Snowbound

It began snowing where I live in Maryland at around 3:30 yesterday afternoon. It was sort of exciting to see the first flakes fall after the news media had been hyping this storm all week. Our governor had already declared a state of emergency.

I wish I could have taken photos of the night. I stayed up late just to see the beauty. Seriously, the sky was pink and the falling flakes were gentle and beautiful. The tree branches were already thick with the new-fallen snow and all was quiet in my world.

This morning, I woke to 30-mph gusts of wind and drifts waist high. My husband and George had already been out with the show shovel, making a path to the barn.

The barn is a nice place to sit and watch the snow falling. You can feel as if you’re outside, yet are protected from the elements.

As I write this, the snow is coming down sideways and the governor has asked that everyone stay inside for at least the next 8 hours. The national guard has been called in and is at work keeping the roadways cleared for emergency vehicles. In some areas of our state, there have already been 30-inches of the white stuff reported. And this is supposed to go on all day.

Rather than venture outside just yet, I decided to take a few photos from the windows. This is out the breakfast nook.

Out the living room window.

The breakfast nook again. There’s my husband and George in the center of the photo. My husband took the snow shovel with him on his walk just in case he encountered a drift too big to walk through, I suppose.

From the bedroom window. The branches that are still snow covered are the ones that are protected from the crazy wind. In some spots, you can still see the ground.

From the bedroom window again, my husband in the center of the photo. This one actually depicts the snow falling.

I don’t mind all this weather and have always enjoyed winter and snow. This is dangerous however, with the winds. We have a plan if power should go out, so I’m okay with it all.

Now that I’m at the end of this post, I hear my guys coming in from the cold. George runs into the living room, excited to see me and I am surprised to see what he’s got trailing all over the place. Huge balls of snow hanging everywhere. Our dog absolutely loves this weather. Can’t get enough of it. But he pays for it later, as depicted by the photo below.

Oh. My. Gosh.

Enjoy your Saturday, all. And to those who are in the path of this storm, stay safe and warm.

Thanks to all who answered my Five on Friday yesterday. I just love reading those answers!

Glad to hear you are ok at this point.
They did lose power around my sister's in PA.

Stay safe and warm. The storm will be heading our way, but at least we know it is coming.

Oi, it's almost Norway conditions...the best thing on days like this, is find all the candles in case of power outage and start a roaring fire..and kick back with a yummy blanket and a good book..
Enjoy the time indoors..

Awww poor George. We just moved to upstate NY from TX and brought our 7lb shih tzu with us. We had some heavy lake effect snow not too long ago and my poor pup came in looking like the Michelin man because of snowballs just like that. She is definitely not used to all the snow so it broke my heart to see that for the first time.

I'm glad you are enjoying the weather and I hope you all keep your power and stay safe. I must say I was a tad bit sad to see that the big snow storm wouldn't be making it's way further north, though!

The storm shifted north of us, but we are still getting our fair share of snow and high winds, but nothing like you guys! My brother just called me from north of Baltimore to say he had 27 inches already and it was still coming down hard. I'm guessing we have maybe 5 or so new inches on top of the snow we had last week and we'll likely get another 3 or 4 before it's over.

Love the pictures and are you sure that George isn't one of my dogs?! We have the same snowball problem!

Your snow pics are gorgeous!!

Glad you are Ok and that you have a plan should the power go out. We got some wind yesterday evening - then more snow last night (couple of inches) Snowing again a bit this morning. Our totals are probably around 10 inches or so - nothing like what you are getting.

what a storm !
only when the national guard gets called in does one realize "wow, this is a real storm after all"....

twice we have lived in areas where the national guard went in and rescued people from their cars, that were then left abandoned on the highways for 24 hours, until crews could plow a way out....such a mess, so scary....and some families wouldn't leave their cars so food and drinks and blankets were brought to them.

I keep watching the reports and the totals "so far"....thinking of you !!

stay safe and warm and enjoy !!!

I love a huge snowstorm and having to hunker down in the house with a roaring fire, a game of scrabble, something luscious cooking on the stove, great music in the background and maybe a glass of port and last, but not least my loved one who keeps us safe and warm. Heaven.

Great photos - I remember picking those snow balls, which often turn to ice balls because of the heat of the body, off of our golden. She would dive into snow drifts as if they were water. How I loved her. Gone too soon.

Stay safe and warm.

Wow, that's a lot of snow. We had some yesterday, then rain and gale-force winds last night. Back to snow today, but it's like starting over because of last night's rain.

Thanks for sharing the photos of this incredible storm. That's a whole lot of snow.

word verification: smendec. Sounds like a canine condition brought on by way too many snow balls.

good lord stay safe up there the first pics are so beautiful then it just looks scarey and cold...its strange here windy COLD and a metallic feel in the air... but no snow or anything like that... its 41ish degrees...

Wowzer! It is beautiful though, isn't it? And it's a nice feeling to be snowed in (as long as the power stays on) -- sort of an enforced slowdown of our crazy busy lives...

Stay warm, stay safe, dear Kate.

We haven't had one little flake - and that disappoints the heck out of me!

Snow is great, especially when you can keep warm inside and only go out when you want to! :)

I am glad you're all okay, I have to admit though, we've had a fairly snow-less winter and I'm slightly jealous of all your white drifts!!

Enjoy being COZY AT HOME!

Oh gosh! That's so beautiful...from inside, of course. It seems so strange to see all your new snow when we have crocuses in bloom and daffodils and tulips almost all the way up! It is like spring here and yet in less than a week, the Winter Olympics begin! lol

this one made me feel it.

Stay warm, and poor George with the iceballs.. my little mutt has feathers, and I cut them this time of year to avoid it... but she can get away with it. It would be sacriligeous to do this to your boy.

WOW! those pictures tell it all, a "thousand words" as they say!! That last photo of George, well that just reminds me of last winter here with our 4 foot snow drifts, and Isla - who adores snow, too! - couldn't get enough. Her belly would look just like that! And she'd also have those snowballs between her TOES! She would just crack-me-up because the toes part really annoyed her, so she'd sit way back on her haunches, hold a back paw up to her snout and YANK them out with such ferocity and kind of SPIT them off to the side...hysterically funny & very very entertaining.

Being snowed in brings a twisted perspective sometimes :>]]

Beauiful pictures! I'm with you. I don't mind a good snowstorm as long as the power doesn't go out. However, we here in N IL have had enough. Come on Spring!

Your pictures remind me of growing up in New England. I miss those snowy days! Enjoy the relaxation and quiet that a snowstorm brings to the world around it.

No snow here. And I think our crack weather team on local ABC are very unhappy. Had we gotten anywhere near what you got three would be round the clock live snow emergency coverage ... for a cosmopolitan city NYC sure gets all drama queen hysterical at the thought of snow ..me? I don't trust this month, its a snow magnet...so I expect we'll get our share soon enough.

Such vicious weather but it certainly makes for beautiful photo's. At least George is enjoying it. Hope he thaws soon.

I can only imagine snow in those proportions and just once in my life I would like to spend a winter of it! This week we're looking at temps in the 30s (thats celsius) so I'll send warm thoughts to all of you snowbound folk.....

The photos are beautiful! It's too bad that such beauty can be so dangerous. For the sake of themselves and the National Guard, everyone should stay home and cook, bake, eat, read, etc. We almost had snow in December and I mentioned that when it snowed when our children were little, I would bake homemade yeast cinnamon rolls. One of our 32 yr old daughters wondered (facetiously)why she didn't remember that! :)

I would enjoy the snow if I didn't have to venture out and had wonderful scenery. ;)

We had a springer spaniel who loved the snow too. She never fetched a ball but loved snowballs. She would get so much snow between her paws that we would have to drag her inside to thaw out.

Thanks for the smile.

First of all, I have to say how much I enjoy your blog. Your pictures and your words are a joy to see & read every day. So thank you! :-)

Second, I have a silly question to ask. Let me 'splain - I live in Orange County, California. I've lived in (or fairly near to)coastal Southern California my entire life. My only experience with snow has been driving to it and then leaving after a short while. As such, I have to ask - how do you clear poor George of the snow balls? Do you wait for them to melt or do they have to actually be removed in some way? Please pardon my ignorance but I love your dog (I'm a fan of his on Facebook) and am incredibly curious.

Thank you from one of your snow ignorant readers. :-)
