The fog comes on little cat feet

I am trying not to get too down about this, but according to the computer specialist, it’s really not looking good for the recovery of the photos stored on my external hard drive. For those who don’t know, the drive crashed last week and I am facing the possibility having to make a decision regarding the recovery of my images. I will either have to spend a lot of money, or call it a day and chalk it all up to a learning experience.

Every single photo that I have taken since 2007 was on that EHD. I have several hundred stored on two online places (Shutterfly and Mpix) but other than this, nothing. I can’t imagine never seeing these images again, but I guess this is what happens to people who have boxes of photos and albums and lose them in floods or fires.

It is what it is. And like I said, I’m only facing this possibility. But it really doesn’t look good.

This may look dreary to you, but I think that the fog and the mist through the bare branches of trees is absolutely beautiful. This was my view one morning this week when I left for work. I had the camera with me because I was taking it to school to get the monthly photos of students that I always take, and conveniently captured these memories.

I don’t want to think about all of my images. I can live without them, sure. But it could be five years worth of memories down the drain.

I’ll stop now.

: : :

I love how different the driveway always looks. Our driveway is partially wooded, and a third of a mile long with a gradual incline to the top. It’s really quite beautiful.

Plans for the weekend include cleaning, then decorating for the holidays. The Faculty Christmas Party is Saturday night and only a couple of minutes from my house this year. My friends, Christine and John, are hosting this year and they live in the development through the woods. They’re a fun family and have insisted that this year will be a blue jean casual affair. I can’t believe how happy everyone is about this. No, wait a minute. Yes I can! Fun.

Hope you all have a great weekend. And keep your fingers crossed for the recovery of my beloved photos, willya?

i've been wondering about your hard drive. i store all of my photos on one as well, and except for my blog photos stored on Picasa, i don't use any other on-line storage places. are you going to start doing a back-up to an on-line resource now? just curious.

and i do hope it's not over yet!

I lost a lot of my photos, trips with my late husband to Europe, photos of all my foals growing up, and many many more. I still grieve those lost photos. I sent the drive to a VERY expensive firm who quoted me $3500 for their retrieval efforts. They told me that their initial evaluation looked pretty hopeless. So I didn't take it any further. You have to make that decision and just be prepared to live with it. I hope it turns out good for you. If not, you can join my club:-(

I'm expecting only good things with your missing photos. You must have some that you've posted on your blog, no? Those wouldn't be lost forever.

I absolutely LOVE(!!) that photo of your driveway. Spectacular!

Kate, these are such beautiful images...I especially love the last one. You really have a gift with your photography.

I'm so sorry about your EHD...that really is heartbreaking. I know I'd be quite devastated if it happened to me. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a technical miracle for you!

love the beauty, serenity, and mystery of those fog shots. My fave is the one of the driveway.

Yes, you can live without the shots and there are worse things in life..... but it would make me sick to my stomach to think of losing all those shots if they were mine. I don't think it is ridiculous to be sad or have a sinking feeling.... soooo.... I am throwing up some prayers that way that they can be recovered!

I love the fog, and your photos. We haven't had any rain in December so far (very unusual; December is our 2nd-wettest month) but lots of fog and grey days. Depresses some people, but not me.

Crossing fingers for your photos....

You can take screen shots of the ones you have posted on your blog and then crop them. It's a lot of work, but it would be one way of getting a few back. :-(

'The fog moves on little cat feet', in much the same way your photos might have disappeared. Hopefully and perhaps once the fog has lifted they may return to you. I hope so and if not they will only be available in your memory.

Love your photos as I always do but today what got me was your choice of poems.

About a year after my mom passed away I was reading through a poetry book in my room. As I worked through the book I found two pages the had post-it notes on them, one by Robert Frost and the other was this one by Carl Sandburg. The post-it simply said "This is one of mom's favorites". That's all. But just to learn something new about her when I thought I never would be able to again meant so much to me...

So thank you Kate, for sharing and for reminding me the memories I'm grateful for.

LOVE the fog on your driveway -- just stunning in a soft, tranquil way. "ICK" about losing the photos. I am still holding out hope that you will somehow find a way to retrieve them:)

Oh, I'm so hoping they can salvage it. I can't imagine loosing all mine but as you said, many have lost such in fires (my childhood home burned down) and floods. I have several back-ups and considering the "icloud" ... maybe Mr. Jobs will watch over it carefully there!
I'm like Beth, a whore for fog photos! Yours ares so beautiful and that last lane shot ... OMG!!!

...Btw, thank you so much for the sweet email you sent the other day. It didn't go to my head. It went straight to my heart tho'. Thanks for that. :o)

...You know since your brought up about the storage of digital photos, what is the proper way to store and save them? I wanna be sure that I'm doing this right. Any advice?

...The party sounds like fun and do have some, 'kay? Actually, have a LOT. *giggle* ;o)

...Blessings :o)

Prayers for your pictures. I wish I knew how to recover them for you and would do it free in a heartbeat. "fog whore & blue jean whore parties" ...gotta love it!!

We have just both had to retire unexpectedly and we plan on trying to buy a "nice" camera now that we have time....so this will be a lesson for us if/when we ever really do start taking "real" pics. I took one web design class and built our schools website ....using a program BUT did not have manual, etc, ZERO help, ZERO... and didn't realize that there were templates, etc. It was kinda always in the back of my mind...what if my backup fails?? Closing with a prayer for your pics!!

I'm doing the ancient Photo Salvage Dance for you, Kate, even as I type. One day a long time ago I lost an email that my son had written to me telling me all about this wonderful woman he had recently met (who later became his wife and our dear daughter-in-law.) I still cannot bring myself to throw out the primitive computer in which it once resided--I think a part of me expects that email to crawl out of it one day and hop on my desk to surprise me. A techie friend told me the other day I should get a backup drive to back up my backup drive. I'm going with the idea you will get your photos back. Concentrating on that thought very very hard. xo

Caroline said...

Oh shit. Sorry to hear this. I too lost a bunch of photos...so I get it. That just sucks. But you will take more photos and yes, this is a learning experience. Which reminds me...I am going to back up my photos right now!!!

P.S. I love that last photo...I mean I LOVE it!!!

I'll cross my fingers, my toes, my legs, arms and even my eyes that you recover something, anything from your external. Dear Santa, please let Kate have her photos back.

I have to tell you...that last image took my breath away.

Feeling for you. Hope the photos are retrieved without too much more drama. I would cry buckets if that happened. Love your shots of the fog and that poem gave me a little thrill. It was always a favourite of mine as a child.

I don't think you asked for opinions .. hee hee .. so, I am giving you mine, anyway. Try to get your pix recovered, it may not work, but then again .. it MIGHT, and isn't it worth at least a TRY? If you don't TRY, it will gnaw away at you .. love that word .. gnaw ..

Oh, Cate, I am so sorry about your hard drive!
I have been in your shoes, and ever since the disaster struck, I am making sure to have my pictures on three different hard drives. I hope you can recuperate the files, it will cost you, but it may well be worth it your peace of mind.
Hugs,

Kate,
I had the same problem and am afraid of hearing that the photos cannot be recovered. They were all taken before my husband died this past August, and I will be heartbroken if I cannot recover them.
I would love to know where you are looking into the process. At this point I'm not sure I care how much it will cost. I just want these pictures of Kenny.

Country Girl said...

Cheryl, So sorry to hear about Kenny. This is the company I've been talking with for the possible recovery. They come recommended by Maxtor (the maker of my EHD) and have had good reviews, decent rates. The quote they gave me is doable.

Such gorgeous fog photos---they are breathtaking! I've been pondering the photo back up thing too. Mine are on an EHD and my son keeps telling me I need to back up the back up---but with WHAT?? WHERE?? Suggestions?

any photo you've posted on the blog(s) is downloadable .. same for the stuff you have on Flickr or Picasa .. I suggest that you download all of them onto a Data CD for safer keeping ... xoxo

Can I admit now that my external hard drive, on which I had all my American trip photos, is still with some company in New Zealand that recover for just $800. Except mine, which were unrecoverable... luckily I am a dork and accidentally saved most (I think) onto my laptop. Perhaps your internal dork has done something similar and you have just forgotten...

Food for thought. Or just confusing!

Hugs anyway.

:( that stinks. As I told you, the same thing happened to me and they told me it would be well in excess of $1000 to retrieve everything. There went a couple 1000 photos. It took a while to get over that.

abb said...

Oops - forgot to add that your last photo just blows me away! So beautiful.

Mary said...

Oh Kate, I'm so sorry about your photos. I back up to an external hard drive, too... but now I'm thinking that I need a back-up for my back-up...

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your fog photos -- you now how much I love a good fog. I posted one today. :)

I am sure praying for good news, but all is not lost if you can download the photos from the blog!

I was scrolling down enjoying the misty, foggy photos, and then 'it' appeared...that last photo is awesome.

Put all of your cares and concerns on the back burner, and go have yourself a merry little time at the party this weekend! Have one for me!

Happy Decorating! Hugs, JW

Damn and blast the external hard drive to hell and back. What a bummer. If it's do-able then give recovery a whirl. However if that doesn't work - here comes the Pollyanna bit - worse things have happened at sea Fluffy Kate. You said it when you mentioned fire and floods.

Now quickly moving on for fear of aggravating an already tense situation; fog and trees and the poem. WOW!! Where do you find such appropriate verse or is your name secretly Carl Sandburg?

Good luck
Ms Soup

Kate, that news doesn't sound good.:-( I am very much a camera novice, having a very simple, inexpensive "aim and shoot" model, but I certainly don't want to lose any of the photographs I have entered into this computer. I am crossing my fingers, arms, legs, and whatever else can be crossed for promising results on your pictures.

I hope you can some how recover those images! If I were you I'd figure out someway, somehow to do it, even if it cost a lot of money!

They say that possessions are only things, but in my mind our photos are extensions of us, our creativity, our love of capturing the moment, and our emotions. Worth every penny to save them, go for it.

It's your work, your effort for these last few years, and I have seen what you can produce. It's amazing.

I love, love, love these foggy shots! Between these and Mary's fog shots I am in awe!!

All my fingers and toes are crossed for the safe return of your photos Kate! Through your misfortune I have learned a lesson as all my backup is on one external hard drive too. I have heard we should have two of them as well as one on line...I just am not organized enough to keep up with it all! Please check your Picasa web album that you must have via Blogger...all the photos from your blog should be accessible through it!
