Sunday was a quiet day. No special dinner or anything; my husband hasn’t been feeling that great. No worries, though.
I spent the afternoon in the yard with friends I met under the trees and in the bushes.
Oh, yeah. I’m a wild one.
And so are they. Yeah, you guessed it. Me and my bird friends.
This juvenile Eastern bluebird tries to get a grip just after landing on this vine.
(scroll down to Identification and click on ‘typical voice’)
The red-bellied woodpecker is a good-sized bird with a distinctive sound. I’m nearly getting to the point of identifying them just by their sounds. Especially this one.
A white-breasted nuthatch runs up and down the tree.
I believe this is a female juvenile downy woodpecker. She looks a little surprised.
This little Carolina wren was singing its heart out. And quite loudly at that.
And lastly, a tiny little moth who was sitting on my knee for quite awhile. I couldn’t get a shot until I shooed him away because I had the zoom lens on the camera. He’s pretty cool-looking with those chocolate chip eyes.
Gotcha. Sorry. Couldn’t help myself. I just really like that tune.
Until tomorrow, my friends . . .
PS ~ Congratulations to Rory McIlroy, one of the youngest players ever to win the US Open. It was a pleasure to watch you this Father’s Day in my nice cool living room.

Wow, those bird shots are really amazing! You managed to capture each one at just the right moment. Was it hard? :)
All the best,
This Good Life
I LOVE that song.........LOVE IT. Makes me want to dance.
i believe that's a skipper butterfly in that last shot. they're so cute with their 'fur' and big eyes. :)
Just beautiful.. I have only seen on Bluebird and that was at my sisters.. Good thing there were no bugs in the air ..I would have ate a few as my mouth was wide open at the beauty of that bird..ha.
Kate they are all beautiful and your song got my feet a going.
Kate, what a great post! I love putting the songs to the birds which I yet don't recognize. My fave that visits is the red-bellied woodpecker ... he's amazingly large. So wish for a bluebird to show up!
Wonderful photos and post !
We have a red bellied woodpecker that we named Charlie he loves his peanuts and waits for me every morning to put them out ! Also a little female Wren we named Molly who has moved into our bird houses, Wrens have two nests one real for their babies and one fake one to ward off prediters ! I love my feathered friends here and we have lots ! My photography blog has lots of photos of them. Have a wonderful day !
Loved watching Rory McIlroy win today, but he wasn't the youngest. Very impressive though...so happy for him and his dad. Reminds me of young Tiger Woods

Great post. I enjoyed the bird songs and the "moth song"!
Love, love, love the baby birds!!!
OK, the photos are perfect as usual, but that Youtube link? Gave me CHILLS. Great song and great band.
great song....beautiful friends you hang out with...hope your hubby is feeling better...
While riding my bike today, I spotted a Indigo Bunting....totally blue. I love birds and I love their individual songs.
I love seeing all the beautiful birds that grace your yard. We live in a desert area and don't see the colorful birds that you get to see. Love the sound the moth makes, haha.
Birds make me happy--well, most of them--maybe not so much crows and mockingbirds!
Love the bluebirds--do yall have indigo buntings up north? They are so beautiful and I love their cheerful sounds!

That moth did have chocolate chip eyes, wonder what's up with that?! Love all your birdie pics and I am impressed that you are learning to identify them by their calls. xo ~Lili
My wildness likes yours!

Quiet here today, too, but then--we don't mind it.
You have so much patience--getting those birds in those "poses." :)
I so seldom see bluebirds--and I've never seen one that small, but the wren today--is my favorite, I think. So cheery!
So lovely.. one and all. That Downy looks fluffy and innocent. A juvenile, perhaps?
One of the bummers about now being hearing impaired is .. no more bird song! I rely on people around me to tell me what they are hearing.
Your photos are awesome, as always - hoping you guys have a better week ahead.
You have a great variety of birds there. Beautiful pictures.
Oh..What a beautiful bird pictures!
Very beautiful images! Greetings,Monica
what a fun post .. you sure hang with some lovely vocalizers!
That website + one lively cat = hours of entertainment. *grin*
My all-time favourite bird call has to be this one:

Sounds like the perfect way to spend the afternoon. I love listening to the birds, love that you get such great photos of them.
The wrens just crack me up, so loud for such little birds!
you're about as wild as me, you know....
we watched the birds, too, yesterday.... at our cottage. the hubby even got a shot of a hummingbird while i was doing the dishes....
our red bellied woodpecker that is identical to yours never showed up once....i'm wondering if that's him. he probably found out you've got better feed then we do and flew south.....
and our little house wren only got nasty once....amazing how something so little can scare 20 birds away from the feeder....
oh, and chip and dale entertained us for awhile, too...they are incredibly funny !
xoxo
Beauteous birdies!
Why do you have such wonderfully colourful birds over there Kate - our birds are mostly so drab by comparison.
I don´t know Kate, those friends seem a bit flighty....but sure hope you enjoy them while they last..hehehehe....and it looks like you do! Although it is hard for me to imagine you could be more wild then your friend with the red mohawk....hehehehe....
Have a great evening my friends and thanks for the words of advice about getting some z´s...
Ready for some quiet time here. Been in Marco Island on vacation with 15 people in one house. Pretty busy place. Then stuck in Detroit after flight delayed then cancelled AFTER we boarded. Luckily got boarded on standby on 12;20 that left at 1:33.....ugh. Love the bird photos.
Sorry things are a challenge, whatever it may be. You guys should do the Feeder Watch project through Cornell - the link is on the site where the bird calls are. We live about 20 minutes from Cornell and the Sapsucker Woods, which would be an awesome stop for people who were driving on their way to Maine, or on their way home, and who maybe wanted to sit on the front porch while waiting. Feeder Watch is fun and only $15 - I did it the year before last and plan to do it again this year.
How I love your bird friends! It was a busy weekend here so the relaxing sounded pretty good to me!
Now this post brought a smile to my face. Thank you, my friend!
