Something new

My new lens from B&H Photo came in the mail today. I bought the Nikon 70-300mm lens that I’ve been wanting. I’ve been using a Quantaray 70-300mm and it’s always been ok. But I couldn’t pass this up. And best of all, it only cost me $19.

You see, B&H was having a sale for affiliates and the lens was priced to us at $119. So I used the gift card I’d won last December in one of Pioneer Woman’s photo assignments and I got the lens for a steal.

I tried it out in the yard tonight while my husband was watering the garden.

Well, hello my lovely.

Hello, mommy.

George, have I told you lately how photogenic you are?

George?

I don’t think there’s any chance of me stepping on this. What do you think?

After work today, I went to Hoitytoityville to get my hair done. I was going to let it go, but it really needed a cut (and a little color), and besides ~ my niece pretty much made my mind up for me over the past weekend.

We had been playing in the pool for awhile, and as we were taking a breather, floating on the water in the bright sunshine, she looked at me and said, “Aunt Katy, why are a lot of your hairs all grey-looking?”

I told her it was because I was ever so much more than twenty.

She thought for a second, then asked, “Then how old are you, Aunt Katy?”

I told her I was 53. And the way her eyes became the size of saucers, I knew I’d perhaps scared her a little bit. She said, “But . . . but . . . but you like to play!”

I took this as a high compliment and told her I hope I still like to play when I’m 73. And then I showed her how to swim like a mermaid.

I’m ashamed to say that this was my dinner tonight. My husband had already eaten by the time I got home, and I was hungry so I made this real quick. Although it was a healthy hot dog (as far as they go), and the salsa was freshly made {recipe here}, I wouldn’t exactly call this a healthy meal.

It’s certainly not the kind of meal a mermaid would eat.

Until tomorrow, my friends . . .

doesn't my comment about your hair looking pretty and bouncy counteract alexa's comment about grey hairs?

But it looks even prettier now! (And thank you for that compliment if I didn't thank you on Saturday).

Damn the grey hairs. I'll bet you look like 33 again ; )

Good for you in getting a new toy! George never looked better!

Oh, and I love your new header photo!!! Gorgeous color!

Hey, sometimes a hotdog is just necesary. I actually forgot how to spell necessary (?) and am too lazy to look that up. *sigh*

I hope I love to play at 73 too. And I, too, swim like a mermaid :-)

New lens envy!

How in the world do you become an affiliate to B&H? I need to get in on that gig!

I love the name of your beauty shop. I think I go to the same place. I'm 10 yrs your senior. Kids of all ages gasp in wonder when they see I can still walk and see well enough to take photos!
George, your eyes are especially bright with Mommy's new lens..

You are so funny... love your stories. :-)

And George looks quite dashing as always!

BTW, if you're looking for a good new home for that old Quantaray, I might give you a fair price for it...

I have an 18mm-200 lens that I love. Fast becoming my fav. :)

I am also jealous of all of you gals that can remember movie lines and literature quotes. It wasn't til I went to your link that I could remember what it was from. What a nice way to say we are a bit older. :) My grays are multiplying fast. Darn me for telling far to many people over the last year how FEW I HAD....which is not past tense!

A great deal on your new lens!
Your photos are always excellent, no matter which lens you are using!
George is always happy to pose, he is such a good boy.
Children have so many strange ideas about age. I hope I never feel my real age. (But I really need to have my hair done...I was told the other day that my grey suits me..oh no, it doesn't!)

HA! Our dinner was leftover hamburgers from last night and I added a few cucumbers to last night's leftover salad and WHALA! Instant dinner. I'm lucky to have a husband that loves leftovers as much as I do.

Have a ball with your new lens!

Sense of hummer and you can swim like a mermaid. You are amazing.

My hair started turning gray when I was 17. It was such a pain trying to keep my roots the same color as the rest of my hair....important because I'm a shorty and everyone can see them (I hated those looks I'd get in elevators when I got the full scrutiny) so I gave up a couple years ago and now it is solid white. And I really like it. It keeps my visits to Hoitytoityville to a minimum too which is a big bonus. :-)

(I'm 53 too!)

Have I told you lately that I love you? Your comment to George combined with Emily's story about memorials had me thinking about Pop-pop. So I bought some milky ways and stuck them in the freezer =)

"HI GEORGE!" {{{{{schmooocharoooonies}}}}

CG...NO SHAME...wish I'd had dinner at your place tonight. No need to tell you what I ate here. :>D

In the meantime, CONGRATS on the spiff lens. Treated myself to this baby when I upgraded a bit ago and my gosh, wait till you see what the VR can handle. Seriously. What you can now "hand hold" will blow your mind. A complete wonder of science, I tell ya. Very much looking forward to your pictorial wonders appearing.

I'm going grey now at the temples. Lucky for me I have no nieces to make the point. Condolences on that front.

Country Girl said...

Sam, I don't know how my father ate those frozen milky ways, hard as they were. But he loved them.

Like I loved your comment!!

And to clarify, I thought my niece's statement was nothing short of sweet. She was simply making a point and there was nothing mean about it. I think she was just surprised, is all!

What a nice new lens, and I LOVE that first shot of George. :c) Don't get me started on the rather unhealthy dinners I've been scarfing as of late... ugh. To the treadmill today...

Out of the mouths of babes...Still too young to know how to lie or be politically correct.

We would all do well to approach life with the honesty and the eyes of youth.

Having said that, did you duck her under the water, just once...or twice??

I just love what comes out of the mouths of babes....how precious.

Oh my stars here it is 8:30 am and I'm now craving a hot dog.

I finally gave up on the new longer do I was trying to cultivate....just too hot the grey at my temples is curly and in this heat it has become kinky I felt and looked like I was wearing earmuffs.

I love camera and camera lenses! I wish I could afford to update.
Last night we had hot dogs too for some reason I'm craving them.

The JR said...

I'm sure if they had hot dog stands in the ocean, the mermaids would love to have them for a change of pace.

LOL...I'm with you, I hope to still be playing when I'm 71 (51+the 20). I kinda thought we were close to the same age for some reason.

I have a Nikon D3000. I've only had it a few months and would really like to learn more about it and how to really use all the great options on it. Any suggestions on how to get the most out of my camera?

Nice! And I love the name Hoitytoityvillle, whether it is real or you made it up! George looks as handsome as ever...
And yes, that is the key, knowing how to have fun!

Chesapeake Bay Woman said...

Hoitytoityville is calling my name,. but I don't have time to get my hair done before next weekend, so my gray hairs will be abundant.

The comment about liking to play is indeed high praise. And along those lines, I think it would make you feel good if you just went out to that cantaloupe and put your foot on it - not step on it but just touch your foot to it. Childish, perhaps, but it's all part of staying young. I highly recommend it.

Awesome dinner!

I wish I loved to play more. I am just not that imaginative! Love the new lens. And George, of course ;0)

A few years ago when I was about 53 I was lying down with my 3-4 year old granddaughter when she said "Poor Meme, all those cracks on your face"! Out of the mouths of babes. Now mind you, I'm sure it appeared worst than it was since we were lying down!!

Deb said...

Kate, there is nothing, NOTHING wrong with having a hot dog for dinner in the middle of summer. K?

What's for dinner tonight? Hamburgers?!?! LOL

There's nothing like a new toy to make a girl feel like she's 23 again. :) For years in my forties, I felt like I was still in my thirties. Now, in my 50's, I feel like I'm OLD! I think I need to play mermaid...

Or get a new lens... :)

GailO said...

It is just that as we get older our toys get more expensive:)...

I read the latest post first and now I see that you got a new 70-300 lens...what a great deal!...I need a telephoto for kids and birds but also want a 50mm and a macro...which first is my dilemna...as well as how to pay for it when I'm not working:)

I ♥ hot dogs too...

Donalyn said...

I don't know - all the mermaids I know love hotdogs - and not just the healthy ones either. :) have a great weekend Kate!
