October redux

It’s Saturday night at the manor house on the hill and I don’t know what you’re up to but I’m enjoying my evening. It’s quiet here, but more often than not, a big gust of mild October wind blasts through the window I have open in the living room. I’m listening to music on a cloud player on my laptop and watching old episodes of The Big Bang Theory while I sip a glass of Kris pinot grigio.

All of the photos in this post were taken in October during the years we’ve lived at the manor house.

Currently, the trees aren’t quite to this stage yet but I can see it coming.

My {young, cute, hip} hairdresser turned me on to this cool tune. It’s really appropriate for the season and I love the catchy tune.

I love this!

If I sound happy, I must admit that at this moment, I actually am. But the truth is that it comes and goes and frankly, it’s a huge curve. When I see beautiful things, I want to cry because my husband isn’t alive anymore to see them. And when I see beautiful things, I want to cry because they make me happy.

What the what.

I live in a beautiful place.

And I’m so glad I captured these images throughout the years.

This was left at the table for me one day when I came home from work. I took a picture of it for posterity’s sake.

I went out to dinner with dear old friends one evening this week. I was surprised to find out that I am, apparently, a kick-ass apple pie maker. And my pumpkin/apple pie is a close second. I was actually blushing.

But seriously, if you want to make an excellent couple of pies that will astound your friends, and gain the respect of your enemies while you’re at it, here are the recipes, straight from Farm Journal’s Country Cookbook, 1972.

I usually put a heart in my pies, but I also like using cut leaves. Got the leaf cutters at Williams-Sonoma years ago. The metal ones are better than the plastic ones.

Your photos are beautiful, Kate. Some catchy lines there, too. You do live in a beautiful place. I have always thought that. It's good to read that you are keeping busy. You sound good. I hope George is doing ok, too. I know that animals do miss their people. Take care. Deb

You do sound happy at this moment. Our leaves have a ways to go yet...not sure they will be dramatic this year and we seem to be getting our September rain on October. I need to teach myself to make pie.

Thank you, Kate. I am glad that you are finding happy moments that can carry you through your grief and sadness. The fact you feel sad that he can't see the beautiful things with you tells me you had a beautiful life together.
And I love your quote about photography and I love that you included your quote with the likes of Ansel Adams. You rock.
Thanks for sharing your fall images with us :)

Kate, I am so glad you are having some happy moments. That is exactly as it should be. It is natural to feel the entire variety of emotions, sadness, happiness, loneliness, relief and many more.
Sounds like an awesome cookbook. Thanks for the recipes.

Love all your photos Kate, esp. the leaves. I love fall and leaves and apples and crisp weather. The song you shared is awesome. I know it's a tough time emotionally, sounds like you're doing the best you can and I bet George is taking good care of you. Hugs my friend and thanks for the link to the pie recipes, I love to make pies, in fact today I made an Amish Vanilla Pie. Hugs!!

So glad you have these images, that's why I love photography, it allows you to collect memories outside your head. Since we are gluten free, I haven't made a pie in ages, but I may have to change that and attempt a gluten free crust. Enjoy the rest of your evening!

Big Bang Theory and Kris Pino? Pretty good evening in my book. Fall is probably my favorite season. So much color; leaves changing, sunrises & sunsets seem to be so much more vivid. enjoy your evening on the hill Kate.

These are all lovely images and I'm loving the collection of quotes. I also love that you snuck one of your own profound musings in there.

I'm so glad to hear that you're beginning to find your centre again and that you're being gentle with yourself and honouring the feelings you're experiencing and that you're getting out and enjoying life with friends.

I can also vouch for your apple pie recipe. Yummy!

Blessings, Kate.

That first photo just took my breath away. I lived in Maryland for five years, and I grew to cherish my Maryland autumns. Thanks for bringing back some lovely memories.

I'm with Arnold Newman and Jim Richardson when it comes to photography and that Kate Young -- who ever she is??!!

As far as subject matter, for me the brilliant red leaf wins hands down and as it should be, Miss Blackie secures second place.

Glad you are having some happy moments---Autumn is such a beautiful season and I love your photos! I use pie crust mix too because it never fails. I just bought a bag of beautiful tart MacIntosh apples which I will use to make that pie. (I collect vintage cookbooks because they really knew how to cook by scratch)! I just ate one of those apples--it was good!

I made your pie last night.. and OMG it is truly the best ever, and not hard to make!... it's all gone today, a big hit with my family and it shall grace our Thanksgiving table.

As for photography... so true, it's not the camera.. it's the eye of the beholder.

Hi, Thanks for the wonderful autumn photos. And I love the quotes. Good to see a photo of Miss Blackie, too. Usually the only time of year I bake is now. I need to try that apple pie. That feather is so beautiful. What type of bird would that be?

Kate, your photos are great, your world is similar to mine in Indiana. Fall is so heartbreakingly lovely. Thank you for reminding me that it is ok to be happy after such a loss as we have had. Being torn as to what I should be feeling. Good to know delight in nature is still a part of me. I'm hoping you can respond by email now. I attempted to make corrections. Hedy

I like that song, too, but... I don't GET it. Is it really just about how it's cold and "stick your hands in the holes of my sweater", or is it something more? Hmm. I don't know.
