Vive la différence

Today is one day closer to the weekend. Lately, I live for the weekends – this coming from someone who really likes her job. This week, I found myself being short with people, which is something I don’t usually do. But I also noticed that I’ve mostly only been snappy with people who seem to get on my nerves in the first place.

But enough of that.

Today I’m sharing three different photographs using texture layers. If you’re new to the use of textures in digital photography, I wrote a tutorial last year about it.

Texture Tutorial

DSC_0014 copy 2

This was taken on the George Washington Bridge, NY last summer on the way to Maine. The original photo was really boring and I wanted to add a little ooomph to it.

Textures applied: Florabella’s Seaside, Les Brumes Texture 190. The Les Brumes was a freebie.

This is the manor house in early Spring. I’m not usually this heavy-handed with the texture but it’s fun to off the grid every now and then.

Lenabem’s Texture – 165, Shadowhouse Creations brush. The brush and the texture are both free, although a linkback is required with the texture.

DSC_0935 copy 2

One of the parents brought these beautiful peonies for the school office and I took them home for the weekend because their scent was so wonderful.

And I wanted to take pictures of them.

And I kept them here.

Florabella’s Platinum (warm) and Chardonnay. The framed print in the background is one I purchased on etsy at Grainne Photography. I put it in a matted frame that I bought on sale at Kohl’s.
I love Grainne Photography.

Forever young (print)

Three different photos – and several different texture links for you.

Right now on the TV is the Singing Survivor Show but I’m only half watching. I can tell we’re getting old when we realize that we both prefer the duet with Tony Bennett and Haley Reinhart vs. the number that just made my husband change the channel. Rap music is painful. I think I’ll chill out and just watch a movie.
Until then . . .

The pictures look awesome! The one of the bridge is unreal! I love it! You should get it printed on a canvas! WOW!

There is definitely some Ooomph on the bridge now! Gorgeous!

I also like the Manor House texture and how it looks like a painting. Very cool!

I'm also on my way to checking out your texture tutorial... thanks!

Oooh, my fave is that bridge! Outstanding! I'll have to view your tutorial ... starting to experiment with textures but going the easy way first with Picnik!

We're still watching the singing survivor show ... thank goodness we can fast forward! You really have missed much so far ... I just want to get to the end! Fingers crossed for Scotty.

Beautiful pictures.
Yes, it is sad when the crap they play on these shows is so R rated that kids can't watch the results.
Ridiculous.

Love your wonderful use of textures. And we all have days when the people who annoy us the most...annoy us a little extra and make us cranky!

Great job with the textures... Ah, peonies, I can't wait. Mine are just little buds right now.
And I am also happy that it is one day closer to the weekend. Whew.

The photos are stunning! I'm trying to find the time to do more with my photography . . .

Sometimes it's OK to be cranky, especially if you're dealing with people all day long!

That photograph of your home looks as though it has been done with a palette-knif - I do like the textured idea.

Thanks for sharing the photos and the tutorial. This is really helpful. I am trying to learn more about textures but don't really know where to start :) The bridge photo is amazing, it has a lot of atmosphere.

All the best,
This Good Life

I've been over the GWB a lot lately, but never with my camera in hand. LOVE all your textured images, but somehow that one speaks to me this morning... :)

And it's funny how sometimes it's the little things that push us over the edge... I swear that if my daughter leaves one more red plastic cup in the den, I will start to collect them all and throw them into her room and shut the door!

OK, off to meditate now. lol

Love your photos. I get snappy to with people that are snotty to me, guess we all have our quirks lol. Have a great day !

The texture you added to the picture of the house makes it look like a mural on a plaster wall. Beautiful. I can almost smell the peonies. One of my favorite flowers.

Eventually I WILL have a peony bush somewhere in my yard. A promise I make to myself.

When the rap music came on our channel got changed too, funny! Love the texture on your Geo. Wash. bridge. image. And I've never seen such a dramatic texture as the one on the manor house, that's so cool to see the effect it has on that shot. xo ~Lili

It is fun to play with textures! Love the GWB and those peonies!

As for Idol...my favorite song was Haley and Tony Bennett too:)

I'm having trouble with Blogger/Google commenting on many posts so I am hoping you get this!..and hoping they fix it soon!

Always a feast for the eyes...my pansy prints are exquisite!!!

I don't know where to start with the textures either. I guess I'll have to go to the library and find out how to do it. But I'm so not good at reading how--I need the hands on approach. I'm afraid even if you had the time, VA and MD are not close enough for me to walk over and ask you to show me!! :)

By the way...one of the most profound statements you have ever put on here is:
Rap music is so painful. THANK YOU, so much. It is. Music is not exactly the word I would give it, but hey, everyone has opinions.

Love the texture work on the bridge Kate! I've discovered it's rather fun and quite addictive to play with textures. Thanks for all of your inspiration. : )

So beautiful, Kate. You should be making millions from these photographs.

Have a great weekend, CJ xx

You know--I meant to say, too--I love the delicacy of the first picture--the Brooklyn Bridge, but also--the "heavy-handed, mad painter-like Manor House picture is really stunning to me. Textures are really amazing.

Love the pics. The treatment on the bridge photo makes it look like an old photo fished out of a box of old photos. Nice!
