A short story, illustrated

After work today, I had to stop by the daily newspaper in a town nearby. Directly across the street, there’s this cool little restaurant that I’ve been wanting to try since it opened three years ago.

It’s owned by an acquaintance of mine who was primarily in the catering business but established the restaurant which is open intermittently. I think it’s open during lunch on some days and then open for dinner on Friday and Saturday evenings.

I drove into the parking lot and was surprised to see the owner’s car out back, so I went around to the front where she greeted me at the door. She told me she saw me out the window and that they weren’t open quite yet, so I ordered a meal to be picked up later on and then drove home, hoping I’d beat the rain that was heading our way.

This is what the house looked like from the driveway. George ran out to greet me as I got closer.

I went out front to read a book and watch the clouds move in. I looked to the left.

and then to the right.

And when it was time, I left to pick up dinner.

I hope you’re not getting too excited here. Try to contain yourself, please.

Here’s the little restaurant. I brought the camera along with me when I picked up my order because I loved how this looked.

Those shutters are really just a clever application of paint.

When I got home, I found the table already set and I placed the to-go meal on our plates. And then it began to pour. I had beaten the rain and it was perfect timing.

I took a photo of my meal, but my husband was already digging into his.

I had the single crab cake, accompanied by glazed carrots and garlic potatoes. The sauce for the crab had a surprising little kick to it that added a whole new level of flavor. The carrots were incorporated with caramelized onion and the potatoes were a perfect combination of creamy and chunky. It was the best to-go meal I’ve had all year.

After dinner, as I washed the dishes, I heard my husband calling me from the front of the house.

DSC_0706 copy

There was a rainbow, he told me.

DSC_0700 copy 2

And we were having a sun shower.

And life is just fine.

The end.

And now because it’s Friday night and because inquiring minds want to know . . .

At the risk of stating the obvious, when it's raining and the sun is shining, they say the devil is beating his wife. I don't know why, but they do. I don't even know who "they" is/are.

It's well past my self-imposed cut-off of 50 comments but I'll give myself an exemption today...

5. What was the last song to get stuck in your head? I can't remember which is proably a good thing or it might get stuck there again and drive me bats.

Lovely to be back Kate - I have been away so long. What a joyous post too - those blossom trees reminded me of the ones I saw in Lexington last April while on a tour of your beautiful part of the world. The plate of food looks delicious. Isn't this a superb time of year. Best wishes.

In South Africa, where my mother grew up, a sun shower is called "a monkey's wedding" or "umshado wezinkawu". I love them, and we have a lot of them in Vancouver in the spring. Your photo captured it beautifully.

Excellent idea on the shutters. Someone is very creative. I love a good sun shower. I think we may have had one yesterday with our funky weather. The dinner looks delish, I'm just not big on garlic. Every time I eat it I swear I can taste it for 2 days!

Did you hear that thud?
That was me! Fainting when I spotted that crab cake!
I love love love Maryland crab cakes (and softshell crabs!). I wonder if anybody here imports Chesapeak Bay Blue Crabs. Or pasteurized crab meat. I am getting very hungry! I shall have to sail by boat to St. Mary's! ;-)

Love that little restaurant's "shutters" - how clever, and they match the flowering trees.

I am sitting here barefoot, btw.
