My 3-day weekend has been quite the quiet one so far, although Friday morning I was happily surprised with a visit from my sister, Char, who brought along her daughter and grand-daughter. Photos to come later ~
Speaking of quiet, I was weeding out on the patio yesterday and thinking that it was such a shame that the hummingbirds haven’t been coming around much this year. I figured it was due to the fact that my husband’s aloe plants didn’t bloom this year. I have tried to keep them alive and thriving like he did, but after transplanting some of them early this spring, they didn’t do so well and are only just coming back healthy and strong. As soon as I had the thought about the aloe plants, I heard the distinctive thrum of a tiny hummingbird.
So I stopped weeding immediately, went inside and washed my hands, and came back outside with the camera to wait.
And was rewarded with this.
As far as I’m concerned, it was pure luck. I shot it on the auto dial (sport mode) of my Nikon D7000. I then edited it in Photoshop CS5 using my favorite new actions {freebies!} from Little Lusker and finished it off with {this} texture from Shadowhouse Creations.
I uploaded it to FB and hours later, was shocked to find more comments than ever from people telling me how much they loved it. So I uploaded it to my etsy sale site. Not that I hope to make any money from it . . . I just hadn’t been to my etsy site in a while and was glad I went. Only two of my photos were currently for sale. Ha!
Female Rufous Hummingbird on Etsy
Here is another view, with her little red throat spot.
: : :
This morning, I woke to a gray day and took my camera and my coffee outside on the patio and caught several other hummingbird photos after filling the little feeder.
I love this stuff.
I’m so terribly exciting, aren’t I?
I bought {this sweet feeder} from Duncraft last year on an end-of-season sale. They have it available in red, clear, and blue as well.
It’s sometimes nice to have a pretty prop when you’re taking bird photos.
These are kind of cool, too:
And then, the male Rufous Hummingbird showed up.
Hummingbirds move really fast so I was glad to get some photos of them at rest.
All in all – quite a rewarding weekend, photographically speaking.
Although I think George is kind of bored with the sitting around . . .

As always, FABULOUS!!! You are such a talented writer and photographer. Thank you for sharing your world with us.
Mostly, I think life is all about the little things except...there aren't really any truly little things. Beautiful photos; so glad you captured the moment.
Beautiful, really! Every one of them is frame worthy!
Wonderful photos - wish we had humming birds over here. Why is it that the male birds are always so much more attractive than the females? Thank goodness it doesn't apply to humans
Such glorious photos; thank-you for sharing! I agree; every one of them worthy of listen gin your Etsy shop.
Truly Stunning Captures! I LOVE 'em all!!
Thanks to you, I have discovered just what beautiful creatures hummingbirds are! God definitely knew what He was doing when he created those little birds.
Absolutely stunning pictures of the hummers! I could hear the thrumming of the bird as you described it, as they are usually out and about when I take my pups out in the morning.
You really lucked out with these shots, they are exceptionally beautiful!

Lovely, Kate, just lovely. I haven't seen many hummers here this summer either. Probably because I missed our wisteria blooming while in OZ. Wish I could capture photo subjects like you do. Hedy
Your photographs are always fantastic.
Glad the hummingbirds arrived.
Blessings.
What a treat for us!! These are spectacular shots!

Kate, these are just gorgeous!
Truly some of your very best.
I hope you've had a wonderful weekend!
Beautiful shots! Thanks also for sharing some info on how you took them. Your photography is outstanding.
My gosh, those are beautiful shots! I really loved the green gold wings of the female. Thanks for sharing!
absolutely stunning shots.. look at the detail of the little feathers on that ruby throat!
Awwww! They are just so stinkin' cute! Love that last cutie :-)
They are such beautiful little birds. The detail in the photos is wonderful, I've looked at each photo individually, all those tiny feathers like fish scales.
And the look on the male bird in the second last photo...he has fixed his beady eye on something and he is not too pleased.

I love all these - the top one in particular.
those are superb … my weekend was quiet too and i didnt have any visitors or birds .. woe is me
fantastic shots!
Wow and Wow and Wow!! These are beautiful Kate! I get lots of hummingbirds at my feeders but never get shots as pretty as these. I do have to do something about the ugly peeling paint background I generally have in them lol!
They are all lovely but I especially love the photo of the hummingbird spreading her wings.
These are just stunning! We've had several females around all year, but I've yet to see a male, which seems odd. I love every one of these.
Your photographs of the hummers are stunning. Certainly love your blog.
I guess I'm as exciting as you because nothing excites me more than getting that good shot of a bird. And these are soooooo good!
the best hummingbird photos EVER!!!!
i'm so jealous!!!
Beautiful little gems. And wonderful captures. They're much like the ruby throat but even the females have some red. Lovely. And I really like that feeder.
We noticed our hummers were plentiful in June this year and then disappeared for several weeks before they appeared in full force again. Wonder where they go? Glorious photos, so glad you have thought to put them out on Etsy.
