First off, see the post below for the Giveaway winner announcement.
That having been said, let’s get to today’s post which is chock full of swirly loveliness. I went to a local florist over the weekend, looking for flowers to purchase so that I could bring them home and photograph them.
There was the usual array of roses, carnations, gerbera and regular daisies – but I kept searching the refrigerated room and was finally rewarded. I’ve always wanted to photograph calla lillies.
Unfortunately, they were all spoken for except for these three which I presumed were the runts of the litter.
I bought them regardless, because they were a little different, sort of swirly, and I thought they would make great subjects for my macro lens.
They’re a little camera shy, but I got them to glow for me in the afternoon light on my bedroom windowsill.
I love swirls.
These are my sister Charlotte’s favorite flower. She carried calla lillies on her wedding day, but I only got to see them in her photos because I was in the hospital having my first child.
Charlotte, I’m so sorry that it was my idea to lock you in the attic when we were young so that you couldn’t win our mother’s Be Nice contest again. You were the best of the bunch of us, and when you kept winning the contest week after week, I needed to resort to taking you out of it, so that someone else (namely, me) could win.
I’m sorry I made you cry. Even though you say you don’t remember it at all.
Because I never forgot that I did something so mean.
I hope you like these flowers, because they are for you.
Love,
or as you know me, your big sister, Katy.

The Be Nice Contest was something my mother came up with as a way to get her 7 children to treat each other kindly. The weekly winner received a dinner at the local McDonald's (a real treat in our family) with our mother. Our dad got to stay home and feed the rest of us creamed chipped beef on toast.
Charlotte won every week. Because she really was the sweetest little child.
After the attic incident, the contest was discontinued. And I was in big trouble.
The End.

OMG!! Made me laugh!
Those callas are really beautiful! Great job! And cheers to Sweet Charlotte...
Beautiful.
And.. I still apologize to my sister for the awfulness of my older-sister-ness back in the day.
Gee, I have no idea why YOU didn't earn the special treat!
Very funny!
You made a wise investment in those 3 lilies. They're beautiful against the blue.
You wee brat! ;) That was funny. I'm sure your sister will love your beautiful peace offering. :)
What a lovely thing to do for your sister (I hope my girls will come around someday). I will say...these photos take my breath away. The tones are gorgeous...so soft and feminine.
Or is she only saying she doesn't remember because she's still too nice to make you feel bad?! Gosh that is just the coolest gesture for your sister. I just can't imagine you as a "mean girl" though. What a great childhood story! So funny. xo ~Lili
Simply beautiful flower photos. The curves are so wonderful to look at....so soft and comforting. Your photos made my day!!!
oh...it is late...almost 9:30 your time...but we wanted to stop by and wish you and George a Happy Valentines Day...
sending love,
kary and teddy

Oh, locking your Wonderfully Nice Sister in the attic? Now that is one good story. She might need some more calla lillies, but hopefully she's forgiven you...
Unlike my sisters who will never forget when I served them undercooked pork sausage (I chose to call it "blackened" with just a touch of pink on the inside. My mother chose to call the pediatrician who had us gulp down Ipecac and gag in the back yard.)
Sisters.
Beautiful photos! Love the swirls.
One word....Gorgeous!
xo
Happy Valentine's Day!
If those flowers were the runt of the litter I would love to see how gorgeous the others were! These are great shots. I love the swirly softness that you captured! Happy Valentine's Day!
Dreamy perfection, Kate. REALLY gorgeous!
Oh my, that made me smile and it brought tears to my eyes. My big brother did a lot of means things when we were kids, but now I know he would do absolutely anything for me. Love your photos, I'm sure your sister will, too.
This post made me smile, along with your explanation of the Be Nice contest in your comment! The flower photos are gorgeous! Is Charlotte the baby? I'm the baby in my family, and although I don't how sweet I was, I'm sure that if there had been a Be Nice Contest I would have found myself in the attic too! ;-)
Kat :)
beautiful pics and too funny!!!!!
beautiful kate....
can you believe that at age 20 and with my mother planning most of my wedding, since i was 3 hours away and she was back home where the wedding would take place and me not caring at all what flowers i carried, that she chose calla lillies.....
i really had no idea or memory to how gorgeous they truly are....sheesh, i was 20 for pete's sake.....
beautiful shots. and yes, those sibling relationships, right? *smile*
just ask my sister about the time i pinched a blood blister on my sister's nose.
Kate, those lilies are splendid! I, too, love the curves and the beautiful colors. Thanks so much for being "nice" and "sharing" with us!! I think you should go to Mc.Donalds first thing tomorrow.....;o)
Callas are my favorite too! Breath-taking photos! You never disappoint! Love the story behind the photos!
Love the photos..just gorgeous - so soft and curvy.
Your photos are beautiful..your story is too funny! Oh, the things we did as kids! Thank you for the smile!
I love callas too. Well--most flowers (and birds-if you take the pictures!) I can't believe I was so busy Saturday that I didn't get here and missed the contest! But--I'm not much good at winning anyway! Still, I always kinda feel like a winner just coming by.
You know--still feeling a little guilt over that little scheme so long ago...well...shows what a sweet person you really are. So don't try to deny it and say you're still a meany!
Won't work!
Beautiful macro shots!
this is so beautiful!
I believe these are also called peace lilies sometimes...beautiful.
Are you kidding me??? You devil. You.
Just beautiful...those flowers and your story. I was the youngest and only girl in my family...so I was always the nicest :)
smiling at the blooms and stories...be nice kate!!:)
That's a lovely post, Kate. And the picture of the lilly is absolutely beautiful. You have inspired me to use practice with the macro on some snow drops and aconites we have in the garden.

Those pictures are gorgeous!!!!!!!!! Isn't it funny what we remember (& what we did as children!!!).
I simply would have NEVER won that contest.......ever....smiles.
You LOCKED HER IN THE ATTIC? I know that it was wrong, but I gotta say -- that's brilliant! :)
But this is very sweet, and your pictures are GORGEOUS!!!
that was funny! The things I use to do to my younger brother. poor kid, it's a wonder he grew up being half way normal. it's funny how I wouldn't let anyone else pick on him, though. aaaahhh the memories!
Beautiful.

So beautiful. I think us big sisters may all have a thing or two to appologize for....
Great story! I never had any siblings, but I can imagine how competitive I would have been in such a scenario. Wish I would have thought of this contest with my 3 kids who were always fighting! Hope you have a wonderful day. :)
Beautiful photos. My siblings were older then me and out and about with their lives by the time I was 6. Our farm animals took their place, when I was growing up lol I was head butted by our ram, pecked by our goose and had my horse stop drop and roll as I was on him lol and take a different route when jumping when I thought he was going to jump and I landed on the fences, hey who needs human siblings lol Have a great day !
And all most trampled by a herd of cattle! I could go on but I wont lol .
Love your story! But those photos?
Incredibly lovely. Just incredible.
When you get them made into cards, I want a bunch.
Those are absolutely stunning. You've captured them beautifully.
And, it's never too late to say "I'm sorry".
*Hugs*
Okay .. once, well maybe more than once, I pinched my younger sister when she was sleeping .. GAH she was so annoying ... but dont tell her cause I dont think she ever knew what woke her up .. I told her it was a monster .. hehehe .. love those swirls, I played with the macro and a Glassybaby ....
Oh, these are gorgeous Kate. Love the swirly bits too! :)
I love calla lilies too, and your photos are gorgeous.
Hi Kate, that is such a funny story. Very good of you to own up to it. I'm sure Charlotte forgives you (especially if she doesn't remember). The calla lillies are just beautiful. Wonderful compositions.
Oh my - now that's a story! And, a great way to apologize! Perhaps these will be note cards? They are gorgeous!!!
I am in love with that first photo of the lilly. Beautiful.
The calla lillies are gorgeous. I love the close up swirls. Thanks for sharing your sister story.
I took my Valentine flowers outside to photograph them today, and thought of you! ;)
Those flower shots are wonderful!! Love the whole feel of them.
(hey, my brother used to lock us in the basement...)
gasp.
seriously.
You see beauty in such a stunning way.
and the little confession is endearing. now.
then . probably not so much.
Kate, would you mind sharing what you used for the teal backdrop for your lilies?
