Little lost pup

I got up bright and early this morning, knowing that it was dump day here at the Casa de George. Our son would soon be home from his night shift, and he would want to get right at the chore. We loaded up the Element with all the recyclables and the household trash and headed 20 minutes away, my son chatting the whole trip (which is nice) while we listened to a CD he’d just downloaded that he thought I would like.

I always like vintage Van Morrison. And I was deeply touched at his gesture.

When we got home, he heard something whimpering under the patio bushes and came running inside to ask for my help.

A pit bull mix puppy with an injured leg is what came from under the bushes at my son’s coaxing, and while we waited for Animal Control (no kill) to come and collect him, we fed and watered the friendly little boy, my son petting and comforting him the whole time.

The photo above was taken with my son’s iPhone 5.

The photo below was taken with my Samsung Galaxy S4.

No editing was done to either photo.

I’m just putting that out there ~

The sweet little thing continued to whimper, but after its belly was satisfied (we didn’t give too much), he calmed some and began to lick my son’s hands.

I took a photo of the dog and went to the neighbor’s houses – you may have heard me mention the gun people and their lovely neighbor’s – the dirt-bike people? Well, I got there by going down our drive, out the lane, round the side of the hill and up their little road only to find that no one seemed to be awake at 9 on a Saturday morning. This was probably a good thing, in retrospect because I hadn’t been there for at least a couple of years after the time I went to discuss the dirt bike issue. I stayed close to my car, calling them and beeping the horn a few times. But I quickly left, thinking that even if they did own this dog, this is no place that it should be living.

I don’t understand how people can live with trash and crap strewn over all their lawns and their driveways chock-a-block with rusted out cars. I don’t ever plan on going there again. It gave me the creeps, and it still gives me the creeps knowing that they’re just on the other side of the woods from here . . .

Right on the other side of where the Animal Control truck is in the photo below.

Bye-bye, Marvin. (My son was calling him this).

The kind Animal Warden came fairly quickly to collect the injured pup, saying that there was no way that the dog could have come from our illustrious neighbors because it was too well-cared for. He did a micro-chip search which came up negative, and will take the dog to the vet he uses and try to either find its owners or a forever home.

So how are things in your neck of the woods?

and ps – I like the Samsung photo better. Sorry, iPhone.

Animals seem to know where safe haven is. Frankly, I wouldn't have made any attempts to put any animal in the hands of the sort of people you describe. I'm glad he's in good hands and on his way to a full recovery and, hopefully, a happy home.

You've burst my bubble of the idyllic spot on the hill. *smile*

We got our first family dog from a place like you describe...she was the only one who survived the horror of having been born where she was...her mother would come to visit her and we always welcomed her and fed her...that poor creature was run over by a car one day and we mourned her sweet spirit for ages. Our dog lived with us through the boys' growing up years and when she left us...we had many happy memories to get us through. Her name was Snuffy! That was one lucky pup to find you and your son this day...hope he has a happy life now.

What a coincidence this is, Kate!
My daughter found an injured pit mix last night at about 8:30. Unfortunately, the dog warden was VERY rude, and told her she had no business touching the dog, and that she should have just let it go. I am still furious, and you can bet that I will be speaking with that dog warden on Monday. Sure glad you had a much better experience with "Marvin," and I hope he finds a good home.

Oh Marvin is soooo adorable! I'm surprised your son didn't say "can we keep him Ma, can we can we?" Glad he is in safe hands and hope his owners (if they are nice) find him - or that he finds another good home :)

Poor guy. You're fortunate you ACC is no-kill. Ours in Maricopa County, AZ is not :(

Your house looks like it is in the most fabulous neighbourhood, being so beautiful. Obviously everywhere has its problems!

Poor pup. Pit Bulls are banned here but there are so many cross breeds in the animal shelters. If you go through their web pages, at least half the dogs up for adoption have either pit-bull or Staffordshire Bull Terrier in them. It's so sad.

Oh geez, my daughter is in Newark visiting friends, thank goodness she doesn't read your blog or she would be there to get Marvin!!! Glad you all found him and I hope he finds a more loving home than the one he left. I bet George told him to come your way, that you would help him.

xo Kat

P.S. I like your phone pic better too.

That breaks my heart. I had 5 abandoned dogs at one time because I live in an economically depressed part of the state (if you saw Winter's Bone you get the picture). They were all the best dogs you'd ever want. Since I seem to like animals more than people, you can imagine my sense of rage at how terribly some people treat their animals. God's blessings to Marvin.

Dogs always know safe havens. I once rescued a wolf mix who showed up at my door in the eve of Hurricane Ivan. He was covered with cacti, and terrified. I'd never seen him before, yet he let me pull cacti spines out of his feet and mouth without biting my face off. Every so often he would wince and step around the corner for a few minutes before coming back. I like to think he was too much of a gentleman to want me to hear him cuss. After the hurricane passed, I took him to my vet and re-homed him with a friend who had recently lost a husky. The dog had heartworms, but survived the treatment and is now fat, healthy & happy.

Awwwww...... Good on you for taking such good care!

I used to travel to kids' homes got PT and I've been to "that house" many a time. I am always amazed at the filth people create. It is one thing to be poor and have dilapidated conditions, but that is different than trashy filth. I did missions in Guatemala City dump and there was this one lady who kept her hovel neater than I'll ever have my house.... And she lived at the dump. But unfortunately there is no cure for stupid.

I'm due for a new phone..... Hmmmmmmmmm.......

Didn't George want a friend?? they kind of matched. What a cutie.
yes, some people don't deserve to have a dog, it's sad.

Your phone definitely captured better skin tone. I hope the pup finds a good home. George didn't want a playmate to keep him exercised during the day?

I do hope somebody claims him. I am a sucker for pups like this - I can hardly bear to let them go. How can anyone ill treat such a little sweeties?

Kate, you and your son have great big, caring hearts! In March, we 'adopted' a 4 month old mixed breed from a rescue foundation and we just love her...even though she is a 'sneaky street dog' with a super-sensitive nose. I hope Marvin will find his forever home with a family as caring as yours!

I do wonder where the dog came from. Sorry you have those kind of neighbors. At least they don't bother you too much. So glad the rescue group is a non kill. You did a good thing.

He knew where to hide...people who were kind and loving and would take care of him. I am so glad he didn't belong to those people across the woods...

I liked your phone's photo best too Kate. And I am glad the poor doggie is being cared for!

I do home he gets a good forever home. Sounds like a very good thing that he didn't wander up to the other folks homes. No telling what would have happened to him.

What a beautiful pup! He may have been the neighbor's NEW pup, hence the injured paw and roaming away. *sigh* Glad you called animal control instead of connecting with those neighbors.

What a sweet looking puppy! He is a lucky boy to have found just the right place to look for refuge:)

That Samsung photo looks better to me too...a friend just got some kind of Samsung Windows phone and the photos it takes are incredible! When my contract runs out....

poor baby, I hope they find the poor pup's home. We've had rain the past two days. What a glorious sight! our temps have been in the 80's. unheard of here in Oklahoma in July. We are not complaining. It's been nice and we are definitely enjoying it.

Poor little pup. He is adorable. I was laughing out loud at the description of your neighbors. Sounds like a sit-com.

Aw, I hope he finds a happy home.

Oh sweet puppy face. I have a sneaking suspicion that someone who knows how well George is cared for has dropped this wee darling off in hopes that you would do the right things for him. And of course, you did. Thank you to you and your boy for that. My (older) Samsung takes terrible photos. I need an upgrade!

Oh man...poor Marvin. I know your son would liked to have kept him...in some ways! I'm glad you stopped and got him to a No Kill shelter---that'[s the Kate I "know"!
Hope things are play with you--you're on my mind so much! We're at our son's--his family has gone to the Head for a week, and he needed his mom and pop here to look after him! He's going through a lot of stress with the project he's on---a billion dollar project for his plant--so please pray that it comes in on time. It's driving him up the wall. To have my son call and ask if we'd come BEFORE his family even left, --it just broke my heart!
<3 God bless you, Katie!
