The theme for today is red and white

It was a beautiful Sunday here in Maryland. The sun shone down on the land and it was warm enough to sit on the porch without a coat and read for awhile. When I came inside, I made some more salsa for the week and then whipped up some cheese and crackers for a late lunch.

This is my current favorite way to serve cheese and crackers. I have fallen in love with roasted raspberry chipotle and I don’t care who knows it.

I first had this heavenly sauce in CT while visiting friends last weekend, so on a trip to Stew Leonard’s (the most interesting food shopping experience ever) I bought a bottle after Annie pointed it out to me.

I used Carr’s crackers, Philadelphia cream cheese and Fischer & Wieser’s sauce.

While working on photos for this post, I noticed a red and white theme emerging, so I decided to only post photos that have red and white in them. I get weird like that sometimes.

I went to WalMart today to get potting soil, seed starter and some seeds and picked up this fish toy for the black and white. It was a steal at a dollar. We played fetch outside in the snow until he got tired.

More red and white here in these wonderful mittens I received from El and Seamus, relatives who live in Canada. El told me that these mittens were all the rage in Vancouver right now. And they are so warm with their felt lining. They also sent me a thank you card for helping them out with their blog.

Their blog began as a way to chronicle their trip to Morocco over the holidays. Before they left, they had asked me a few simple questions which I happily answered. Then while they were away, I enjoyed seeing the photos and reading about their trip while they were in the midst of it.

More red and white. I’m still sticking with the theme here.

No, wait. Now how did this get in here?

I will tell you what this is if you promise not to freak out, ok?

Longtime readers will know that my husband enjoys bringing things home that he finds on his walks. You can go ahead and click on that link. It’s from two years ago and is all of about two short paragraphs long.

The photo above, if you haven’t already figured it out, is the tail of a rabbit. I want to think that the little bunny lost its tail from getting it stuck on something and is still out there running around somewhere with just this tiny piece of its tail missing. Sort of in a Squirrel Nutkin-way. But it’s more probable that either an owl or a fox got the rabbit and this is all that remains.

Of course, my husband had to bring it home to show me. And it is interesting, and very soft.

This is life in the country. And sometimes I just can’t handle the excitement of it all.

Hope you have a good day, all. Thanks for stopping by . . .

I love all of the red and white and those mittens do look warm.

The poor little bunny, I hope he's at the bunny hospital recuperating, maybe he/she had plastic surgery to replace their little tail? That's what I think.

And that feather your husband found is really beautiful!

Yay for the red and white!! Are you sure you're not a closet Canuck?

Needless to say, we ALL have those mittens in my house, except my husbands don't have the soft white maple leafs on the palms - his were part of his official torch-totin' outfit - and they have white dimples on them, for better grip!

We had some excitement in our part of the country, too -- saw four red-tail hawks on our walk today, and this morning we had an earthquake.

I kid you not -- 2.7 on the Richter scale. How weird is that?

Oh, and I love the red and white theme! :)

I'm sorry, the post was wonderful but my focus was gone after the cream cheese and crackers and some nectar of the gods on top.

I too like to think that the bunny is out there hopping away without it's tail. Anything else would be too sad.

Um, I'm sitting here in Norway before breakfast drooling over those cheese and crackers...um....yum....Oh what I'd give to wander aimlessly around in a store that could be described as a amazing food shopping experience...you lucky dog! And speaking of dog- George looks completely in love with his new toy, what a nice mamma you are!! Oh poor rabbit- there is a video going around facebook you should see- this tiny little mouse goes to a trap with cheese in it, great music playing, then SNAP...next thing you see is this mouth lying under the trap and sad music playing- then suddenly it stops and Rocky music begins and the mouse starts pumping the trap wire like it was weights...you can have a good laugh with that one!
Have a super day!!

I like your red and white theme--nice idea for those days when other thoughts or notions don't quite assemble themselves into blog material (or assemble themselves in a coherent way at all!). The mittens look especially inviting.

I'll email you separately about camera advice--just thought I should alert you!

Have a great day.

Dear Kate,
I have been trying to buy those darn mittens since early December and the websites that sell them have been out since then. The conversation on Oprah, Friday was all about these mittens. People have been standing in line for hours to buy these mittens. It's so silly to be obsessed by these cute red mittens but I can't help myself!!!!! I wan to come for late lunch at your house. Give George a big kiss from Scooby and Cassie. Hugs and Kisses

Oh my...I just want to put my hand right through my computer screen to pick up one of those crackers!! They look so yummy!

Do you use a special lens for close-up pics like these?

I want those mittens! And let me know when you need more sauce!

Those crackers look delicious! I may have to get myself a bottle of that sauce.

P.S. I totally don't find the rabbit tail weird. Actually, I have one that I found when I was still living at home and kept because I couldn't believe the softness of it.

My favorite crackers! You made them look beautiful. And I'm a knitter, so I spotted the Torchbearer mittens. You're lucky to have received them as a gift. Have a great day!

it saddens me to think there is a little bunny runny around your property without its tail.
You scored big time with the mittens! Woot!
I love anything raspberry or blueberry. My all time favorites. Jack loves blueberries, too and calls them boo-berry! Gotta love it.

I hate to say it... we find bunny tails out here frequently. I guess it's the most unpalatable part of the bunny, as far as predators go. :-(
