Hydrangeas and tulips

It’s late afternoon on a dreary Saturday that earlier held the promise of snow. It has turned into a lovely day to read a book which is a better way of saying that the sky is a dreary and dull gray. It’s all how you perceive things.

This morning I picked up my beloved Miele vacuum from the repair shop where it had gone for a 2-week spa treatment while I pined for its return. I hope you know that I’m really stretching the truth here, but I will admit that my sisters are always making fun of me and my vacuum love. While I was in Wilmington, I decided to visit the Trader Joe’s again where I picked up some lovely flowers to cheer me up on this snowless Saturday.

And I have a three-day weekend, which only adds to the cheer.

I placed the tulips in a cool vase by my kitchen sink.

The book I am reading is The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, one of my favorites and one that I thought I had lost. And then I heard from one of my sisters who told me that I’d lent it to her a couple of years ago and after she’d read it, forgot to return it. Luckily, she didn’t return it to me because the one I am reading came in the mail yesterday from (surprise of all surprises) one of my readers.

Andi, I can’t thank you enough.

The book is written as a series of letters just after WWII and centers on the island of Guernsey in the English Channel which was occupied by the Germans during the war. Residents had no news for five years of the outside world and the stories that play out are so interesting.

As I write this sentence, I glance out the window and find to my utter surprise that it has begun to snow. Oh, I hope it keeps up at least enough to turn my world white for awhile.

Enjoy your weekend, folks. Hope you like my flowers.

What beautiful blooms.... A bit of visual hope to sustain the heart till Spring makes a proper appearance!

Your read sounds fascinating. I just adopted a cookbook written by all the women working at a factory during WWII welding, tooling, running heavy machinery. Tho not filled with the detail and stories of your volume (sadly) each recipe did show a picture of each woman and noted her job. Really fascinating.

I was amazed too by the fact that all the recipes were based on using only what limited rations were available by ration stamp books. I'm no cook, lol but I know enough of cooking to say these were extremely clever women, when at the factory and when at the stove!

I'll have to track down, if to be found, another copy of your book.

Thanks for the images - SO cheerful!

By chance, I was hoping to come across a good book recommendation! I for sure will look that one up. Tonight we still have snow on the ground from Valentine's Day but no new snow from today. When I read your post I ran to the window with hope since we are only about 45 min or so away, but alas, nothing. I think I will call it a night tonight and curl up in bed to watch Beasts of the Southern Wild that I rented from Redbox. I am finding a theme here...that was another recommendation from you ;)

Gnight!

LOVE the flower photos - so cheerful! I can't wait for spring.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society was a book club pick at the library I work at a few months back, and it went over really big. Should I add it to my "to read" list?

Throw a few pennies in your tulip vase, they'll perk up and last a little longer. I may have told you this already.

Thoroughly enjoying The Thirteenth Tale, almost done, what a great read.

Flowers and snow, what a silly time of year it is.

I love flowers. I like snow. A good book with tea or coffee with a cute dog and cat near by, that's the best of all.

Enjoy your weekend, sounds like you already are.

Our snow has all but melted. The nearest Trader Joe's is over two hours away from us. I try to stop there when we make a trip to the city. Love the tulips. They are my favorite flower!

Love your flowers, esp. the tulips. We had 69 degrees today. Everyone walked around the lake today that is practically dried up. Need the rain bad. Enjoy your snowy day.

So pretty. I've been enjoying tulips for a while now. They're like elegant silk offerings of colour in my otherwise white world.
