I used to do this meme once a week several years ago. It was called The Simple Woman’s Daybook and although I rarely ever linked to the site, I still enjoyed filling in the blanks. I felt like doing it today.
Outside my window the sun is waning.
I am thinking that being alone is not so bad after all.
I am thankful for just about everything right now.
From the kitchen I can smell the roasted chicken I have in the oven. I’m making {Roasted Herbs de Provence Chicken}, a recipe I found on Pinterest last year.
I am wearing a pair of black jeans, a dark gray v-neck cashmere-blend sweater, a rust-colored scarf from Anthropologie because I like it chilly in here, and a thick pair of socks.
I am creating some pictures to share with you on this post.
I am going to go check on the chicken in a minute. And maybe pour another cocktail. I just said that out loud, didn’t I?
I am reading {The Goldfinch}, by Donna Tartt. I should correct myself and say that I’m STILL reading The Goldfinch. I put it down for a week or so and just picked it up the other day. Really enjoying it. It’s a huge book, too.
I am hoping for another good day tomorrow.
I am hearing {this song} by Aoife O’Donovan on Coffeehouse Rock, channel 848 DirecTV. She reminds me a little of Alison Krauss. I keep a pad of paper and a pen in the living room so that while I have this station on, I can jot down songs I like and then download them and make a CD to listen to in the car. I just realized how old-fashioned this sounds.
Around the house it’s looking pretty cozy.
One of my favorite things is a 3-day weekend. I just remembered that this is one of them. That was a nice surprise.
A few plans for the rest of the week are still in the works. I’ll keep you posted, though.
Here are a few picture thoughts I’m sharing today.
Had a 2-hour delay one morning this week due to thick fog. I couldn’t see 10-feet in front of me at its worst. This is when it began clearing and I headed down the driveway for school. Shot with the cell phone.
You probably can’t tell by this photo but it was snapped this afternoon from my car window with my cell phone. We were having a snow shower. In the sunshine. It was so pretty.
I love getting letters in the mail.
And I love the way the sun comes in the windows at the end of the day.
And birds on the wing.
And a tired pup who has played too much fetch.
Thanks for coming by ~

Hi from another foggy place, Washington.
Give George a pet from me when he's done dreaming.
Lovely post and photos . It is a snowy cold day out here but the wood stove is going and we are all cozy . George and Miggs would be a great pair as Miggs sleeps on her couch the same way . Thanks for sharing and have a good week !
Oh Kate,
I do hope a bit of that sun finds its way up to Rhode Island. Today it was a teeming rain here!!!
I loved the Q&A's.... I might do that weekly for myself!

Hi Kate:
I thoroughly enjoyed this post, pictures and all. I received the Donna Tartt book for Christmas and am looking forward to tackling it. Our daughter-in-law always chooses the neatest books for me!
Have a wonderful new week, my friend.
Later...
xo

Entirely lovely, and so well put together!

What a lovely day you had. Hope tomorrow is even better. How was the chicken? George looks content!
We had a pretty good day here. We went to a funereal of a dear friend. It was an African-American friend and that culture seems to do it up right. Among the tears there was lots of praise and encouragement. I left feeling uplifted.
Later in the afternoon, we went and played detective and my 6 year old spied on people and made notes about potentially suspicious behavior. Tomorrow we visit Christine, the head of the good fairies. :-)
Thanks for letting me drop by! Enjoyed the post and the pictures as always!
Letters in the mail seem to be a lost art these days. How lovely that you received one! Lovely post and photos. Enjoy your three day weekend. I have one too!
Beautiful; I loved it all!
It's good to hear you sounding so positive.
Life is hard sometimes, but worth it anyway.
I know you know that.
What an uplifting post...Thank you for sharing some of your life with us as it makes us feel closer to you.....I love these shots you shared...
Such a real and lovely post. I hope you have a wonderful weekend! Xo
I didn't know BC's could get too much Fetch, LOL!
I keep a pad & paper in the living room for the same reason you do.
You sound good Kate. I'm glad.
I'm reading (and enjoying) Goldfinch, too. This is one of those books I am glad I have on my Kindle because I am less daunted by the 700 pages. I know I am 30% into it, but don't have to see the 500 pages left to go!!
I'm so happy all seems well with you at this moment in time. May it stretch to many more moments..... Hugs! deb
What a lovely, positive blog today - keep it up. x
getting letters in the mail really make my day.
getting letters in the mail really make my day.
Very pretty Kate!! Hoping your 3 day weekend is wonderful!
Your life seems to have taken on a serene, contented quality that's enviable. I love getting letters in the mail, too and have revived that lost art recently with a few friends. It's like receiving an unexpected gift, isn't it? George is a sweetheart.

A Glowing Ember
It was joyful to read your post today. Your journey to a contented life is underway...although there probably will be bumps and potholes along the path...but hopefully as time passes and you go further down the road, they will be fewer and fewer. Hope that chicken was delish and love the photos...especially of the flowers! George seems to be settling down too! Enjoy your extended weekend and looking foward to hearing about your upcoming plans! xo PS: I wish we would go back to letter writing and to phone calls!
Dreamy, peaceful post---loving the small things.
Nice choice of photos--I have been procrastinating the choice of a better camera, but am often just satisfied with the camera on the phone--and I always have it with me--missed a good one this morning tho of a pileated woodpecker--phone just couldn't do the zoom.
MLK holiday was one of my favorites when I taught--a real gift--nothing special expected of me at home.
I love daily diaries, it helps us realize and cherish the in between moments of our day. Sounds like yours have been pleasant lately. Flowers, dogs, long weekends, a cozy home...all sounds very good. Enjoy yourself!
I'm thankful that the flu has finally left and I can finally catch up with all the people who I love to visit. xo
Yeah for cozy afternoons and three day weekends

If you like Aoife O'Donovan, you should check out her work with Chris Thile on NPR's Tiny Desk. Great talents, both of them. You can find it on youtube.
Beautiful Photos! Love <3
i love this post...the meme...the filling in of the blanks....it's just so soothing for some reason.
and i love george and your fog :)
xo
ps....3 days weekends deserve an applause.
I always enjoyed reading responses to this meme but never did it myself. Love this peek at what you are doing and feeling on one particular day:)
I do hope to get around to reading the Goldfinch soon! It sounds like something I would love.
Have a wonderful extra day off tomorrow!
that's such a GREAT meme! I like letters too, but I hear that you have to send them to get them, sort of like Christmas cards. I don't know if there is any truth in that or not.
I am in love with that first shot... the foggy shot. xox
i used to like when you did that MEME .. the photos are lovely .. snow doesn't photograph well as its falling unless you shoot on slo-mo .. is there a setting or app for that .. xo
I used to do that meme all the time, too. (I never linked to it either).
Kristin
I started The Goldfinch... I don't want to put it down, but of course, I have to, it is far too long to read straight through. I have a feeling it will be one worth savoring anyway.
My dog sleeps just like that on our couch, sometimes with his head on the pillow. Our dogs have it made!
One sweet looking tired pup!
Lovely, as always.
I have missed so many posts, but happy to enjoy them in one swoop tonight. I admire your little habit of writing down songs you enjoy and yes getting hand written letters in the mail is a treat that we rarely enjoy these days! xo
