This past Tuesday marked the 1-year anniversary of my husband’s death. I started thinking about it a couple of months ago and decided to get out of town and away for a few days. I was going back and forth as to where to go when out of the blue, my friend Sherrie called.
Sherrie’s husband, Warren, was our best and dearest friend. He died in March of last year and my husband followed him in September. I couldn’t think of a better person to spend some time with and after I hung up from her, I went online and booked a ticket. This was a huge deal for me because I can count the number of times I have flown on one hand. And I hadn’t been on a plane since 2006. I am not a flyer.
My flight left on Saturday at 6:15 in the morning from Philadelphia. There’s Center City as the sky begins to lighten.
I thought the views from the windows were incredible and spent much of the time looking at the passing sights.
Above the clouds now, at around 30,000 feet and watching the sun come up.
I realized on this flight that I had never flown with my husband. He preferred driving and when we visited our friends, Warren & Sherrie (usually about once a year), we would drive. It was a looooong way to go, but always interesting.
The clouds from above are just so incredible.
My visit was just what I needed, and for me, the highlight of the trip was watching an old movie we had all made while on vacation in Cape Hatteras in October of 1990. We were so young and our children ranged from toddlers to age 9. And I sat on Sherrie’s couch with her eldest daughter and we laughed and cried as we watched our husbands, our children, and ourselves in our youth. It was perfect.
Flying back into Philadelphia at sunset, after a good time spent away.
I always think that I’ll try to post more often. But I do what I can. Until next time, then ~

I enjoyed this flight very much. You don't know this, but you are my guide. My husband is more than a decade older than me, and I am coming to terms with being as old as I am. You have lived my greatest fear and survived! Thank you for being such a believable and relateable role-model. . . and friend-soul.

Such beautiful photos! I'm happy that you had a wonderful visit.
Those pictures in the clouds are wonderful. I love to fly, but the airport hassles and the crowded seats are a bit much now.
so glad you not only got to get away but also that you got to get away with a friend and someone that relates with you. I am sure you all had a wonderful time. I hope you both found refreshment with each other's company
It sounds like your friend Sherrie knew by experience, just a few months earlier, that you would need to spend that first anniversary like this. You're lucky to have one another.
What a lovely way to spend a sad but special time. It sounds like you cultivated good friendships in your marriage - now a comfort and a blessing.
Beautiful shots of the sky. I can't believe it's been a year since your loss Kate. I think of you often. I have a friend whose husband died around the same time and we regularly walk the moors together which she finds so therapeutic. Very large hugs to you over the Atlantic. x
So glad you had a nice time!!!
Fantastic photos Kate ! I am so glad you two got together and had a good visit ! . Thanks for sharing , Have a good weekend !
I am so glad you got away. Every day is a new start, and sometimes that is just what we need.
The first anniversary is so hard. I'm still so sorry for your loss Kate. It sounds like you have a great friend who can help support you and in turn you can support her.
Your photos from the plane are beautiful and I'm glad you tried something (mostly) new and enjoyed the experience. Sending many warm thoughts your way...
It can be so beautiful flying at sunrise or sunset! Sounds like just want you needed.
Kate, thanks for sharing your life with us. Big hugs to you!
So happy you were able to be with someone who knows how you feel. Sending you hugs.
Glad you has a good friend to visit.
Blessings to you.
Kate - I always love looking at your pictures and hearing your insight. You are a blessed soul. A quick story for you. My father passed away about 1-1/2 years ago after a long illness. I have, for the last 5 years of his life and now since his death, helped take care of my parents house and yard. About a year before he died, my dad planted morning glories and moon flowers, but they never came up. This year, out of the blue, both morning glories and moon flowers appeared in his garden and flourished. My mom and I just stand there and look in absolute wonder -- how it can be that 3 years later there are morning glories and moon flowers growing and blooming. Take good care of yourself. You're a beautiful soul.

I'm so glad you have such a wonderful friend to share everything with... the good as well as the challenges. It makes all the difference.
yeah!!!!!!!!! xo
I'm so glad you went and had a good time!!! Those "firsts" are always hard, but now it's behind you. Grab every chance you can to have good times!!
I'm so glad that you were able to get away, Kate, and what gorgeous views you had on the flight.
Have a wonderful weekend!
I had no idea it had been that long since your husband passed away. I'm so glad you are finding peace and adventure with old friends. Wonderful photos, Kate <3
Cheers to adventure!
It is hard to believe that a year has gone by already...
Your friend's call at the right moment is serendipity at its best! Sharing those memories together must have been healing to you both.
xoxo
Your pictures are always amazing. Blog when you feel the spirit and that will be just right.
It is fun to fly, but more fun to spend time with such dear friends. Glad it was a good transition.
peace
Well, I thought I wrote on here, but it doesn't show. Just wanted to tell you I am happy you got away and to be with your friend. The pics are awesome. Wish you could have come here. Picture perfect weather all summer, 23rd warmest on record too. Enjoy the autumn, my favorite season. Thinking of you. HOpe this goes thru this time . Kay in Oregon
What a special trip to have with your friend, each grieving your husbands deaths. I loved thinking about you sitting and watching the 1990 movie . . . laughter and tears!
I try to do something special for my self on the day of our wedding anniversary. It is a day no one else remembers, but I always do. I have done things like take a walk on the beach, go to an estate sale, go visit family members, get out photo albums and wrap myself in memories.
Thinking of you . . . and caring.
One more thing . . . I loved your flight photos . . .
beautiful clouds . . .
I have never flown so these images fascinate me! Beautiful!
How does the song go? "Let's get together, ya ya ya, we can have a lot of fun." So glad you two ladies were there for one another and those movies sound so nostalgic and fun to watch. xox
what a wonderful gift you gave yourself and what new memories you just created!
your strength and love of life continues to amaze me and inspire me!!!
xoxo
I am so glad you had each other to go through this time.
I'm always amazed how you can share such personal glimpses into your world. Thank you...such an excellent reminder to savor each day with each loved one.
I wish I could give you a hug. Our guys are gone physically, but seem to be present spiritually wherever we go. At least I have found that to be true. Hope you have those sensations too. Thinking of you. Linda
It sounds like the perfect way to commemorate such difficult events as these.
Blessings,

What a beautiful time to reflect. Friends are such great people to have around, especially when you need them the most.
More great shots! It's a good chance that I'll never see those clouds personally, because hubby won't fly!
I am so glad you went to see your friend, who has the same name as my daughter! I know she picked you up so much--I know mine always did!
I owe you a return e-note, since you're always so sweet to write me when I comment, even if you don't have time!! Oh--we still have our cat, :(, and that is one thing we last wrote to one another about! Believe me--I did understand you and I hope my absence of a reply didn't throw you off, and make you wonder. I understood your reasoning absolutely! And agreed totally.
I just have felt really lousy and haven't been good at e-mailing or doing much at all for the past couple of weeks. I always look forward to your posts and to our little conversations by e-mail.
(I hope this comment hasn't completely confused you,Kate, but when I sign this--I think you'll "get it"!
Hugs!

Blogger won't even let me delete! WOW!
I love reading blogs. But like you, I not always good about posting. Sometimes I post three or four times a week and other weeks not so much. I am on the computer so much with my on line store, that sometimes I just stay away for a day or two. I love reading your blog. Always interesting.
nice !
Hi Kate, these photos are amazing. How do you manage to take such great photos out of those airplane windows? I can never get anything decent. Sounds like you had a lovely time. I wish I had a George to greet me when I come home. I can't have a dog as I live in an apartment building. I think it's time for a new kitty though. It's been 10 months now since I said goodbye to my Felix. I can't believe you have never been to a professional baseball game. That is too funny. You are just full of adventures lately. Wonderful to hear. Have fun.
