It’s early Saturday as I write this. I thought I was going to the county dump this morning, but my husband decided he’d do the job after his normal routine of getting the car completely packed with recycling and household trash. He does a grand job at this, and when his bit is done, it’s mine to take it to the dump and unload it all. After I let out a secret cheer at not having to go, I walked around the backyard a little bit with my camera and my cup of coffee, then came inside to savor the quiet.
Not that it isn’t always quiet here.
And right away, I thought, “I should be vacuuming!” You see, my husband can’t stand the sound of the vacuum. Don’t go thinking that it’s because of the brain surgeries he’s been through because it’s not, really. He’s always been this way. I’m not complaining about it, but it does make it rather difficult to complete the task when he’s in the house. It’s one of the reasons I bought a Miele (they have a quiet setting).
I’m not vacuuming, though. I’m going to savor my coffee while I slowly wake up and enjoy the peace and quiet outside with George, the kitty, and the birds that come to the feeders.
It’s been a busy week at my job trying to get ready for school to start on the 27th, and I made a lot of progress, so this weekend, I'm just going to try and relax.
And maybe I'll even get some vacuuming done ~
See you later.
The photo was taken earlier this month when the hostas were in bloom.

My husband always leaves the house and goes outdoors when I vacuum. He doesn't like the sound of it. It's one of the reasons he balks at letting me have a Central Vac system. So, I too try to vacuum when he's not around. Must be a man thing or something.
Oh boy heres another vote toward it being a 'Man Thing'. My hubby is the same way. Been married 23 years and its always been that way, he cannot stand the sound of the vacuum so i always work around that and vacuum when he is not home. Such a small thing really but it can be inconvenient at times.
You mention recycling and i think how he has changed over the years...he helps me remember the shopping totes....and really although he can care less i have to smile whenever i see him through a can or bottle into the recycling..'Old dogs can learn new tricks'(and i mean that in the kindest possible way) :) Now he tells me i 'ruined him' because whole milk tastes awful now (we drink 1% for years), regular potato chips taste greasy, and he doesn't mind when i use ground turkey in place of hamburger....
I'm glad you got a break from the dump and recycling! A break from the norm is so nice! Hugs! deb
I just hate to vacuum. The oldest girl always hated the sound but now she is a fanatic about vacuuming!
Have a quiet and peaceful Saturday!
There are just some sounds people do not like . like for instance I cant stand the sound of a high pitch squeal it hurts my ears . Lovely photo hope you get the R&R you deserve this weekend ! Have a good day !
Hard to believe we're talking about the start of school already. *sigh* But I won't mind the fall weather this year... the humidity is ridiculous!
I've never heard of someone not liking the sound of a vacuum, but based on other comments, it seems pretty common...who knew?! That photo is dreamy, and I hope you enjoy your solitude!

Ha, I have to vacuum today, too. Our old one conked out last week and we just picked up the new one today, so our house is pretty furry right now. But, yes, sitting on the deck on this rainy day with a cup of coffee is definitely preferable!
Shirley Conran once said' Life's too short to stuff a mushroom', so I am saying to you that life's too short to do some vacuuming when it is a lovely morning, the birds are singing and you can enjoy the garden.
My baby hosts are blooming for the very first time, but nothing so spectacular as THAT. And of course, your photo is spectacular as well.... :-)
I like to vacumn...actually it's the only cleaning chore I do like. And, since I'm alone, there's no one to complane about the noise BUT my vacumn is currently sitting in the dining room. It's been there for about 2 weeks. Maybe it's waiting for dinner? Enjoy the peace and may it follow you through the weekend!
My husband has a sleep disorder which results in unpredictable sleep patterns. So of course, if I plan to vacuum -he's asleep. And since he really needs his sleep whenever he can get it - I try to be quiet - so I can't vacuum. The nice thing about it, if I ask, he will help with the vacuuming ... and he's really good at it.
gorgeous pic!
m ^..^
i'm sorry to be laughing, but i'm picturing you grabbing the vacuum and vacuuming the the entire house in retaliation when andrew does or says something to make you made....sorry.
and since i'm not a coffee drinker, you made me think of the new tea i just bought and drank while i walked around our house....it's almond cookie flavored and oh lord, mixed with my vanilla flavored tea it was heavenly.
happy sunday sweet friend !!
Oh Kate .... this is lovely! It reminds me of a Ballerina :)
Very pretty image!
Toonman vacuums in our house .. not often enough but .. hey if I complain, he will tell me to do it myself ..
What a pretty image, Kate. I'm not a big flowers of Hosta flowers but they can photograph so pretty. Love the faded softness.
Luckily my husband does most of the vacuuming.
"Savoring the quiet" doesn't always imply that the house is otherwise noisy. It just is code for "enjoying the space all by yourself". From One Who Knows All About That. xo ;o)
Strange but true that I don't like the sound of someone else vacuuming...when I'm doing it, it doesn't bother me at all! Glad you relaxed with your coffee though, we need to listen to our internal nudgings more often! xo ~Lili
