The drama runs deep

I’ve spent most of this evening catching up on the mail I haven’t been able to read for over a week and I want to say “thank you” to all of you who left comments. Thank you for being there, for all of your kind compliments on the photos, and simply for stopping by here in the first place. And for so many of you, making this blog of mine a stop on your daily routine.

It means a lot to me.

In between mail reading, I’ve been texting back and forth with my sister, Char, which is always a pleasure. You see, Charlotte Fun.

Suddenly I realized it was past 8:30 and I hadn’t done anything about tomorrow’s post. So I thought it would be appropriate to post some duck photos in honor of Charlotte. I’ll tell you why at the end of this post.

These photos were taken in Cherokee, NC in the stream that runs behind the Drama Motel, where we stayed the first night of our trip. We’d stopped at a couple of places that did not accept pets and placed some calls to cabin rentals all of which were booked for the weekend and at this point, dinnertime, we were more than ready to stop driving.

The rooms on the website look so much better than the room we were given, but it was a room with two queen beds and we were tired. I just didn’t want to walk on the carpet with my bare feet, if you know what I mean. If you decide to stay there, you need to request a room on the 2nd floor because they come with balcony views of the beautiful little stream. The few pet rooms they offer are all downstairs, however. So George and I went and sat on a rock out back while I snapped photos of the ducks.

Two nice little boys with very strong southern accents came up to me wanting to meet George. Their names were Joshua and Alex and they were skipping stones and pointing out the best ducks for me to take photos.

In the morning, after the best night’s sleep, we headed up and into the park after checking out. We’d been on the park road for about a half hour when we realized we’d left George’s leash back in the motel room.

Somebody wasn’t very happy driving back. That’s all I’m saying.

When my sister Charlotte was very young, she looked very different from the rest of us. There are seven children in our family. Her skin was very pale and she had bright red hair. She was as white as one of the ducks that our parents had given us for Easter one year and we thought she did have a sort of waddle to her gait, so being the unkind siblings that we were, we nicknamed Char “Duck”. And it stuck.

But Charlotte, rather than disliking us for being hurtful towards her, ended up loving the little nickname. And she has the collection of all things duck to prove it.

I love Charlotte. And her wonderful girls. And on that note, I’d like to say until tomorrow, my friends . . .

Duke are such sweet birds... And there is almost always one with a spunky personality. It sounds like your sister has one of those. :)

Gorgeous shots. I had no idea you were one of seven. Can Char make it to Blog Fest too?

Funny...I have an aunt whose nickname was Ducky. She tolerated it as a child, not so much as an adult. :)

WV: dozono, I dozono how she tolerated that!

You know, I grew so fast as a teen that in three months I went through three pairs of expensive tennis shoes- I had to have the best you know as a teen- well, my Dad started calling me Moose...and it stuck...it's been played with a little over the years- Moosie, Amoose, but usually just moose- because I was apparently getting as big as a moose!! Had anyone else called me that I'd probably have been offended- but I love LOVE LOVE that my family and those who are closest to me call me this- it's my nickname and reminds me of people who love me. And yeah- I love the animal the moose-so good I live in Norway eh? ;-))
Glad you're safely home and had such a great trip!

Nice photos, sometimes it's hard to get good ones if the ducks (or other waterfowl) are shy and because the water reflects the light so differently from land.

I love nicknames and the stories that go with.

lol..I think I would have found a place to buy a leash, rather than face the wrath of my husband over havinto drive and hour -out of the way of the "plan" - to get the old one.

Love the Duck story, and you must ask your sister if we can see a photo of some of her duck collection some time! I've always been a lover of ducks. Great photos, as always.

What a neat story! Charlotte sounds like a wonderful sis!

Yikes - sorry about the leash situation - I can imagine how that went over - as my hubby would say "like a fart in a space suit".

Love the ducks!!

I would love the nickname too, no matter its derivation. A sign of endearment, and fun, to boot. My childhood nickname of brotherly derivation was Annie Fannie. You can imagine how quickly I wanted to jettison that! But nothing came to take its place for a long time, and when everyone else seemed to have nicknames I felt sort of left out. In adulthood I still don't have one. (sad, mopey face).

Lovely duck photos. Glad to have you home, and looking forward to more treats from your travels.

Kate, that dog of yours is a gem! I could never sit by the water with any of my cattle dogs while I took pictures. They would be hopping from foot to foot wanting to swim, and ducks?! Oh man, those are to be herded.

Your trip looks fabulous, wonderful pictures too.
Enjoy!

Sorry to hear about the motel. These things happen. We stayed in a place once on our way home from Florida. Later on my husband told me there were roaches in the room. Ick!!!

Nice duck photos! A moments peace in the 'drama'. I'm sure George enjoyed every moment with mom and dad.

Speaking of ducks, my husband stopped a male Mallard from killing another one last night in our backyard. It was trying to drown it. Freaky!

Glad you're home safely, Kate.
