All quiet on the Eastern front

For the past several days, we’ve been getting dire warnings about the impending storm that’s coming our way. We’ve had some severe weather in the past, and this hurricane could really be something big, something unique.

I think we’re prepared, and there’s just some odds and ends I have to go out for tomorrow that I neglected to do today. But one thing I did accomplish today is to take some images of the property before most of the leaves are gone.

These were all taken with my 60mm macro lens and edited with Florabella actions and some assorted textures, most of which came from Jerry Jones at Shadowhouse Creations.

I spent part of the day taking pictures and editing them, rather than cleaning.

I look at my images, and ask myself if I would rather have a clean house.

Or look at these lovely images.

And the answer is that I would rather have a cleaning person.

I cried over beautiful things knowing no beautiful thing lasts.

The field of cornflower yellow is a scarf at the neck of the copper sunburned woman, the mother of the year, the taker of seeds.

The northwest wind comes and the yellow is torn full of holes, new beautiful things come in the first spit of snow on the northwest wind, and the old things go, not one lasts.

I love that this has looked pretty much the same since 1810.

The clouds rolled in overnight, and it was fairly quiet early this morning when I left to get the new car serviced for its first oil change. I can’t believe it already has over 3,900 miles on it and is only two months old.

I wish our mail was delivered to the box you see in the photo above. They stopped doing that years ago when the people who lived here passed away.  But I like seeing the mailbox there.

I figured today might be my last chance to get any autumn color. Tomorrow the winds are supposed to pick up a little, and it’s difficult using a macro lens on leaves that are blowing, you know.

A woodland in full color is awesome as a forest fire, in magnitude at least, but a single tree is like a dancing tongue of flame to warm the heart.

I hope that if you live in the States and you’re in the path of this hurricane, that you’ll be safe. I’ll keep you posted from this end – here at the head of the Chesapeake Bay.

Hope you enjoyed my images today ~

Until later, my friends . . .

I'm glad you didn't clean so that we could enjoy these beautiful images. I decided that I will have lots of time to clean over the next few days when I'm locked inside, but I would rather have a cleaning person too! I hope the manor stands strong against the storm as she has for so many years!

Stay safe!

I am certainly glad that the cleaning took a back seat to the photography - absolutely gorgeous! Stay safe and dry these next few days. ~chris

Yes, our colorful leaves will soon be gone, either slowly or in one fail swoop by hurricane force winds. Either way, they disappear each year. So glad you took the time to get some photos before that nasty Sandy arrives!

Fantastic, as always! Stay safe, all of you.

I'm with you on wanting a "cleaning person." These lovely images will last, and the cleaning just has to be done over and over again.:)

Stay safe, Kate!

All so lovely. Words and photos. Praying you are safe and the storm is not too bad. Blessings.

I think learning to enjoy your own time is so necessary. Cleaning is highly overrated.

Very lovely photos. I can't pick a favorite.

I hope you all come through the storm just fine.

Lyrical autumn images, CG!

i snapped the last pictures of fall foliage in the Smoky Mountains today. Mostly beautiful reds.

I hope the storm decides to head out to sea, after all. A little sad that I have to cut my trip to the south short. May everybody in the storm's path stay safe,
Merisi

Beautiful autumn colours. What does cleaning matter when you can capture images such as this.
We are hearing about your hurricane and how it might meet a storm and thus become even more disastrous, with high tides too. I do hope things are not as bad as they are predicted to be. I shall be thinking of you.

I think a lot of us photography folks were out there yesterday capturing the last of the leaves. Your photos are beautiful & serene...so glad you shared them.

Good luck through the storm...I'm hunkering down in Northern Virginia...it's eerily quiet here, but not for long.

lovely.... we are not getting much color down here as it has been so stinkin' hot until yesterday. So thanks for sharing yours!

yes... I would rather have a cleaning person :) My mom came through town yesterday and gave me some "Maria money" so I can get my house cleaned properly; I know a lovely woman named Maria that is a dear and knows how to really get things cleaned. Too bad I can't have her on a regular basis but at least my mom takes pity on me from time to time :)

What yummy food have you stocked up on? If you lose power, what is your protocol? You have a fire place and can you heat food up etc. I remember your electric cook top pix, just wondering. God Bless!

I think you made a wise choice.. beautiful images vs. cleaning. You may be stuck in the house for a while with plenty of time to clean.. or read, or knit!
I hope the storm turns out to be a lot more mild than they anticipate. My step mom just flew from California to Albany NY yesterday on her first Red Cross deployment.. She is a little scared.. we don't get storms like this in CA. Good luck!

you captured fall perfectly....and i'm so glad you did, as i think you're right....those winds are going to be simply mean :(

i love all the quotes here, kate.....they fit beautifully as a message with your photos....but of course you knew that already or you wouldn't have added them...snort :)

i think that last photo is just yummy !!
BE SAFE......xoox

I love them all. I'll be thinking of you out here in the pacific northwest as I watch the storm blow in on the news.

Batten down the hatches and take good care, dear Kate. I will watch the weather in your part of the planet and think of you all.

You chose well. The dust will always be there when you're ready. Sorry.

Beautiful.

We're just now getting some pretty strong winds, so it's headed your way. Still have power. Tide is over the dock but nothing unusual yet.

Stay safe.

Glad your manor house is up on its little hill. Will be thinking of you out here in California (where we did have a wee little earthquake this morning, I am told). Nothing like what the weather folks are predicting for the east coast. Hope you all stay safe.

You must be in the thick of it right about now. Thinking of you Kate...stay safe! And you sure did capture some beautiful evidence of the all too fleeting autumn leaves. xo

GailO said...

I think you made the right choice! The house can always be cleaned another day but those beautiful autumn leaves and light will be gone soon:) Love the soft golden look of these:)

We have battened down the hatches as much as we can and only hope that the weathermen have over stated how bad this one is going to be. Hope you don't get hit too hard!

houses only get dirty again
I prefer the dirt I know rather than new dirt ;)

I took a lot of fall pics last week knowing that Sandy would make all the leaves run for their lives

stay safe dear lady
hugs to all

Stay safe up there, Country Girl! We are all hunkered down in the DC area... EVERYTHING is closed. Metro rail and bus is shut down pre-emptively. It feels strange now because there's just rain, not much wind. Soon, I hear...

Ah...such dreamy picture!
I would rather have a cleaning person, too, Kate! That is one of my dreams...that and moving closer to our son and his family so I can watch my grandchildren grow up...but neither is going to happen.

Beautiful pictures, and a cleaning lady would be heavenly!

Sigh, what an absolutely gorgeous group of photos. I am sad now that all the leaves have been blown off the trees. But I still feel lucky and very blessed.
