Mister Adam for his madam is not

‘Cause it’s too darn hot. Too darn hot!

Sorry. I’ve been humming a tune I’ve had in my head all day long. It’s Cole Porter’s ‘Too Darn Hot’ from the show Kiss Me Kate (1948). I grew up listening to it, as my mother loved to listen to show tunes on the record player. I was pretty young when I first heard this song, but was smart enough to figure out what every average man’s favorite sport was. And it is just too darn hot here.

I ventured out into the garden today despite the heat. The ankle and the knee are doing better and I’m moving around a lot more, so no worries there.

The corn is as tall as I am and there are a few sunflowers that are well over my head. I spied this little tiny sunflower first, by the garden gate.

Yum.

Another sunflower, this one a different type.

And another of the type in the first photo. I cut a couple of nice small zucchini’s while I was out there and took a healthy snip of the basil. I told my husband today that I was making dinner. I didn’t tell him that I’d seen the recipe on the Pioneer Woman’s blog and that I’d been salivating for it all day.

I’ve mentioned before that my husband is the cook in our house and he’s lately been saying that he’s getting tired of it all. Well, I was the cook for years in our family and his complaints are falling on deaf ears. While we were away, I told him I’d cook every night for us in Maine and I did. He was happy and he ate every bit. We had lobster or fresh fish every night.

So tonight, as a surprise, I cooked this for him.

Made with zucchini and basil from our garden, fresh corn, grape tomatoes, and shrimp sauteed in garlic. It’s even more yummy when it’s served cold. In fact, I prefer it that way. Click on the link to go to the recipe for this Summer Stir-Fry.

During dinner tonight, my husband told me that he doesn’t like shrimp anymore. WHAT?! He explained that after eating lobster all last week, shrimp is just something he doesn’t want anymore. ‘It tries to be as good as lobster, but it’s just not’, is what he told me.

I found his announcement highly annoying but kept on eating, because you know what? It was really really yummy. And now I have extra for my lunch for the next two days.

I don’t think shrimp tries to be anything other than what it is. It’s a shrimp for heavens sake. And it’s too darn hot.

Oh my goodness! I saw that recipe today as well and it is already on our meal plan for next week!

I agree it is too darn hot. While it isn't all that hot here compared to where I've lived my whole life (they have been near 100 since early may), it is my first summer without central A/C and I can't say I'm a fan. I'm such a wimp when it comes to heat!

I made the mistake of cooking something for dinner tonight that required the use of our stove and our broiler. I'm still trying to recover and I've been sitting in front of fans ever since! :)

I can't wait to see more pictures of the sunflowers as they continue to bloom. They have always been one of my favorites! I've been awful about commenting lately, but I'm still reading every day. And you posts about Maine had me oh so jealous! I've always wanted to venture up that way!

OH, this dinner looks awesome! My favorites all together! Perfect for a hot evening and today in Connecticut was just that. And humid. And Sticky. Thanks for the recipe, and...

My husband turns his nose up occasionally when I've cooked something that he normally really likes.. and you know, when someone prepares a good meal for you... just appreciate it. Just that.

Amen, sister.

No, shrimp most certainly doesn't try to be anything, in fact it is all it can do to be itself because it cooks so quickly. That recipe looks great and anything that Pioneer Woman puts up IS great and usually pretty simple and easy.

Still, I'd rather eat yours and not have to cook it at all. Call me next time and I'll drive on up.

This looks absolutely delicious! I cooked eggplant parmesan 2 nights ago with homegrown eggplant and marinara sauce made with my own tomatoes and basil. We've been trying to eat healthier and I thought one night per week without meat would be a good idea. My husband thinks eggplant shouldn't try to be chicken either :)

Kate,
Once again, you made me laugh out loud. I've heard of "mutton dressed as lamb", but this is the first time I've heard of "shrimp dressed as lobster". Hilarious...especially your dry reaction to it all. You know I'm going to have to try that shrimp stir-fry. My daughter-in-law gave me Pioneer Woman's cookbook for Christmas (because I hinted that I wanted it), and I LOVE her Chicken Spaghetti recipe. It's a huge hit around here, so you might like to try it (no red sauce).

I'm off to Wisconsin for a family wedding on Thursday, but the laptop is coming, too, so I'll be posting and reading. Please continue to heal, my friend.
xoxo

So glad you are better. A shrimp is just a shrimp. ;0) Yum. I would LOVE to taste that recipe. No one here besides me would eat it, though!

I have always loved shrimp, but about a month ago we had it in a salad here at home and I could barely stand to eat it. Not sure if it was me of if the shrimp was just not up to par. Once this heat wave we are having has passed I plan to try shrimp again.. This week nothing tastes good to me. Your salad looks great!

Love the sunflowers. I think that recipe looks excellent and a shrimp is just a shrimp. Tell him to deal with it.

What a beautiful meal made with love!! I just printed the recipe. I know what you mean about 'falling on deaf ears'!My hubby is retired (I'll retire in 280 days, yes I'm counting). I'm still the cook. His responsibility is to empty the dishwasher. He complains about it I smile!!

Hot as heck in Raleigh 100 today.

Thanks for the lovely post and recipe.

Send some of that heat my way, please ... and some of that shrimp too. I don't care if it tries to be lobster, and it's not. I love shrimp. :-)

My hubby did that to me with shrimp too! I had bought super-jumbo ones and prepared them as a surprise for his birthday. Because it was *my* favorite food! But he picked and nibbled and I asked how he liked them and he replied, oh, they're good, for shrimp. And that is when he revealed they're just "meh" to him. Well, I didn't mind so much at the time because that meant more for me! But several years later, I developed a really bad intolerance (I'm told it's not an allergy) to shrimp, and since then have avoided lobster, too, because isn't that just a shrimp's giant cousin?

Anyway - if I could eat them I would and your recipe looks divine. I just can't deal with the, um, aftershocks anymore.
