Been kicked by the wind, robbed by the sleet

I don’t know where these songs come from sometimes – these tunes that appear magically in my head, especially when I have a visual prompt.

I’d been looking at photos I’d taken earlier this month, and believe me there aren’t many. I’m usually a picture-takin’ fool, but I’ve been going through a dry patch lately.

It isn’t necessarily a bad thing, though.

And then I came across this particular picture. I remember that I happened to have the macro lens on the camera when I captured this toad in our backyard a couple of weeks ago. We’d had no rain to speak of and the grass had turned brown and crispy. (It’s quite nice right now after all the rain last week, however).

And anyway, I thought Mr. Toad here looked down and dirty but still willin’. And then this song started playing in my brain. I haven’t thought of this song in about 40 years and I guess I’m really showing my age here. I believe I was in high school when I first heard it.

Please don’t judge me about the reference to drugs. * gasp *

.

I been warped by the rain, driven by the snow
I'm drunk and dirty don't ya know, and I'm still, willin'
Out on the road late at night, Seen my pretty Alice in every head light
Alice, Dallas Alice

I've been from Tuscon to Tucumcari
Tehachapi to Tonapah
Driven every kind of rig that's ever been made
Driven the back roads so I wouldn't get weighed
And if you give me: weed, whites, and wine
And you show me a sign
I'll be willin', to be movin'

I led a very sheltered life...went to an all-girl Catholic school for 12 years! Can't say I've ever heard this song much less the band!
I do like Mr. Toad. Have you seen the baby wrens?

Heard Linda Ronstadt's version many years ago--and loved this one, too. Will ignore the weeds, whites AND wine--if you'll show me sign!!

Love that line... and I love toads. My cat has a new thing lately of killing frogs, but I think toads taste bad because he leaves them alone.

I thought I would be familiar with the song and Little Feat but they must have been after my runnin' time but it was fun seeing the clothes they were wearing.

Regarding Mr. Toad... I always thought toads had a great stoic look about them. I can feel the bumps on him just by looking at that great shot you caught.

Thanks for sharing this guy.

I'm going to have to google it and listen to it. I'm sure I will recognize it with the music though. I'll have to put my flower child garb on and give a listen! Hopefully no flashbacks will become of it. Hey did you know there's a cool toad pic on your post today....haha xo ~Lili

Great toad shot!

We have a town in Arkansas called Toad Suck! People come from all over to experience the annual Toad Suck Daze.

What a fine looking fellow (or gal) - I mean M. Toad. They probably rank among my favorite critters. Somehow though I don't quite get the connection with the song. (Grin). ATB!

Willin' gets stuck in my head ALL THE TIME... and whenever it does it's a real bugger to get it out. And, of course, there you've just gone and made it happen again!

I instantly knew the song you meant from the title of this post, as the album version of Willin' is on my iPod shuffle list. Loved them when I was in college back when the earth was still cooling and still do. One of my teenage sons has put it on his iPod, amidst the Eminem and death metal, so small victory there. Love your blog, keep with it as long as you are happy doing it.
