Time for something new

A couple of months ago, a blogging friend, Marit published an instructional post regarding using Windows Live Writer rather than Blogger. I tried to accomplish all that she was saying, but between the silly translation of her page, and my own clumsiness, it just didn't work for me. But now it's a new year and I'm game, so here's my first attempt using Windows Live Writer.

I begin to get rather antsy around this time every year.

I'm almost to the point where I can't wait to get all the holiday decorations put away and the house back to normal.

So while they're still out and cheering me, I'd like to share some of my holiday accoutrements before they go away.

This is an Eldreth Pottery limited edition Santa, 2002 or 2003 and was given to me by a friend as a birthday gift.

DSC_0077 copy2One of my favorite glass votive candle holders sits on the end of the mantel in the dining room. I love how it looks when it's lit. I bought from an interior designer on Ocracoke Island, NC. I love the band around the top.

Holiday goings-on are beginning to settle down a bit. Not that they were in any way hectic for us this year. It's been fairly quiet and right now, quiet is fine with me after the autumn that we've had.

DSC_0080 copy2I love votive holders. They are so easy to incorporate into your holiday decorations.

This is a mercury glass votive that I bought on sale at Macy's this year. It's quite large for a votive holder.

At its base is a glass cranberry wreath.

The holidays just glow, don't they?

This was something I made on Tabblo. It's a little photo cube. I did a couple this year with winter scenes. Not a good photo, but my flash was involved so I'll blame it on that.

Thanks to all the visitors and friends I've met this past year. If you're sitting there reading this right now and you've been thinking about starting your own blog, then I'd like to encourage you to JUST DO IT. Try it! If you don't like it, delete it.

DSC_0011 copy2 And if bloggers who have been reading have any advice to a newbie who's just starting out, please leave a comment to that effect.

You know who you are. You're a person who really wants to write or to share their photography, or maybe you just want to connect with people. When I started out, I googled the words "how do I start a blog?" And up came a wealth of information.

I'm still fairly inept at all the technical stuff, but I can load photos and manipulate my header and sidebars and believe me, if I can do it, then you can.

And look. I think I'm actually learning Windows Live Writer.

And that's all I have to say about that.

Except for this: I've been back and forth in and out of this post using WLW and I'm not quite sure about it yet. I don't yet know how to auto post. And I'm wondering what happens in Blogger if I should go into a post that way rather than this way. All hell could break lose! So I'll keep you posted.

One thing I have noticed is that if you open this blog up in Mozilla Firefox, the post looks all over the place. But open it up in Windows Explorer and everything is where it should be. Sigh.

Amen and Until tomorrow, my friends . . .

Thanks for all the info on blogging, something I have been thinking about doing for a while now. I am just so afraid that no one will find me interesting enough to post a comment.
And that's all I have to say about that....Forest Gump...right.LOL
Your pictures are beautiful.

Hey, thanks all. And Betsy, it used to be a banner day for me if I had more than 2 comments. I was doing the blog only as sort of a newsletter to my sisters in the beginning. And then I left some comments on the blogs of others and then somehow, surprisingly, people began to find me.

I love your mantel shots...they make me feel very comfortable. Accomplishing that homey feeling takes a special nack. You have it!
You Christmas box is finished...I plan on mailing it tomorrow!

I love your holiday photos. I took some this year but with my internet problems during our snow storms this year I just never got around the posting them. Maybe I'll do a "Christmas in July" theme this summer when I am roasting hot and miss the wintery weather.....

Thank you for the encouragment on creating a blog. Yours was one I followed quietly for some time before actually starting my own up. Although it has only been a few short months for me, I am throughly enjoying the whole experience! Thank you!

I love learning new things, and seem to always dig into something new in January!

Anyone out there reading Kate's post...who is thinking about starting a blog...do it. We'll come by and read you and comment. Share your thoughts or your photos. Come on, you know you want to!

Lovely post, and it looks fine to me in Firefox. That's a great photo of George and the cat in the sidebar - I'm sure there's a story there ;)

It looks good to me...but what do I know?

I have no idea what Windows Live Writer is, I will have to check it out. I just got blogger mastered, not sure I want to try something new, LOL!
I love the mantel shots, especially the one you used in your header! So lovely, the warm glow. Your camera takes such nice shots! Happy, happy new year to you and yours!

Well it does go all over the place for me as I am using Firefox. I am on a Mac so I won't be trying the Windows Live. Hope it works out for you with some practice.

First, beautiful photography. And your votive holders are so beautiful and do not seem to be for just one season, they also look like you could leave them out all year.

I agree with you about people thinking of blogging. I thought about it for quite awhile, but was scared...then I asked myself, scared of what? It really, really is easy and if I can do it anyone can. And as you said, it is so easy to delete, takes mere seconds. So just do it already!

I also tried to access this post via my google reader and this post would not turn up, so I went to your blog name and got right here. The Windows Live Writer does not show up on my google reader, and yes, I have Mozilla Firefox and your post does appear a bit all over but still looks great.

Thanks for the encouragement and inspiration.

Happy New Year, Kate. I've been lagging behind in blog reads this season. I have read all of your recent posts (just now) and they're wonderful as always. Good luck with Windows Live. I just type my posts out in a text application and paste it into Blogger, then add my pics from Photobucket. That works best for me.

What a gorgeous blog! Love the photos.

Ooo, your votives are so pretty, and they make beautiful photos! I'm almost ready for the decorations to come down, too...

Don't have Windows, so I guess LW's not for me. Love my Mac. I'm heading over to investigate Tabblo now. Have a wonderful day!

Yep - not looking like I think you want it to in Firefox which is a browser you have to recon with, given how many people use. Not a surprise that an MS product doesn't play nicely with a competitor's browser though.

I'm working on getting my blog moved to my own domain and switching to WordPress. My head is going to explode.

To beginning bloggers - just start one. You might find all kinds of advice about having a clear mission or purpose and figuring out your target audience and all that. But I don't think that is all necessary for a personal blog. Just jump in there and see where it takes you.

THIS is beautiful.
Also, buying quality reflects here in the special things that you have. Each item looks valuable, well beyond it's dollar amount.

I am reading it on Firefox and its almost perfectly laid out .. small glitch neat a link you put in ... otherwise very nicely done.

A friend who uses WLE says sometimes its as frustrating as Blogger ... or WordPress .. I think all website have issues in one way or another.

And all you need to do is c/p into the Compose thingie and then go to the post options where there's a drop down menu so you can change the time/date of posting .. easy ..

I just began blogging, been a reader for a year/ha.
How do you make your pictures so large? I love them. When I save pic from web and choose large while blogging, it comes out about 2 or 3" in size.

Kate, your photos look just beautiful.... I saw a mercury glass votive like yours in a light aqua blue, had it in my hand and put it back on the shelf...because I was suppose to be shopping for others and not me! I could kick myself! Oh, well.

ps Why use Windows live...what can you do extra? My computer literacy is limited..so I know nothing about Windows live. Thanks

Hi, all. In answer to "Why use Live Writer", I find it so much easier to use than Blogger. I can move the pictures where I want them, rearrange the type where I want it and I don't have to enter HTML codes.
When I want to do lines of empty space, I have to go into HTML mode and add the
codes, however if you come out and then go into compose mode, all your line break codes disappear. At least, on mine it does. Maybe it's my layout style.
I've heard people saying that Firefox messes up the post and some say it doesn't. I'm going to continue with Windows Live Writer for a little while to see what I think.
For instructions on how to make the photos large, I followed Marit's instructions. Remember, this is a translated link. She lives in Norway.

What lovely, glowing photos!

I've never heard of Windows Live Writer either, and am wondering what the advantages are, too.

To potential bloggers.....just jump in, for goodness sake....write what YOU want.....post photos that YOU like. I blogged for a year without getting ANY comments.....my own fault, really, as I was not getting out and mingling in the blogworld.

Since finding Kate/Country Girl's blog I have admired her encouraging attitude toward other bloggers. Follow Kate's lead, everyone.

Cool.....you were explaining Windows Live Writer as I was writing my comment!!

Lovely decorations! I'm going to start taking mine down today, but will get my snowmen out! Thanks for the encouragment on blogging!

Kate, try saving the post while still in html mode and then take it to compose mode. I often find that my pasted items scrunch up like that if it auto-saves while in Compose mode first. If it gets to it before you do, just delete and paste again, but get it saved in html. See if that helps.

I'm in Firefox and it looks pretty good to me! And yes, I'd give the suggestion to others starting a blog to leave comments at blogs in order to get people coming and commenting on theirs and that's how it snowballs.
