Vignette #1: Second storm

I woke up this morning to what I thought was the scent of baking bread. I tried to hide from the deliciousness of it by burrowing further under the covers, but it was futile. I came downstairs to freshly made coffee and chocolate chip raisin oatmeal cookies. It wasn’t bread, after all.

The world is white outside. Through the night we had about 4-5 inches of snow but for several hours it was freezing rain, so when you walk it’s pretty treacherous. So far, all is quiet but high winds are predicted to begin later today.

As I sipped my coffee, I sat by the kitchen window and took many photos of the birds on the feeders or on the trees waiting a turn on the feeders. And all of them were really not good. I’d love a new Nikkor 70-300mm lens but that’s neither here nor there. A reader asked that I identify the birds I post, which is a good idea. Above is a tufted titmouse.

Here we have a slate-colored male juncoe.

And a little sparrow butt.

This is a photo my husband took from his seat is in the breakfast nook.

There’s a high likelihood that the power will go out, and we think we’re prepared. Right now though, it’s really quite beautiful. I took the photo below while sitting on the stone step on our front porch at about midnight last night. I had the ISO (film speed) set really high, hence the noise (grain). It had just begun to sleet.

I’ll check in throughout the day. Hope yours is a safe one, especially if you’re in the path of this latest storm.

All photos taken with a Nikon D80

Love,

I think ya'll are sending it our way. They are saying a possible 2-5 inches in MS Thurs PM/Fri AM.

Snow twice in one year in MS. On no, the end of the world might be at hand.

Dear Kate,
I have been following the news/weather on the net and I can't remember the weather ever being this storm active. I remember an ice storm that lasted a "few" days back in the Mid'90's but nothing like this. Keep warm and do alot of snuggling!!!! Thanks for sharing your beautiful photos. Hugs and Kisses

You guys stay safe and I truly hope your power doesn't go out. Be careful if you must venture outdoors.

We've had just a tiny brush from the edge of your storm. It's sloppy driving but not bad aside from that. Love the wee titmouse.

It has been snowing steadily for two days here, just a light snow, but steady. No power outage here, so we are cozy inside. It is beautiful outside! Stay warm and safe!

You guys have certainly been walluped..we still haven't gotten what they said was coming this way... so I went out and played with the camera in the snow.

I hate when we lose power, hope that's not your fate tonight..mine either! ... stay warm.

All your photos are beautiful,
but my favorites are the little sparrow butt and the Cardinal (after all these years, it still looks like a fairy tale bird to me, such exquisite color).

Stay safe and may the power keep on providing you with all the comforts,
Merisi

It snowed here too all day. I still get nervous when snow is forecast. Still not used to the fact that here we never ever lose power! It seems so unnatural. ;-)
I also have to hold myself back not to run to the grocer when a storm is forecast. ;-)

Wonderful pictures! I love the pudgy red cardinal one!

We have high winds and true blizzard conditions at the moment, and we hope our power stays on too. Stay warm and stay inside!

Kat :)

I like the red canary, too. :-)

We're getting the storm this afternoon, but we plan to be all tucked in, warm and cozy.

Just wanted to pop over Kate and say THANKS for alerting me to my little moment of fame at Ree's place... I had no idea.

Adore your snow stuff but I suspect I am actually starting to FEEL the cold from here (where it is currently 25 degrees Celsius). If you have power, pop over to register the weather at my Weather Watch.

CG, I have been gone all day & am just checking in with bloggyland to find your very early post. Never in my wildest imaginings did I think I would be greeted with ***SPARROW BUTT***

...bowing down in thankfulness for the uproarious laughter that has just descended upon this room...may you never stop bringing up the rear...

ok, I'll stop now ;>P
