When we arrived, I saw several birds sitting on the dock.
I have never seen a cormorant out of the water before.
One misty, moisty morning,
When cloudy was the weather,
I chanced to meet an old man clothed all in leather.
He began to compliment, and I began to grin,
How do you do, and how do you do?
And how do you do again?
When cloudy was the weather,
I chanced to meet an old man clothed all in leather.
He began to compliment, and I began to grin,
How do you do, and how do you do?
And how do you do again?
~ Old English Nursery Rhyme
The fog seemed to blanket the area in quiet.
And as I slowly made my way down the dock, one of the birds took flight.
And he was followed by a seagull.
Low tide coming.
“Let us go in; the fog is rising.”

Digging for clams, I suppose.
Hello.
Ode to the Element
If I could write poetry,
I would write something here.
But alas, I cannot.
I don’t even dare.

Thanks for stopping by today ~
hope you enjoyed the photos.
ps - thank you to L, for letting me know that the two birds were cormorants and not loons,
as I had originally thought.

I am impressed and envious of those loom photos........just seeing them....awesome.
Do loons hang out in salt water???? I thought they were only on fresh water ponds....shows ya what I know.
Your images are your poetry.
ADORE that second photo in particular... DIVINE! (You are making me shout here). Love the way you see the world.
:-)

We were there last week too!! LOL!!! Love your photos, they are beautiful!
Welcome home and thanks for the beautiful misty images. The one with the 2 loons and the 2 seagulls on the dock...beautiful my friend!
Kat
That second picture is awesome, the loons as mirror images of each other, black against the misty background, gorgeous :)
You take the most PHENOMENAL photos!
Brenda
These are beautiful. I have never seen a loon out of water either. They are quite beautiful. Thanks for sharing. Deb
oh kate....
these are simply heavenly !!
and i have never seen a loon out of the water either and probably would have wondered what that bird was, never thinking it could be a loon.....and whoa, they were way out of the water !!
i love that you have let us be on your trip with you....vicariously of course, but still with you.....and the photo with the american flag....wow !!!
hugs
How did you get those birds in the second shot to pose for you!! :)
Beautiful, Kate!
Are you sure those are loons? To this Pacific Coaster they look like cormorants....
Fabulous pictures and lovely to see birds we don't have in the UK!
Good morning Kate!
What you have there are Cormorants, not Loons. They hang out on docks and rocks all the time. I even see them up river in the brackish water down by Exeter. Cool birds!
Love that second shot! The morning fog along the coast is something to be treasured. I hope your vacation holds wonderful memories : )
Cormorants! Silly me. Thanks for pointing it out, everyone ~~

Beautiful pictures! I can almost feel the mist on my skin!
I just love the first bridge/birds picture. So very cool. Looks like such a nice time spent.
....oh, the flag waving in the mist~...and the cormorant photos are wonderful. We have some around here too, and I always assumed they were loons.
To me it doesnt matter if they are loons or not, its a awesome photo . how did you get them to pose so nicely like that? Slipped them a couple of herring?
all great shots!
What a beautiful place of peace and healing it seems there. Thank you for sharing.
Love the photos...
I love fog, and your lovely series of photographs. Shot #2 is stunning; another one for your shop!
Birds, flags and a little George ... a few of my favorite things. Great photos!
The photo of the clam digger with the flag is fantastic ... they all are, of course, but that one is my favorite today.
Ah Kate...... my heart skips a beat....my tummy does flip flops ..... these are amazing :)
Love these esp. the one where the birds posed so perfectly for you. Beautiful!
Kate--these photos are spectacular! They really capture Maine in the fog. Cormorants are often mistaken for loons by folks not accustomed to coastal birds. Readers may be interested to know that cormorants are diving birds. They float low in the water and then dive under to feed on fish. The longer they are in the water, the lower they ride on the surface. The reason for this is that the microscopic structure of the feathers allows for 'wetting', which in turn allows for deeper and longer dives. Periodically, they need to get out of the water and perch somewhere with their wings outspread. This helps to dry the wing feathers. Ducks and gulls and other water birds rely on an oil gland which they stimulate to oil their feathers with their beaks. Cormorants, however, just "hang out".
There is something about fog that is so calming and romantic...Wonderful photos Kate...every single one!
Love that second shot ... you do Maine so well! Love seeing it through your eyes!
All of these shots are so beautiful Kate! Love how the cormorants and gulls posed for you in the fog. xo ~Lili
