A quiet skin

It’s quiet here tonight.

I grew up in a house full of noise. I was the eldest of seven children, and we were fairly close in age. There was always something going on at our house, or rather I should say houses, as we moved frequently when I was a child. Dinnertime was always full of conversations and one of our favorite games to play was one that we called, “The Sound of People Who Like to Eat”.

In this game, we sat up straighter, quieted our voices, became proper ladies and gentlemen, and enjoyed our meal in this manner for up to almost two minutes, or until one of my brothers would always end up breaking the spell. Truth be told, I sort of liked our boisterous dinners. They were so full of life and laughter.

I started dating my husband when I was 19 and the one single thing that I noticed at his house (besides the fact that it was much cleaner than mine) was the quiet.

It was blissfully quiet.

And I’ve come to realize over the years that this is how my home is now.

It sort of makes me want to shake things up a bit, you know?

But really, I get enough noise at work. So this is nice.

The geraniums continue to bloom in their spot in the dining room window. They’ve been here through the winter and I think they’re getting excited to be outside once again.

Soon, my pretty plants.

Just after dinner, I realized that I had taken no photos for today’s post, so I put the macro lens on the camera and took several shots in the dining room.

It had the best light.

I love lace curtains.

And these came with the house.

Does anyone remember the catalog, Rue de France? Wow – I loved their lace curtains. The catalog doesn’t exist anymore, but you can get some beautiful lace curtains at Country Curtains (of all places). I found this out recently when I was looking for window treatments for the master bedroom.

Miss Blackie wants out.

No, wait. Let me rephrase that.

Miss Blackie was meowing to go out. So I went to the door to open it for her, and she ran away.

This is her favorite game.

Either it’s a game or she’s going batty.

As I write this, George is asleep on the floor next to me. He’s having a little dream and he’s making noises and Miss Blackie is sitting near him and giving him odd looks.

If you’re new here, I just want you to know that this is about as exciting as it gets around these parts. And I like it just fine that way. I hope you do, too.

I’m still reading over your comments from my previous post. I love those Q&A ones, don’t you? I really enjoy getting to know you better.

Hope your week is going well. Until tomorrow, my friends . . .

A quiet skin

BY LAURIE SHECK

Thinking has a quiet skin. But I feel the break and fled of things inside it.
Blue hills most gentle in calm light, then stretches of assail
And ransack. Such tangles of charred wreckage, shrapnel-bits
Singling and singeing where they fall. I feel the stumbling gait of what I am,
The quiet uproar of undone, how to be hidden is a tempting, violent thing—
Each thought breaking always in another.
All the unlawful elsewheres rushing in.

i like our quiet house that gets shaken up just often enough when the kids stop over for a meal or two.

tonight i was at my neighbor's house....5 kids under the age of 8 and the noise was everywhere. there it doesn't bother me, since i know i can leave it behind....LOL

i don't have any lace curtains, but those are fantastic...and sophie makes noises when she dreams, too :)
i love that !!

I love the quiet and the sound of birds in the background. Beautiful photos . I love geraniums and lace curtins as well . I am looking for lace curtins for our bathroom window ! Maybe I can find some on this country curtins website hope they deliver to Canada ! Thanks for sharing . Have a wonderful day !

I loved that catalog! I love to look into George's eyes. There is something about a border collie and their eyes. They look right through you. They know just what your thinking and every move you are going to make. Mine is waiting for me to go up stairs cause he knows what time it is, bed time.

Your flower photos are just beautiful. George is always a treat and I love getting a glimpse of Miss Blackie every so often. She's lovely. Her indecision at the door reminds me of a great piece of humourous writing styled to mimic Hamlet's Soliloquy - by William Shakespeare's Cat (Henry Beard).

I remember well the boisterous meals at our house growing up, and there were only 4 kids in my family so I can only imagine with nearly twice as many at the table! Each of these pictures is more beautiful than the last, truly! I do like my quiet time, but I love a good raucous time too!

At our house growing up we didnt really talk much during dinner ... to this day when I go out to eat with my sister I dont make much conversation .. she on the other hand does .. apparently her escape from home to living in a college dorm expanded her dinner table repertoire to include conversation ... and Toonman & I? We watch TV while we eat ... so déclassé ...

Our almost-empty nest is very quiet. I like it that way. Because it's quiet, I can listen to the birds outside ... or hear when one of the dogs is somewhere they don't belong. Speaking of dogs, your photo of George captured an expression that is exactly like one our Ruby gets ... she's Labrador/Border Collie, and she tends mostly toward the Lab ... except for that undeniably BC look in her eyes.

Such a shame we're not closer. We're so alike! I love silence as well, and lace curtains.

In straight lines, all white furniture/walls and pretty much everything white Denmark, all is living so cold. I couldn't live like that. I'm all for warm woods, colors, wooden blinds and lace curtains - I guess most would call me old-fashioned. But that's me for you. I'll have a look at your link.

We were quite boisterous at the dinner table as kids, I'm the oldest of 4. Dad once put a tape recorder on top of the fridge and recorded the chaos. What a riot!! We were so uncouth, LOL!

Cat's have minds of their own. I'll go out when I'm ready. My house was quiet growing up and I like it that way. Sweet dreams George!

I am not sure why...I didn't grow up in quiet...but I do crave it for large periods at a time. I rarely even have a radio on during the day. On the other hand I wouldn't want this quiet 24/7!

I forgot to mention how much I loved these geranium and curtain photos! Soft and luscious! Beautiful!

Love that George photo, the rug pattern compliments him so nicely here...

and the geraniums....wow..awesome note card material.

Lace curtains speak of a gentler, more romantic time, don't they?

LOVE your Q & A's, as you already know :-)

I just love the first picture..and the next, but the watercolor-like first just took my breath. Then the lace curtains did!
Does Miss Blackie come back, I hope? I would worry, but it's quiet in your space, I guess.
The poem at the end of the post almost broke me today. We've been empty nesters for quite awhile. Last night we took our oldest grandson out for his 21rst birthday dinner and I noticed that it's so quiet around here compared to that. Another mile-stone passed. We used to have a houseful of laughter, and I miss it so much I know you do too.

When I get home from work the first thing I do is look at the phone. If the message light is not blinking, there is a big sigh. Love the quiet when I get home...especially now, when the sun is still up and the birds are still singing. As we move through 'hump' day, have a peaceful quiet week!

I love the sounds of family in a home - especially if I am cuddled up in bed reading or thinking. It must be because I was the youngest and I could hear the others moving about while I tried to sleep. Its comforting to me.
Here in our home it is quiet and I love it. I love the sound of silence, the dogs breathing, the birds outside. Soon the noise will return when my partners son comes here to live. then there will be noise and sadly much of it will be shouting and loud music and constant TV. How I would love to have a family life full of fun and laughter but that isn't the reality here much of the time. Sadly. But that is stepfamily life sometimes. You inherit someone elses troubles and do your best to keep things flowing.
Of course I also want to say how much I LOVE the photos. You always bring such light into my day when I visit. thank you Kxx

I like quiet. My childhood home was violent and chaotic. My own home is my sanctuary and I nurture peace. Some days I'm more successful at it than others.

I love the colour of those geraniums. So pretty and feminine.

Kate ~ your flower photos are amazing. I love pink geraniums about as much as the red. After see your clean doggie I realize it's time to take mine to the dog wash for a clean-up so that she will be photo worthy. Just wondering if you have a Flickr photo account???? That is where I spend and upload to now days.

Loving the photos, Kate! I can hardly wait for geraniums. It will be a few weeks yet. Country curtains is just up the road from here. A wee bit expensive but they sure do have pretty things!

Wishing you a good Thursday!

I love the quiet too. It doesn't happen as much here but at the cabin it does. I'm a TVholic so in town it's on a lot. The cabin I choose to let the birds fill my ears with noise! Soon though with the new "granddaughter" (we just found out)on her way our world will be full of baby-speak! Great pictures.

ok, crazy question...the font you use on the pictures? what is it.
I have been looking for one like it and it is driving me crazy.

Country Girl said...

Dear Need a Latte,
Do you mean the font in the geranium picture? The one with the quote? If so, that's called Dear Joe and it was a free download at dafont.com.

Or do you mean my watermark logo? I'd actually have to look that one up. Have no idea.
