Snowbound 4

I’ve decided that these last few posts will have to be my Snowbound vignette series because seriously folks, I am still snowbound from the storm that hit Friday night and all day Saturday. A plow showed up late last night after the Super Bowl which sort of surprised me. And his truck is still sitting stuck in the middle of our driveway.

Luckily, I have nowhere to go and am secretly enjoying the isolation here. I think it’s good for the soul to have a little isolation now and then.

My husband and I spent the late morning cleaning in different parts of the house. It’s so nice having two people doing chores because they get done so much quicker.

We started another puzzle. There is something quieting about working slowly on putting puzzle pieces together. I was also working on Pioneer Woman’s latest photo assignment which is shallow depth of field. I shot the photo above on an aperture of 4, focusing on the mug at the very front of the shot. I shot the photo below on an aperture of 5.4. This is a photo of [my favorite furniture polish]. Ever. I love how it makes your wood gleam and the scent is beautiful. I didn’t enter either of these; I was just playing around.

For this assignment (which is really a contest where the odds of winning are a gazillion to one), you are permitted to enter only one photo per day. Today I entered [this one]. I did get a little freaked out when I added it to her Flickr group pool, though. The group pool had been up for just a few hours and already there were over 24,000 submissions. I thought I had arrived at the wrong place and it was an older assignment.

It’s a beautiful day here in Maryland. The Baltimore schools, which are about an hour away, have already closed for the next two days. Our area is slated to get more snow tomorrow night into Wednesday.

I think I’ll take my cup of tea out to the front porch where I can sit in the sunshine. The sun has been packing down all that snow making it even heavier. It’s pretty chilly outside but in that sun, it just plain beautiful.

All photos taken with a Nikon D80

Until my next post then . . .

Update: I just received a call that our school will be closed for tomorrow and Wednesday. Wow.

But I love your snow photos Kate...just very special....love that one that you entered in the contest...I can't imagine having to deal with 24,00 entries on a blog competition...I am so glad to be little boring me!

I love shallow depth of field!
It is like writing a short story instead of a novel, paring down to the essence. Your images work beautifully!

The photo is perfect...good luck! I think some isolation time is good too and it sounds like you are enjoying it. When you can get going again, that will be wonderful too! Come say hi :D

I've been outside shoveling all this snow since Sat. I'm really tired out! I've cleared my front and back porches and made a walk to the chicken coop. And shoveled out 2 cars. My husband has been out all day plowing. This MD snow is alot of work, but it sure is pretty! I think I'm ready for Tuesday's snow...

Hubby and son are off to make another attempt at clearing the driveway at the farm. I'm staying inside with the pups and enjoying a little "me" time!

Hope we don't get the 8 - 10 extra inches they are calling for. And I hope your photo wins...I think it's a winner already! Love the bird pics, so pretty!

Stay warm. Snuggle up with George.

Love your pictures.

Just new to your blog. Wow you've been busy. Beautiful blog. How did you learn to do the blog-be so creative? Is there a help site?
What lens do you use for the bird shots? You've got me excited about photography.

Do you have built in snow days like I did in Wisconsin? One year we missed so much school, the year was extended by almost 2 weeks! yikes!
I love all of your snow/bird/etc. photos!
Enjoy your time off!

Thanks all.

Hi, Maggie and welcome. I tried to respond to you but your profile doesn't have your e-mail available for me to respond.

I use a Blogger template called Minima. If you want to know what template any blogger uses, you can right click on the blog's home page and go to 'view source'.

I tweaked my template just a little with the html code. I have the body copy width set to accommodate the large photos. I also use Windows Live Writer which is a free download. I use that rather than Blogger to post my blog. I hope this little bit of information helps. I got a little help from a blogging pal I met along the way. I chose the background color myself with the color sampler tool in Photoshop.

I'm sure this is a lot to take in.

Thanks everyone! And as I write this, my driveway is being cleared!

I love when I have help with the chores. They get done so much quicker and it keeps me on track. (I'm SO easily distracted)

Beautiful photos. As much as I dislike a large gathering of white stuff in one place, I envy your snow day(s) at home. Very peaceful and relaxing. I have one puzzle that I like and never quite finished. I've been thinking about pulling it out again, but I don't have the time to address all the other things I want to do, so it will have to wait.

I like all your photos. Good luck!

Closed Mon, Tues, and Wed? Holy Cow! You aren't living in New Hampshire that's for sure! Ha haa!

Enjoy your quiet time. I'm thinking that same thing about the photo contest, it's a million to one shot. I thought about entering but then thought 'not'. PW must have a corporation running her blog by now.

So what happened to the driver of the truck?

Your photos are beautiful and I hope you win!

Country Girl said...

Ah, good question, Nicolezmamma. Another set of headlights appeared after the truck got stuck. I think it was a tractor that picked him up. They came back today, 3 men with a bigger pickup truck. The driver told me he'd been clearing this driveway for years and he'd only gotten stuck three times.

When I first started reading Pioneer woman, there were about 25 people commenting. I actually had one of the finalist titles for her "love story" - mine was "The Hiney Tingle Chronicles". But then that High Heels title won. Bummer.

Thanks for so freely sharing info.
One more question..How do you do the photo collage? mdumbarton@gmail.com

Hi Kate! Well, in Kansas we have a little white stuff like your white stuff, but not nearly as much. We got about 6-7" last night.

Anyway. I'm wondering if that 24,000 is the total number of submissions PW, has from all her photo contests. I went looking at her pages of entries until it got into the Christmas bokeh contest and it wasn't that many pages. And since I got into the bokeh contest entries, I'm thinking it's a cumulative number from all her contests. Looking forward to all your entries.

Love these but I was mildly disappointed to discover that was a furniture polish. I was hoping you were going to recommend a new belly warmer. ;)

I love your Snowbound series! The photos through your windows are exceptional. I like all of your photos but especially the birds. The one of your husband and George in the distance is neat.

After reading the word bokeh so many times I had to find the definition. I like the style (is that the correct terminology?)

I can't stand it!!!! I am so jealous of your snow, sun, and isolation! You Lucky Girl!!

All we have is rain, dreary skies, and more rain, and cold dreary rain. UGH!!!! and on top of it...I have to go to work!

Good morning Kate, enjoy your days of "freedom". Thank you for sharing those beautiful photos - you manage to make the mundane look beautiful. You are really inspiring me to finally look at the instruction manual for my new camera so that I can try some of those shots myself. Unfortunately I do not have all those beautiful cardinals to photograph - I do hear them sometimes but they refuse to show themselves. We do have nut hatches, juncos and chickadees and from time to time a sap sucker shows up as well.
