Fiery gems for you

At times I am completely overwhelmed by the comments and e-mails I receive by publishing this blog. The things people say have touched my heart, have made me embarrassed (but in a good way), inspired me, and made me feel less alone.

One reader told me recently that my blog reminds her of a an old song by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. The song is ‘Our House’, a long-ago favorite of mine that I hadn’t thought about in ages.

How odd that tonight, while I was editing photos to use in this post, I began humming to myself the very words to this song, which began while working on the window photograph below (the windows are illuminated . . .) I’m sure that so many of you know the words to this song.

Go ahead and click. And maybe go back in time a bit.

.

I'll light the fire
You put the flowers in the vase
That you bought today

Staring at the fire
For hours and hours
While I listen to you
Play your love songs
All night long for me
Only for me

Come to me now
And rest your head for just five minutes
Everything is good

Such a cozy room
The windows are illuminated
By the sunshine through them
Fiery gems for you
Only for you

Our house is a very, very fine house
With two cats in the yard
Life used to be so hard
Now everything is easy
'Cause of you

It’s not really like this here. This isn’t really our house; it’s just where our hearts reside at the moment. My husband isn’t who he used to be at this time last year. He doesn’t cook  for me anymore, and he lately has been driving me bats because he’s not enjoying my cooking, preferring to have toast with cream cheese for dinner instead, which is what happened again tonight. So I’m changing the words above to

now everything is cheesy

‘Cause of you

: : :

I think it gives a more accurate description.

I don't mean to make fun. I don't. I do get annoyed when I make a perfectly delicious dinner and someone chooses to eat toast instead. But then I consider the source and the brain, and let it go.

Wonderful images to accompany such sweet lyrics. Imperfection is part and parcel of any authentic house/home.

I love that song!! I suppose some of that has to do with medications? Or maybe not. I hope that just means more leftovers for you:-)

What a great post!!! Love all your photos--the window with the "fiery reflection" is amazing. Things change as the years go by and all of us have to change and adjust right along with them (some of us have to do more of the "adjusting"--but we're up to it--right)!!! I haven't ever tried toast and cream cheese, but I do know your delicious dinners would be more to my liking. Hang in there. Hugs, Mickie :)

Kate, this a truly beautiful post! I'm a late follower, and I don't know what the past year has been like for you, so I want to send you my thoughts and prayers as you are continuing to work through some disturbing times. Hugs to you! xoxo

At least he's eating something, though I would be annoyed too. I think at this point you just can't win, Kate. I know you're trying hard though *hugs*

Kate,
One of my favorite songs. It brings such wonderful memories.
Humor is what helped me through the changes in my husband over the past years. We had a wonderful neurologist who told us that this was his best advice...
Oh there were days that I couldn't find my humor, but it is what helped.

OMG! Love that song and this post. Your blog is always so welcoming. I always feel like I am visiting an old friend when I come here. You are so down to earth and your photos always make my heart happy. I love the sacred space you have created here...it is home.

Your pictures of your house, to me, it always looks content. I know that is a weird adjective for a house, but it does look happy and content. Maybe I transpose how I seem to think you feel on the photos. Not sure. I know one night a few years ago, during the holiday , our house was full of people, and food, and laughter. I went outside to bid someone good bye and when I turned around to look at the house I swear it was smiling. Your house just always looks content to me. No matter how nutty I am, your pictures are always beautiful.

That is one of my favorite songs, and I agree, your blog does remind me of that song too! I love the photos, and just because your name isn't on the deed, doesn't mean it isn't your home, you have made it the cozy home that it is today. I hope your hubby breaks free from his toast and cheese cravings, but I did get a chuckle out of your new lyrics!

Your comment after your post made me laugh. I think that is true of all our husbands! Just consider the source! One of my all time fave songs ... and yep, always have loved stopping by here!

Oh bless you for still having your sense of humor! It does help get us through the trials and anger and frustration and makes it bearable-I think.......

Such a beautiful place to live and yes, I remember that song well! Toast and cream cheese--that is a combination I've never heard of, but many things affect appetite. I hope your hubby gets his "taste" back for cooking up some delicious dinners. It's nice to have someone else cook when you've worked all day--Although I enjoy cooking, it sure is enjoyable when I don't HAVE to!

Such absolutly beautiful pictures! It is true that life is always changing... I imagine the people that looked upon that house in a lovely sunset 100 years ago. What mattered most to them?

You illustrate the lyrics perfectly! That song has been the theme song of our old house since we bought it...goes to show how old we are:) A couple of summers ago I got to see Crosby Stills and Nash sing together...a mistake...they do not sound the same I am sorry to say:)

As always, I love the photos! And I don't see it as making fun, I see it as humor as a coping mechanism for all of life's injustices.

I love that song as well. Thanks for the song in my head (which follows one from "Amahl and the Night Visitors" from earlier in the day), and the lovely pictures, as well. And George, from earlier! I heart George.

I can sympathize with you about your husband not being the same as he was last year. My husband has Multiple Sclerosis. It has affected his short term memory and attention span. I am his short term memory along with our appointment calendar and the notepad he carries. Sometimes it seems that his mental maturity is stuck in his late teens or early twenties. When you blog about things happening to your husband I pray that you will have the strength to deal with the changes. Keep blogging and sharing your pictures. I enjoy your post very much.

On the bright side, you get to eat more leftovers. ;)

Great post with a fondly-remembered song.

I never heard that song before...what does that say about me? But your photos were lovely as usual. I love the home where you live...your heart is there, so it´s your home, even if it´s not your home on paper.

But where is your snow??? You said you had snow??? Did it melt? We still have plenty...I´m glad. I´d rather have snow then icy rain any day....

Hope you have a great Friday evening...and get to eat something else besides toast and cream cheese...although that sounds delightful for breakfast with some red pepper...mmmmm....

I always enjoy my visits over here Kate. That song really does reflect such a beautiful message and that fiery sunset reflected in the window is really extraordinary! My Mom sometimes eats saltine crackers crumbled up in milk for dinner (its a habit she got from my Grandpa that I really never did understand). xo ~Lili

Oh Kate, thank you so much for putting that song in my head. It is SO much better than the one it replaced, which I won't name because you are my friend. :)

The photos in this post are so beautiful!!! I can imagine all the lives that your house has seen through the years -- all the joys, and all the sorrows, too...

I hope you have a wonderful weekend. It's supposed to be nice and warm here... Hope you get the same. xoxo

I think that may be my all time favorite song. Maybe it's the era we grew up in? Love your blog and all your beautiful images. I agree with other readers, at least your husband is eating something, but can imagine how disappointing it is if you make something special for dinner. Keep smile and have a great weekend!

absolutely love the picture of the sun in the window. that is gorgeous!! sometimes we must take the good with the "bad" even if it is cream cheese. :) Have a great weekend!

Kate, hope things level out for hubby & you (for lack of better words). Is it attitude or physical disability that has kept him from going back to cooking? Shame, I thot he enjoyed it & I know you enjoyed the meals. Again, praying for peace & good health,
