful people out there: Don’t be all smiles and light when someone is having a bad day. It’s always best to give us a wide berth. And some time to cool down.

Normally, I would change my clothes and head outside for a walk but something is up with my ankle and I’m taking the day off. I believe that the snow boots I’ve been wearing for the past several weeks are the cause for the ankle pain, so I’ve been wearing a brace all day. I think a walk would be good for my mood, but I know it’s the wrong thing for the ankle.

Things must be really bad, because I poured myself a drink, something I rarely do, breaking my ‘no drinking during the week’ rule.  Thankfully my husband had the courtesy to keep his mouth shut.

Things could be worse - oh Lord do I ever know that things could be worse. I apologize for not being my normal self today.

One bright spot is that it wasn’t the card stock that was in the soaking wet box but rather an Emile Henry pie plate that was a free gift from CSN Stores for hosting their recent giveaway on my blog.

That was a nice surprise.

And the black and white is trying his best to make me feel better. God, I love this dog.

And that’s all I have to say about that.

Please tell me your day was better.

Love,

Well thank goodness it was not the card stock. Some poor person at Fedex might have gone home with a bad day after that phone call.

Um...just as I sit here, the smoke alarm is going off.

Yep, there is smoke in the entire apartment, and the router has caught fire...again.

The reno guy is having a bad day.

I hope your mood has improved, Buttercup! Ooh, a new pie plate. I'm giddy at the thought!

Can't wait to see your new pie plate!
An average day here...trying to lower my stress level so that I can do my shopping tomorrow! George is such a happy soul, you can't but lighten up around him!

TexWisGirl said...

Oh hurray that a pie plate can take any kind of moisture and cold that Mother Nature can bring to your doorstep! George should have told Hubby it was out there! :)

He's a cute boy. I'd forgive him for the oversight too. :)

Glad you're home safe and sound and warm - with a fuzzy pup, a quiet husband and a good, stiff drink!

And a pretty black kitty cat too!

oh sweet thing...
you have no idea how i wished i lived down the road from you so i could read this, jump in my car and come over in my jammies with the legs tucked into my uggs, wet hair from my late late late afternoon shower and eat oatmeal chocolate chip cookies with you, while i sit on your couch wrapped in the throw you have in your family room.

because really. if i lived that close. that's what you'd have to put up with :)

We are having rolling blackouts here in Texas because of the cold weather. Can you believe that water pipes at TX power plants are bursting! They weren't insulated! WHAT!!!! So I haven't been able to warm up the house at all today! So I'm a little bit in a foul mood too!!!

Caroline said...

Awww... I would join you and Beth if I lived near by too. I love posts like this... just confirms that you are human too. Not every day is perfect. Cheers!

LIsten, I bought myself a pair of Uggs......those warm, tall boots........wore them for a couple of months....and have such heel pain, I can barely walk....
Gave the Uggs away last week, my heel is slowly getting better......they are too flat and not for me.
sorry you had a bad day, they happen.
you know that.
hope tomorrow is better!!!

Well let's see - does drinking 64 ounces of Gatorade with Miralax so I can be "prepped" for surgery tomorrow make it sound like I had a better day than you? ;o)

So sorry you had a bad day - so glad that the soaked box was NOT your card stock and so, so happy your black and white is there to cheer you. And what the heck - have two!! ;o)

Well. My favorite schizophrenic resident is a little less hallucinatory today. Maybe.

That pretty much constitutes a good day around here!

Think a good stiff drink is well in order. Cheers!

Sorry Miss Kate. Bad days are no fun. Period. I've been thinking of you today tho, and wondered what your snow situation was. I also wonder if you've watched Downton Abbey. Random.

Don't you hate days like that which just seem to go from bad to worse. Hoping tomorrow is better and brings you smiles and laughter.

I've been feeling less than chipper the last several days. I'd like to blame it all on my hormones, but that would probably be unfair.

Today, though, I started my day with four back-to-back sales. Small ones, but welcome, nonetheless. Nothing puts a spring in my step like a sale. I'm so shallow...

Isn't it wonderful how the Universe just KNEW you were in need of a present and made sure one was waiting on your front stoop for you when you got home. As for George, well, there just isn't anything better than furry love.

xoxo
Feel better soon.

Tonight, it's difficult watching the news.

The situation in Egypt took a turn for the worse today.

A category 5 cyclone in Australia, as if they haven't already been through enough with the flooding.

And in our own country, a terrible winter storm is sweeping through 30 states, stranding people on highways.

Calming breath.

So glad you're home, safe & sound, speaking from my former EMT self!

I hate that you had such a bad day but it confirms to us all that you're human... AND honest enough to tell everyone that you've had a bad day *smile*.

Hope you have a nice, relaxing evening! Hang in there... tomorrow will be better!

Country Girl said...

Thanks, all.

And no, I haven't watched Downtown Abbey, Becky. Totally missed that one. But I just put it in my queue at Netflix. Very long wait, though ~

Tomorrow is another day... Sorry you had a bad one! And dogs make everything better, unless they smell like skunk...just sayin!

You don't have to wait to see Downton Abbey, just go to pbs.org and watch the full episodes, no waiting, just watching! I think you'll like it, I'm addicted.

Have a good evening!

Think about how much you'll appreciate it if tomorrow is better having made it through such a bad one today. Hang in there and enjoy the drink and the company of that good man and dog. ~chris

I'm a little cranky, too. And, wait, I'll just pour myself a drink. I'd hate for you to drink alone on such a foul night....

Gosh Kate, I've had so many bad days in the past couple months that I can totally sympathize. At least you had a couple bright spots, George and the pie plate.

Still sometimes all you need is a good nights sleep to wipe the day away.

I'm sorry you had a stinky day.

My day was AWESOME. We're in the middle of a series of snow days, after a whole day of blizzard yesterday. Snow days rock.

My mom has been here a couple of days and the teenagers have enjoyed talking with her and playing cards. I burned most of a chess board for my brother (fleur de lis on the dark squares).

It's been peaceful. :) Hope tomorrow is better for you. Sleep well!

Don't feel guilty about having a bad day... we all get them. It is amazing how sensitive dogs can be to our moods. Mine always stays close to whoever is sad.

I hope you have a good week.

Yeah, I've been in a pretty bad mood for the entire month of January... but lately something has started to crack.

Maybe my head.

Anyway, I hope things get better. Make some pie. And then eat the whole thing. That should do it. :)

Today will be better.

Here's to a clean slate, a new day and a fresh chance at more lightness and way less darkness.

Or, just put your head down and plow forward until January and February are behind you. That's my plan.

Maybe we have to go through days like that in order to better appreciate the really ordinary days, not to mention the really great ones!

I do hope today is better!

Sorry you had a bad day Kate! Have a cup of soothing tea, and I will too. We are going into our 3rd day of missing work and school. Talk about cabin fever. we were able to get out for a couple of hours yesterday. hope you have a great day today, hang in there, wish I could say it's the end of snow, but let's leave it at that. hug those you love and be thankful for the things you have!

I think we all have days like that and we have to struggle through them, go to bed and hope the next day is better. Dogs do their best to get us out of the mire - I am sure they know.

Love to tell you my day was better, but sorry, I will wallow with you. I always feel so guilty when I have a bad day because as you said, it could be so much worse. But, that doesn't minimize the stress of our own days right? There has just been too much to deal with here in the last six months and the little daily. annoyances are starting to be bigger than they should be, and I am having a hard time regrouping and finding my center again. Hope tomorrow is better for you!

One of my favorite children's books is Alexander and Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day...Just saying that will sometimes pull me out of a small slump:)

I used to have a terrible time staying awake while driving especially at certain times of the day...VERY scary and dangerous. I pulled over frequently!

45 more days until the first day of spring if that makes you feel better:)

Kate, so sorry to hear of you bad day. Mine is going ok. I am off work til Monday due to the snow, and I just found out my tax refund should be here today. Yea! Too bad my car is buried under a snow drift, lol. Keep warm, T

Those black and whites can make anything better. Even old grump butt Star my paint. He's a luv bug (as long as you're not riding him) and makes me smile.

I understand about the ankle. I severely sprang mine and to tell ya the truth it could have been cracked. Too hard headed to go to the Dr. about it. Certain footwear really aggrevates it.

Hope you are feeling better now!

At least it was a dish instead of paper. I had a bad day too but I just went to my room, found a cat and took a small nap. (my neck pain is causing me all sorts of trouble and it gets to me sometimes)

I do hope you have a better day today ....

I'm so sorry you had a rotten day, and have felt bad. (Seems like those days are on the rise for a lot of us.) Glad your card stock wasn't in the box. God save us from all the happy cheerful people when we're not in the mood for it, huh!

And even the apostle Paul didn't mind advising a "little wine for the stomach"--and if it helped the mind as well--hey, nothing wrong with that. You ARE of drinking age, aren't you!?

Glad you have a cheerful hubby, still, though--and always--the "barking, black and white love machine!"

Aw man sorry you had a bad day! It happens to all of us and I love your blog all the more for these honest posts! The other day when I was shoveling I fell "ass over tea kettle" (as my nana would say)! I hit the ground hard and ended up cry-laughing - some days are just better than others!

Here's to a great tomorrow!
