Days Of Our Lives. Or, As The Squash Blossom Turns.

Exactly three weeks ago today, I mentioned in this post [link] that we had some sort of squash plant growing from behind one of the azalea bushes out front.

I guessed at the time that it was a pumpkin, and I’m here to let you know that I was right.

Oh, so very right.

And then I found another one.

And another one. Damn, I haven’t been out here in awhile, I guess. Or I just didn’t notice them because I was always checking the bigger one. They just sort of popped out lately.

And then, lo and behold, I found this one sitting under the bush. And there were two more behind it!

Altogether we have six pumpkins growing from a random vine that resulted from my husband throwing a handful of seeds one day.

And that, folks, is about as exciting as it gets around here most days.

I like it that way, sometimes.

Now honestly, where else can you come for titillating photos and stories such as this? You know you love the thrill-a-minute that it is here!

Hoping you can contain yourselves until tomorrow, my friends . . .

Honestly, I cannot handle that kind of excitement...your news is surely a heck of a lot more exciting than my days have been.

Just have to see the before and afters....from flowers to carving.

I can't absolutely contain myself, but I don't think it is fair that you already know the identity of your mystery plant, and up here in the Adirondacks, I will have to wait God knows how long.
My blossoms are white.....leaves look like squash or pumpkin though.
Strange.
And I agree....most times I LOVE boring.
Yay.

Doesn't Nature do such a wonderful job of surprising us?

These are gorgeous! And unexpected - the best kinds of gifts.

I, too, have such a surprise gift. Out of nowhere (except after we realized we had dumped some scraps there last year it wasn't really out of nowhere except good grief! how can that thing take up root here?) we have a Super Monster Squash Plant that stretches from one door to my parents' next door practically...my mother says it's a butternut squash but I say it's a plant on steroids.

Anyway, beautiful pumpkins, beautiful pictures, beautiful surprises.

Lady you are SET for Halloween!! You could line your driveway with jack-o-lanterns. You've just got to find someone to carve them--oh! you can use all that creativity and PAINT them!

The wonder, the beauty, the flavor all to enjoy because of an "accident"! Are there ever really any accidents?

I would be so excited that I couldn't stand it (really) if I walked into my squash & pumpkin patch and saw such lovely pumpkins. We've had zucchini, one spaghetti squash, and no pumpkins :-( You are blessed! :-) -Tammy

What a treat!

I'm green (or should that be orange?) with envy - our weird weather put the keebosh on my pumpkin plans.

A pumpkin patch, alert Charlie Brown! I love this, its a testament to the wonders of recycling ... toss out some seeds, get back some gourds. Are pumpkins gourds? Will you make Jack'o Lanterns? Will you spill seeds again somewhere else this year? All these questions .. its a very wordy Wednesday and I am reflecting .. come see

About 3 days ago, my pumpkin vine decided to shrivel up and die. (SOB) Oh, and so did my zucchini vine, cucumber vine and yellow squash vine. (SOB SOB SOB!!!)

I love that you're getting so many pumpkins on your surprise vine. My compost that I spread around the vegetable garden also gave me a few surprise plants. And one is a pumpkin, but the darn thing scrambled over the fence and gave the pumpkins to my neighbor! Another one ended up being an acorn squash which is staying on my side thank goodness.

Roll them this way; I hear Shetland sheep love them and they make for good "flushing" food for soon-to-be-bred ewes!

I for one can get very excited about my Pumpkins. I have grown French pumpkins the past two years. The seed came from one I bought in the grocery store and put in my compost heap. Wa-la! Did you know Pumpkins and other squash types have girl and boy flowers?

Donalyn said...

Well I am sorry and I'm not try to make you fell badly or anything, but this really doesn't beat our summer long conversation"
"But what kind of squash can that be?"
"I don't know,you ordered the seeds."
"But you planted the seeds - why don't you mark things when you plant them?"
"I thought I would remember!"
"You never remember! Next year I will make sure everything gets marked."
"You will never remember to do that."
..............
"I wonder what kind of squash that is."
"I'm going in the house for more wine. Want some?"

Look at all those pumpkins! Oh my oh my, you're gonna have fun come Halloween! I know a certain three year old who is going to be envious.

I remember one summer growing up when we had a surprise vine pop up outside our back door. We waited and watched until we finally realized that it was a canteloupe which had sprouted from seeds thrown out! When it finally ripened we all agreed it was the sweetest and best canteloupe we had ever eaten!

So what can we expect from this lovely crop? Perhaps a Jack-o-lantern totem pole or something? You could have a contest-who first guesses correctly what Country Girl does with the pumpkins? V.

Maria said...

I'm sorry. That IS exciting. I never get to see anything growing in my yard.

Sue said...

They really popped up just from throwing some seeds on the ground? And I can't even grow grass...And aren't you happy at the timing of your vacation to Maine....I'm so glad you were there when the weather was good...

I love your pumpkin!

I see something funny growing down by the creek. I think I'll post a picture and see if you can help me identify it.
