Rainy day in Maryland

School let out early today because of the threat of flooding. It’s been raining since last night and the rest of the East Coast is getting a pounding.

DSC_0261 copy 2

But all was quiet at my house where, aside from a few downed tree limbs along the 1/3 mile driveway, the steady rain continues to pour. (The photo you see here was taken a year ago at this time).

I went on Netflix in my free time, intending to watch a Tony Curtis movie because I was saddened to hear he’d passed away today. I loved him in Some Like it Hot and ended up putting that movie and Spartacus in my Netflix queue. When I couldn’t find any Tony Curtis movies available in the Watch Instantly choices, I began perusing what was available.

mm_colg_schedule
I decided upon William Hurt and Marlee Matlin in a movie I cannot believe I’d never seen before. It’s Children of a Lesser God, for which Matlin won both the Oscar and the Golden Globe for Best Actress at the age of 21. To this day, she remains the youngest actress to receive the Oscar for that category. What a beautiful and touching film this was and perfect for a rainy day. Filmed in New Brunswick, Canada during the fall, winter and summer, the scenery alone was a work of art.

children-of-a-lesser-god

Hurt plays James Leeds, an energetic and talented new teacher at a school for the deaf where Matlin is employed as a custodian. Leeds finds out that she was a former graduate of the school and was one of their most gifted students, but she has a troubled past. If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend it.

And now, because it’s Friday and because inquiring minds want to know, I have some questions for you . . .

1. What is the most interesting sight within your current field of vision right now? The books on the bookshelves.

2. Have you ever had your initials carved into a tree? In 1976 my boyfriend carved our initials into a tree. I ended up marrying him.

3. Do you call or e-mail your friends and/or family? It depends on who they are. I call a couple and e-mail the rest.

4. What is your favorite mode of travel? (Car, plane, train, etc.) Car! I love a good road trip.

5. Have you ever had a recurring dream? What do you think it meant? In my 20's to early 40's I had a recurring dream where there was a war going on and I spent most of my time sneaking out small bands of people to safety. I was always the hero in this little scenario, except for when we would get caught and I'd always wake up, then try to get back to sleep to finish the dream so I could get everyone to safety.

I have no idea what any of it meant.

4. Favorite mode of travel was the hot air balloon ride we took for our 1st wedding anniversary two years ago.. AWESOME!

5. YES! I had a recurring dream for many years that I was flying/floating over the treetops in the neighborhood where I grew up. The first time I dreamed it was when I realized that I dream in color. Love that dream!

2. Sadly, no. Your answer is so romantic!

3. I email the ones I do not want to speak with and phone the others. For those that do not check or have email - texting works well!

4. Car - so that I can stop and take pictures if the mood or scenery strikes!

5. Yes, about a guy I went to school with and had the biggest crush on. He is still elusive in my dreams and that is too bad for him because I am married to the man of my dreams!

1. The most interesting sight within my current field of vision right now is Ben, my great dane, trying to convince himself that he can fit on his two pillows comfortably. He ate his big one, you see... so right now he has to make due with a rug underneath him and two regular people sized pillows.

2. Have you ever had your initials carved into a tree? a boy carved our initials into the gazebo bench up on the hill at 4-H camp when we were 13, does that count? They were still there 15 years later. I have no idea about today...

4. What is your favorite mode of travel? Horse.

5. Have you ever had a recurring dream? What do you think it meant?
My recurring dream is being lost in a projects-like housing unit in a bad neighborhood at night, and I am thinking "how did I get myself here and how do I get out safely" and I have no idea what it means.

3. Mostly email (not many of us have the 'time' to talk anymore.
4. I love traveling in a car so that you can 'stop to smell the roses'!

Hope the rain stops before it causes undue harm to anyone and anything! A little is great~too much can be devastating!

Have a great Friday and weekend!

2. No initials carved

3. Email mostly, call occasionally - and I try to send actual letters now and again!

4. Car trips are the best! We're getting ready to take one from California to Colorado next week!

5. Recurring dreams - I actually have 2 that seem to occur a lot: First one I'm back in college and can't find my class room; or forget to go to class; or when I'm there I'm not prepared and have no idea what's going on! Have no idea what that one means except maybe I'm clueless?? Second one is I'm moving, and trying to pack up everything and keep discovering hidden rooms, or an attic or a shed where there's even more stuff and the truck is full and I'm in a panic! I think this has to do with moving my mom from Oklahoma to California 5 years ago....she had so-o-o much stuff that it gave me nightmares for weeks!

Can't believe you had never seen Children of a Lesser God. One great movie. Of course, Matlin's expose (with an accent on the e) about how she was treated by Hurt during their relationship while filming the movie is disheartening.

As far as your questions, I have had a couple of recurring dreams throughout my life (now 65 years). I have no idea what they mean and I have not had them for a number of years now but during my young adulthood they haunted me. They had to do with a house with a long corridor and there were evil things at the end of the hallway but I was never able to make it to the end of the hallway. Another had a three-story warehouse with lots of files on shelves from which I could never escape. They were very dark but yet on the outside I was always an outgoing, gregarious person. Weird, huh? I'm just glad I don't have these nighttime visions anymore! They're gone, hip, hip, hooray! Have a wonderful weekend!

1. What is the most interesting sight within your current field of vision right now?
My hubby's antique camera collection.

2. Have you ever had your initials carved into a tree?
Yep! My first boyfriend carved our initials in the tree in front of our house... way back in the 60's. They're still there.

3. Do you call or e-mail your friends and/or family?
Both. My best friend and I email daily and sometimes have three hour phone calls... one wonders what we have to talk about!

4. What is your favorite mode of travel? (Car, plane, train, etc.)
Car - No planes.

5. Have you ever had a recurring dream? What do you think it meant?
I have a recurring dream about living in a huge house on a hill... I'm expecting company and I'm pressed for time to get all the rooms ready for them - anxiety! No idea what it means.

3. Do you call or e-mail your friends and/or family?
call, e-mail, text and facebook!

4. What is your favorite mode of travel? (Car, plane, train, etc.)
It's been a while, but plane. Whatever gets me there the quickest!

5. Have you ever had a recurring dream? What do you think it meant?
I have vivid dreams, but no recurring ones that I can remember

I never do this anywhere else. but you always ask the best questions so I want to play along...

1) A carved wooden humpback whale and calf from when we lived in Hawaii. It hangs above the head of the bed.

2) In a tree no, in a school desk yes.

3) We've started texting...a lot. I love it.

4) My best way to go is a horse, but I also love to drive my husband's pickup.

5) Recurring dream was terrible--a plane crash in our pasture and I was always the only one there to help. Then one night, the plane pulled up at the last minute and didn't crash, and I never had the dream again. No idea what it means, but I'm sure a Freud type would have a field day.

1. Most interesting sight within current vision. A little pile of antique books. They rival the photos of my grandchildren.

2. Initials carved into a tree. Not that I know of, or remember. Maybe I better go do that now! There's planty of trees here.

3. Call or email. Mostly call. (A good friend), Sometimes email, or skype with grandchildren.

4. Fav mode of travel: mostly train. I love the train. But the plane is great if I am wanting to get to visit some of my family. (Even if it does take 24 hours to get to some of them)!!

5. Recurring dreams. Nasty ones, sorry. I keep dreaming I can't wake up, or other horrible things. It actually happens to be a form of epilepsy that happens to me in my dreams/sleep, so that with medication I am mostly free of these awful things now.

A funny dream I just had was that I was looking at an internet order form, and in the place where you put it in the CART...it said BURGLARY instead. Very funny! Very weird cos I don't even use the internet for ordering things!

a couple, but the one I like most is the one where I'm flying free outside and I go under wires and in between buildings and over trees. I love the freedom of that dream. I've looked it up before and it says that you have power over something in your life at that time. go figure!

1. What is the most interesting sight within your current field of vision right now? My office is in the basement, and while it's a squalid, messy hole of a place, the window is at ground level so I can see trees and leaves and OUTSIDE.

2. Have you ever had your initials carved into a tree? No, but I used to ride my bike to a covered bridge and we'd take chalk and write stuff inside on the beams.

3. Do you call or e-mail your friends and/or family? Mostly email, and we don't call each other enough.

4. What is your favorite mode of travel? (Car, plane, train, etc.) I love to drive, I don't mind the Metro train for my daily commute, but there's something that tickles me about boarding a plane in Maryland and getting off in a whole other time zone within a few hours. That's just so cool to me.

5. Have you ever had a recurring dream? What do you think it meant? OH YES, I have a few - one features giant waves along the coast, another used to feature a tornado that I was trying to outrun. I think both happen when I'm feeling overwhelmed.

5. Have you ever had a recurring dream? What do you think it meant?
When I was little I had the same dream three times about each member of my family falling, one by one, out of the car, eventually leaving me to drive. Then, I would go to wherever we were heading and turn around and go back to them. I have no idea what it meant.

3) Both.

4) Horse... though it's been years.

5) More like recurring themes. From time to time I dream that I'm out walking and exploring a city.. or a large house. When I awaken I'm disappointed that I wasn't really there. This morning I was in a Scandinavian country.. exploring and taking great photos of interesting sights and objects including a Danish or Norwegian Monopoly board. When I woke up, I was disappointed that these images didn't exist on my camera. They were going to be great blog fodder. ;)

Other theme dreams:
I often dream that I'm back in the first home I've ever lived. It means I miss those days.. sometimes. I also occasionally dream that I've started smoking again. I think it means the same as the house dreams.

No initials--guess I'm not a romantic!

I do both.

I love traveling by car because I want to see everything! When we traveled by car when I was a kid, my dad paid us a nickel for each white horse we saw to keep us quiet, because if he had to stop the car--well, it was BAD!

Being trapped on an elevator--started when I was 5 yrs. old. I hate enclosed places--claustrophobia I guess.

5. Yes, I have had a recurring dream for years. I am floating in a stream in the bottom of an old dug out canoe, hiding, as I lay there I see trees over head as the canoe floats quietly down the stream. I notice I am wearing an old dress like early settlers of America. I am afraid of discovery.

Very entertaining questions, thank you for the fun!
