Baby, it’s c-c-c-c-cold out there

The county schools were closed today and our private school follows suit when it comes to weather-related closings. From as far back as I can remember, our school has never been closed due to extremely cold conditions. But when it comes to children waiting at bus stops in 2 degree weather with wind chills making it feel like –15, I understood the county’s reasoning.

I headed in around 9:30 just to get some work done in the quiet and turned around after my car began to make this horrible metal-grinding noise that scared me half to death. It sounded like it was coming from the rear brakes and I placed a phone call to the Subaru service center right away (had to leave a message).

By the time I got home, the noise had stopped but I’m still planning on taking it in to have them check it out and have an appointment for later this week. I decided to stay home and get some things done around here. Then I bundled up this afternoon and took my best buddy for a walk around the property.

I also took several photos with my cell phone, all of which I’m sharing here today.

Snapped this one looking through the front storm door.

I was really quite warm in my good jacket. You can wear it alone or with the thick down shell that comes with it. I wore the shell underneath today, that’s for sure!

But my hand sure got cold while I was taking the picture.

When I woke, it was 2 degrees. It appears to have warmed up considerably by 10 AM.

I just started reading this. I bought it for myself for Christmas.

IMG_20140107_020559

I bought a pair of pillow covers too.

They were on a super sale at Pottery Barn.

This was George’s gift from Santa.

It’s a dog yummy jar from Fishs Eddy that I filled with treats for him.

He loves it.

IMG_20140107_020151

I made a nice lunch, then did the dishes.

IMG_20140107_020502

I kept the curtains closed in the living room to keep out the drafts.

IMG_20140107_020641

When it’s a sunny day like it was today, I open the front door to let the sun pour through the storm window. Sometimes I pull the rocking chair there and sit with the sun warming me. Feels so good.

George would like a toy tossed to him now.

Guess that’s my cue to say ta ta for now.

KEEP WARM!

Love the rocking chair in the sun. Reminds me of when I was a young woman living at home and soaking in the warmth of the sun in my bedroom in the daylight basement of our house. Loved the days of snow and the sun shining in the window. Most times I took a nap.....

Must have been car trouble day today. My car is leaking pretty badly ( oil somewhere )..so need to call the mechanic also. when I got it lubed last month, he told me there is minor leaking...but this seems more than minor to me.
Kay in Oregon....we are finally getting some light rain. Yay..

I bought a jar just like George's at Wal-Mart over the holidays... but it was empty and I put people treats in it. xox That's a nice warm looking coat!

Sounds like you had a nice day inspite of the cold weather. I hope there's nothing wrong with your car just the cold was making it sputter.....

Great idea to put the rocking chair in front of the door to catch some sun.....

I loved sharing this day with you and George.

I used to sit in the sun in my West Philly apt dreaming that it was Hawaii.

Now I'm HERE! Visualization WORKS!

COLD here too.....I'm ready for Spring!
I had a Subaru that made a horrible grinding noise ....and it was the Wheel Bearings. I hope you get it worked out!!

You are a better dog mom than I am, since you went outside with George in the cold. Ruby and I played catch inside the house and spent some quality time snuggling on the couch.

Our low this morning set a new record. It was two degrees!

Stay safe and warm. Sending hugs!

Love love love the end of your message~! ta ta for now...That's awesome...
Be careful with those pillow covers.. George might take a liking to them like he did with the ones you got from Kohl"s..that was so funny long time ago when you wrote that story about George.
It's 4 degrees today..We are having a heat wave.. This is the first day it's been above 0.
Hope the kids get to go to school tomorrow.. They have had 2 days off because of the temperatures.
Well, Have a blessed day~! ta ta for now from Iowa:)

This weather is inappropriate. I want spring. But your photos were lovely to look at! I was bundled up too today in three shirts and a sweater over, two pairs of socks, knee-high boots, and my hat, gloves, two scarves and my big winter jacket. With all that prep involved, heck, I'd rather not have to go out at all until April.

My car has had trouble starting these last few frigid days, and I panicked too because I just had a new battery, starter AND radiator put in within the last several months and can NOT afford to have anything else go wrong! But my mechanic assured me that because of the single digit freezing temps it's normal. I'm kind of putting it out of my mind but not entirely because my car IS 13 years old now...

I sat on my bed today in front of the east facing windows pretending the warm sun was shining on a beach. Finally broke above 0 this afternoon in Indiana. Ventured out for awhile but wouldn't dare a selfie in my winter outfit of Steve's camo coat and knit tobaggan. Happy you enjoyed your day. My days have been quiet this week, just what I needed. Hedy

((((((hey)))))) waving wildly :)

I wish I could share such poetic pics from such a day; we went in late to school so I got to work late and then on the way home my car got hit by a city bus: no major damages but some for sure: bumper will have to be replaced; it is going to be a pain to sort our for sure.... sigh.....

so, thanks for some lovely shots to end my day.... always good to end on a smile

As much as we love to stay in and keep cozy, it's always refreshing (and a bit of a shock) to get outside into the elements for the sake of our furry friends! George is precious and I love his Christmas gift, yours, too!

Jane

I too loved your self-portrait--when I saw your scarf over in the outside of one picture, it reminded me to ask you if you're doing any knitting? If you're not reading what looks like a good book, knitting is kinda fun. If you're not ripping out stitches cause you messed up on the pattern, as I seem to do more frequently. I'm knitting David a "camo" scarf, but it's not really giving me the camo look I wanted--it's just done in 2x2 ribbing though, so it will be fast; then I'll do his sis one. Not in camo--although she'd love it, too!
xoxos and ta ta, from Sybil--you sound so velly, velly British!

It's supposed to get downright balmy this weekend in our part of the country... let's hope!

Brrrr. That is Cold!! Some of our city schools were closed on Monday due to the cold. we had single digit temps and when we have kids that walk to school that is just too cold for them. Plus our clothing is not like up north, we don't dress for frigid temps here. Glad to see all is going well and George is keeping you young.

We also had a very loud tap tap tapping noise the other day when it was below zero...finally it disappeared later in the day when it was all warmed up. Lovely spot in the rocking chair with the sun...we have a spot like that too. Ahh the joys of winter! Enjoyed seeing that one of you reflecting in the glass...reminded me of a line from a fav song "when it's cold outside, show the world the warmth of your smile" xoxo

LOVE that jar of treats!! I went to the site to see if they might have one with a German Shepherd but alas they were sold out!! A wonderful idea though!

The sun is the only thing making the cold bearable. That and the fact that the mud in the barnyard is frozen instead of wet. Still hoping for a thaw this weekend though so I can stop hauling hot water out to melt the water buckets in the morning. One benefit of the late delay at the schools is setting up the bucket brigade with the kids ;) Stevie @ ruffledfeathersandspilledmilk.com

Hope it's warmed up by now! It was miserable here for those few days…but it's a balmy 20 degrees now! Love Fishes Eddy…I have to go every time I am in NYC.

Oh my, it really was cold out there, wasn't it? It's already up to 18 here this morning, so that's a heat wave!

I have The Goldfinch in my queue, I keep hearing great things about it, let us know what you thought.

Here's hoping the sun keeps shining!

thotlady said...

I am also reading The Goldfinch. 75% finished. A very interesting book.

Let us know what that grinding noise is...will you? I was out taking photos in the cold the other day, made a uturn, and then...a awful grinding noise for a few miles, and suddenly it disappeared just like that. Good thing I didn't decide to ditch the truck, and walk the 5 miles home in the cold.

Love George's glass jar! Keep warm over there Kate....I fear it's coming our way soon....

Jeanne Walker said...

George just doesn't know what a lucky dog he is...thank goodness his momma has a coat that can withstand the elements! Hope the car is okay...maybe it was telling you it was too dang cold even for it to be out and about. We've warmed up down here in southeast Texas, but our temps were nothing compared to yours. I've go my flip flops on today if that'll tell you anything! Love that you gifted yourself with the book and pillow covers! Stay warm and cuddle with George!

This jumping from sub zero to rather balmy weather is driving me crazy! I would love a nice sunny spot like that to put a rocking chair:) Your home is so charming...as is George:)
