A walk in the park

I spent the weekend in New York City and have some photos to share with you. You knew I’d take pictures, didn’t you?

This weekend, I visited with Daryl, who I met through blogging. On Saturday, we headed out to walk through Central Park, taking a cab up to Columbus Circle and beginning at the entrance there. The day began quite cloudy yet mild but later on, the sun burst through the clouds. It was really a perfect day for walking.

The San Remo building is so photogenic. I love the double towers.

Thanks for telling me the name of it, Daryl.

This carved stone finial caught my eye. That’s the Bethesda Fountain to the right, in the background.

It really was such a beautiful day and so many people were out enjoying it.

This is The Dakota, one of the most interesting buildings in the city. Back in the late 1800’s, when it was built, it stood alone – far away from the hustle and bustle. It stands at the northwest corner of 72nd Street and Central Park West.

You may say I’m a dreamer . . . but I’m not the only one.

The Imagine Circle, dedicated to the memory of John Lennon, was designed by Bruce Kelly, chief landscape architect for the Central Park Conservancy. It lies directly across from the Dakota, in Strawberry Fields.

I had to wait quite some time for the mosaic to clear of people who were having their photo taken here.

I thought this was an interesting shot. Taken from a little bridge while walking in the Ramble. At least, I think it was the Ramble. I’m not entirely sure.

What I am sure of is that I added a texture overlay to the photo.

The view from Belvedere Castle. Built primarily for decoration, the castle sits atop Vista Rock, one of the park’s highest elevations. The turret on the castle is actually the highest point in the park.

See what you can learn visiting here? And you can read more by visiting the link below.

The view from the castle, on the other side. Can you see the road running through the park and the two taxi cabs?

I love the fact that the city is so full of nature and beauty. But I’ll tell you, our legs were absolutely killing us after walking for hours on end, up and down hills. It’s actually quite hilly in the park.

On Sunday, our friends from CT came to town for lunch.

DSC_0357 copy 2

We ate at an excellent Thai place on 9th Avenue, between 51st and 52nd Streets. Daryl and I got there first, just before they opened, and we got the best table in the house.

DSC_0353 copy 2

The restaurant is long and narrow and long and the décor is interesting.

Lauren, me, Annie, Daryl. More photos to come tomorrow. And please don’t say anything about my giant man hands here. How in heaven’s name this always seems to happen is beyond me. I think it’s the angle of the camera. Yes, that must be it.

Until tomorrow, my friends . . .

Ah, such fun for you all Kate. And rambling around Central Park. Now if it had been next weekend I could have come to say hello to you!! Maybe you might have another trip up while i am staying with my daughter...she is about to have baby number two soon.

The Ramble...I actually took my sister through there one year, having never been in there myself, and we very nearly were lost. Well, she thought we were lost, but when you know the nature of Central Park, you know you are actually, despite appearances, never very far from anywhere...well east or west anyway!

Love the photos Kate. They are just excellent ...and Daryl is such a great guide too!

You took some wonderful photos! Very different and a unique point of view from what we usually see of NYC photos. Nice work and glad you had fun!

Those are gorgeous photos! The ones of the park and the trees are especially neat right now with just the beginnings of spring on the twigs but still bare enough to see thru them to the landscape and buildings around them. Wonderful! Thanks for sharing!

Oh, I feel like I just took a stroll through Central Park, thank you for that. I haven't been to New York in such a long time.
And I love the shot of the four of you, so sweet.

It's got to be wonderful to have friends like that! I know to have them, you must be one.
I knew you'd have pictures, yes--I'll bet you've got lots more, too. I'm so glad you went--I have gotten too old to do much walking. You seem to know how to really enjoy life, Kate, under any circumstance--I think that is a gift!

God bless!

I so want to visit New York someday and your photos just encourage that conviction that someday I WILL visit and I'm going to be totally fascinated walking around that city. It must be one of the most amazing cities in the world! You see New York all the time in movies that you sometimes forget it's a real place where real people live...how exciting!
I find it incredibly fascinating how you nit pick at what you claim to be your "flaws". Had you not mentioned your hands, I would never have thought for two seconds they looked like man hands! All I saw was foud lovely looking ladies sitting around having a grand time together, then you go and mention man hands and well....since you mentioned it....hahahaha, naw, just kidding with you!! You know I had too since you brought it up, but I think you're completely silly for even thinking that way! Are you just as critical of people you meet? I'd be afraid to meet you for fear you'd find something manly about me!!! hahahaha!!! Ok, giving you a hard time again, I'll be nice...
Have a super Monday Kate! Can't wait to see round two of NY photos!!

Oh Kate what a fantastic time you must have had. I really enjoyed your tour and saw a few things I had never seen before too, like the Imagine Circle. It is such an exciting place to visit and your pictures really bring back memories of when I lived there back in the late 70s. I really should plan a trip again, thanks for posting these! xo ~Lili

I really enjoyed your trip to NY...I wish you would share with us the lens you used and your settings...I am a beginning photographer and could really use some help, mostly I take close ups but would like to take landscapes.

Have a good one!

Awesome shots .. the one with the 'road running through the park' is called the 65th Street Transverse as it connects the East and West sides of Manhattan .. AND those low buildings there on the right? That's a police precinct but I cant remember the #/name .. I am glad I remembered the San Remo name .. this was the best weekend I've had since before Christmas .. thank you for coming in and making it such fun.......xo

It's so cool that you get to connect with your blogging friends. Y'all look like a fun group of girls!

The photos are all amazing. Would love to visit there someday. Alas, all my trips in the states will be devoted to Portland, OR as long as my daughter lives there. :/

Have a great day!!

GAH I am so wrong .. that's the 86th Street Transverse and Police Station (that's a long lens you have there, sistah) click here for specifics about the police station

Awww, you guys are so cute! And I think maybe it's the wide angle lens that distorts anything near the edges...

Love all your beautiful shots! :)

Love the photos of the park. When I went to NYC, back when I was 18. I could go to see the Empire State building and the Statue of Liberty or the park. I went to see the other two.

If I ever get back, I'll for sure spend the day looking around and now I'll know where to go.

So glad you had a good time with your friends.

Especially love the carved stone finial and the wrought iron...did you take those especially for me!!!!

Have a great week, Jeanne

PS: As I was walking yesterday in my flip flops, I observed new foliage on the trees...spring must be here in southeast Texas!

Dear country Girl,

I have a little photography related question. Since I have been following your blog for a while now I thought you might be the perfect person to ask my question to. It's quiet a simple one actually. Take picture number two in the a walk in the park post. On the foregroudn you see a pillar and background is blurry, did your camera blur the backround, or is it something you fixed with photoshop or any other programme?

Thanks for reading my question,
I would love to hear from you!

I thought that was the Dakota. Does Yoko still live there? I don't know. Thanks for the shots of NYC. I'll have to 'visit' there vicariously through you...'we' enjoyed it so much, didn't 'we'!
