Dramatic skies

As I write this, it’s dreary and raining and quite cold. I actually broke down and turned the heat on just to take the chill off. I also stopped on the way home from work and bought some soup and a small loaf of homemade bread. In January, I gave up eating sugar but am finding it much more difficult to give up bread. Sugar I am living without fine, but bread . . . oh so difficult.

Exactly one week ago today, I walked outside to do something (I don’t remember what) and turned around and ran back inside to get the camera. I grabbed it fast, only having time to make sure the memory card was in it. I had my 50 mm lens and didn’t have time to change it out for anything else. I tried to capture the massive line of dark clouds that was moving in at a fast clip.

The height of these trees is massive, so that should give you some idea of the size of the cloud front.

It’s beautiful, really.

This is the kind of stuff that, had my husband seen this, he would have come running to find me – to show me something we wouldn’t see every day, you know?

Something cool.

It got darker.

And then too dark to keep shooting.

I shot all of these with the Nikon 50 mm lens, using Manual mode and forgetting what settings other than having the ISO set anywhere from 1000 to 3200.

Oh, Kate! Mother Nature and the clouds are amazing. Beautiful memories. I bet you had a smile on your face. I had one on mine.

Very dramatic clouds. Mother Nature is really quite amazing.

It's cold and dreary and rainy here too. Unfortunately.

Very dramatic clouds, as you say!

I have found that, when giving up wheat and wheat products, some extra sugar is given up as well. I send good wishes to you as you give up sugar.

Hugs,
Nellie

Woo woo! Look at you and all these posts in a week :-)
Love them, of course. Love that the presence of your husband is felt in the beautiful things of nature.

Kate, those clouds are so beautiful, so powerful. My husband was a cloud watcher, too, and would come running for me to step outside to see them. I am in Australia visiting our daughter and will post some dramatic storm clouds from here the next time it rains. They live under a mountain range and the sky is amazing. Hedy

Excellent! Growing up in Oklahoma and being used to keeping an eye on the sky to know when big storms are near, I have always enjoyed cloud patterns.

That is dramatic - and your words touching.

I too have quit sugar AGAIN (fruit is OK, and I dilute 100% fruit juices a LOT)

Good bread? I refuse to live without it! I like sprouted Ezekial Bread and such.....

Brilliant skies Kate - did it rain very hard as a result?

Great pictures. We had those scary skies here in MS. Lots of damage on Monday. Many folks lives changed forever.

awesome shots of a threatening sky …

did you know carbs (bread) turn to sugar when digested?

Wow, those are awesome clouds. They belong in a mid-century painting. I'm looking forward to enjoying a few summer storms again this year - no tornadoes though, please.

*love* these images, I love a storm, the atmosphere it creates, the swirling skies... as long as no one is hurt, lol.

Remarkable images Kate. I'm always amazed how dramatic clouds and images of them can be, sans what we think of as 'color' or texture. And one does have to quick lol to capture some of the beauties that appear and disappear in a matter of moments!

I share your pain over (or love of?) of bread. It is something I have simply had to admit I can not give up. Portion out mindfully, yes. Control how frequently, yes. Walk away from entirely? Not so much lol

I love watching the clouds and photographing them too. My son thinks I'm mad until I show him the pictures. Every little thing brings back memories doesn't it? xx

I love pictures of clouds. It's cold here also. It's been in the 80's for a few days, but now it's low 60's with a really cold wind. Went from shorts and flip flops to jeans and a sweater.

Kate, these photos are awesome. What an amazing sky.

Now for the "bad" news....bread, especially white, is nothing more than sugar once it's digested. :-(

I always loved it when your husband came looking for you to show you something like the sunset, or the moon, or a feather, or a new bird--you know--all that fun stuff. I don't know if he thought of himself as a romantic or not--but I really do think he was! Only YOU really know, I guess! ) Oh, my husband points out things, like dove flying--because it will be dove season soon, and sunsets--because he loves them, too, or the same-looking 485,798th mountain peak up in the Alleghenies as we ride up to our son's house. All the while, he's slowly (could be quicker someday!) getting us killed 'cause he's not watching, say, the ROAD! sorry,,must use inside voice when I think about it.

Stunning! I especially love the third one down...so dramatic!

I would have a hard time giving up bread too....in fact I think it would be almost as hard as giving up wine!

Love those dramatic clouds - especially when we feel sure of our roof and gates and all things loose and wobbly! I expect there will be some storms when I am in the UK soon. So nice that you share these moments here
