Total George overload

I have been having a rough time of it lately and the only reason I’m telling you this right now is because our dog is so often my saving grace lately. Troubles come and go, as we all know ~ and no matter who we are, none of us are exempt, are we?

So in my melancholy mood on this beautiful Saturday afternoon in September, I set up my chair and table under the dogwood tree out back and took my knitting basket with me. I’d just been to the yarn shop and bought some beautiful skeins and a beginner’s pattern for a lacy scarf that’s knit on circular needles which I happened to have in the right size. But I couldn’t understand the easy pattern instructions and found myself becoming really frustrated (which was ridiculous), and before I knew it, I was in tears.

Over a knitting pattern? Seriously?

I haven’t cried in a long time and I loathe self-pity, but I must have needed it and I’m glad to have it out of my system for now. But the fact of the matter remained that I still couldn’t understand the simple pattern. So I went in the house, found an old project I’d set aside last year, and began the calming, repetitive motions which soon began to help.

I’ll figure it out later, or google it or something.

I detest feeling sorry for myself, especially when I have so much to be thankful for.

And this dog is one of my biggest reasons.

The mailman came up the drive earlier that day with a box for my husband from REI. Inside was new pair of boots for him and a warm shirt, plus a little something for his best friend.

I took note that there was nothing for me in the box, but that’s really ok. Because the last time something came for me, I might have been a little offended. I remember writing about it here.

Night comes early

But this ball on a string is hands-down George’s favorite toy ever.

I had to run in for the camera and get some shots of his happy face.

We played fetch for nearly two hours (with plenty of breaks in-between) while I sat there knitting and throwing.

Throwing and knitting.

And he fetched.

And rested.

And posed for portraits.

And had a grand ‘ole time.

* sigh *

If you have a dog who loves to play fetch, I highly recommend this tug ball. And it’s currently 60% off at REI. Here’s the link ~

I guess we all have times when we feel down. I hope you find a way to your happiness.

George has a good life. Our dogs have never been interested in fetch or toys. Isn't that odd? Zoey loves sticks she finds around the property and loves to drag rugs outside. I guess those are her toys:-)

Our Rowdy is the ball hound in this house. He could play throw toss, catch retrieve for hours on end. As for Izzy, well... she just walks around with the ball in her mouth. Like most girls, she does not understand the concept of playing ball.. well, at least I don't.

It's okay to shed a tear. Have not done it in a very long time, probably when one of our dogs died a couple of years ago.

As for a package arriving with nothing inside for me? happens all the time. I find if I want a gift it's best just to order it myself... Christmas I get a few things, but only if I send him the link to 'exactly' what I want. LOL MEN! I swear.....

It's hard enough for me to just knit -- I can't imagine knitting AND throwing!! I would never get past the first row!! In my book that makes you EXTREMELY talented!!
Hope your week-end is getting better:))

Oh, love the George overload - he is so lovely!! I can understand why he is your best cure for feeling down. I hope you're feeling better. Horses are always my cure and always helps.

Tears come when they are needed ... sometimes the trigger has nothing to do with the emotions that the tears are meant to cleanse away. Stuff builds up. We are good at carrying on and pushing things below the surface, but they are always there whether we are conscious of them or not. It takes a good cry (or a screaming fit) to purge the backlog.

In between fits, it's good to concentrate on the positive and be thankful for our blessings. It's obvious to all who come here that George, and your dear husband, count among the greatest of your blessings. Through your eyes, I have come to love George, too.

Ruby and Daniel send their best wishes ... and Ruby thanks you for the suggestion of a fetching toy. Her tennis ball on a string had an unfortunate encounter with the lawn mower, and we have been at a bit of a loss ever since.

Hugs dear friend,we all shed tears at times, a way to cleanse the melancholy away.

Say Hi to George, and yes the toy is highly recommended, Watson loves it!

Hi Kate, I agree with the above comments, tears are often just a release of stress and don't mean that we are not grateful for the blessings in our lives.

I am so glad George is there with you and brings you joy... i know he brings joy to your readers! Man, that sweet face!

Sending hugs and prayers that you will feel more at peace soon!

My Willow is ball CRAZY!! She can't even pee without her ball, I'm not kidding. She was getting a bit snappy with it though, so I taught her how to play two-ball fetch. I throw one, she gets it and brings it back, drops it and I throw the one I have in my hand before picking up the one on the ground. That way, no one gets their fingers nipped and the play can continue unabated. She loves it, I love it, everybody's happy.

Sorry to hear you've been struggling. I've been experiencing some of that as well and had a good cry last night. Sometimes, it's just the bodies way of letting go of built up stress. I let myself feel the feelings without reproach and it seems to pass pretty quickly. Hope you feel better about things soon!

Ofttimes a good cry is what's needed to clear the decks, to give us strength, purpose and, mostly, clarity to continue the march. It's not weakness, it's self-preservation. It wasn't the knitting pattern being cried over; it was the culmination of events. But you know that -smile-. There have many, many days...weeks, even, if it hadn't been for my animals, I would have lost the most important battle of all. Myself. Yes, counting blessings does help; so very often, so does a good sob.

George is so like our Border Collie, Annie. She too loves her Ball and for it to be thrown over and over and.. and she loves to tug at things. I should check this out. They do have a way of making us feel better don't they?

Animals are the best therapists, tonic, medicine . . . you name it. Glad you have George. Glad I have my critters. And today my husband gave the go-ahead on a horse I want, a horse to call my own again!

We all needa good cry now and then and it doesn't mean you are feeling sorry for yourself!! Even though things could always be worse and we have a lot to be thankful for doesn't mean pain our dfsadness isn't legitimate. It's just that remembering the things we are thankful for keeps us from a never ending spiral downward..... And I'm thankful for you that you have George as your rescue dog!!! And I am thankful for me that you have chosen to share him with us!

Even though I'm not a "dog person," I always love the pictures of George! It would be fun to play with him.

As for your frustration with knitting, have you gone on the Ravelry website (www.ravelry.com)? It is a terrific source of information and a great community. I've learned how to do lace knitting, and while it is a slow process, I'm amazed at how far I've come.

God definitely knew what He was doing when he created animals like dogs and cats; their theraputic qualities are beyond measure!

Give George an extra pat for me! <3

He is a beautiful and happy looking guy. It's hard to look at his photo and not smile so I'm sure in person (in dog), it would be impossible.

Hope things get better soon.

I'm sorry you're dealing with some prolonged blues, Kate. I hope that your worries ease soon.

George, on the other paw, looks deliriously happy. I wish Benny would fetch. He chases and keeps .. and we have to fight him to regain control of whatever he has just caught. Either that, or trick him by keeping another toy ready to throw. He'll immediately drop the one he has for the other one. He's such a fish!

oh i know those tears and the feeling once they're all out of your system.....and just so you now, i've been thinking of you.

god bless george. dogs really are lifesavers aren't they ???

and those photos of him....i swear i can see him smiling even with that ball in his mouth :)

Sending love to you all and thank you for memories of BLue and the ball-on-a-string. It was also one of her favourite toys and you can throw it so much further than a ball-without-a-string. So why oh why did she always take it away to gnaw in private at that string until it came off? She just couldn't bear that silly string thing. Then....after it was gone....she was sorry to have just another boring old ball.
that's collies! Kate X

This is odd---tonight I was again looking at your lovely youtube videos--mostly of Maine, and thinking you had not posted George pics too much lately --plus--I was looking up circular sock-knitting videos, as well! What's THAT about? Which one of us has ESP!

youtube is a great place to get knitting help, by the way. Sure would like to see your project soon!

You know...we all need a good cry now and again. Although I have found myself crying a lot more than usual lately. Oh well...pity party for one! I too have so much to be grateful for...but you know we all have different struggles and can't compare them. So cry when you want to.

And as far as knitting goes...lol...I can't even go there...I'd be in full on frustrated tears just looking at the needles! Lol

Trying to knit would make me cry. I can barely crochet and it only uses one needle.

I'm sure the people at the yarn shop can help you. The more you knit the more they sell.

Sir George is enough to brighten away the blues from any day.

I'm a firm believer in the therapeutic value of tears. Lol. And some furry love is great, too. George is such a handsome fellow!

(((Hugs for you))). I've loved seeing your beautiful pictures this past week. Please know I've been thinking about you, even when I don't always comment. xoxo

They aren't called our best friends for nothing, right? He sure puts a smile on my face.

Sometimes, you just need a good cry. It might not fix anything, but the release really helps. I usually pull out a sad movie when I am in a mood, just to get it all out of my system.

Life is hard sometimes. Sometimes, a lot of the time. Sending hugs to you today. xo

George is such a sweet heart and so glad that ball was not an XXL like those pajama bottoms or you'd be rolling it to George! I can relate somewhat to your mood...since my mom fell about 10 days ago, I've been at my wits end and everything seems to be so overwhelming. There are so many days I just want to stay in bed. Thank God I have a job to go to and my camera. They are saving me from insanity. Please stay sane, put one foot in front of the other and keep the faith!

I know what you mean on having one of those days! What about one of those months!! But there are people with worse things going on in their life than mine, so I suck it up and chalk it up to one of life's many experiences!
George looks like a good companion to have around on such occasions. There is something about a pet that makes one forget about their worries!

Oh, been there with tears myself. Sometimes we just need to let the tears flow not understanding their cause.
Nothing like the love of a dog to make us feel better! Love that George. Great shots! Better days are ahead my friend, better days!

He's gorgeous. They are such a comfort aren't they. Beautiful shots of him. I do hope you work things out if it's possible and if not, that you can find a way with it. I have something that I can't change and I get the tears over the knitting, or whatever it is, very often, so my thoughts are with you. x

We have a red heeler that is ball crazy! I just might have to check out that toy, she just might love it!

I struggled this summer with some things that I have kept mostly private. At one point the smallest of things seemed to push me to tears! Hang in there...and feel better soon!
