Apparently, I’ve gone off the deep end

This afternoon, while busily working at my desk, I answered the intercom phone. The caller ID showed it was Rich, from the business office.

HIM: You’ve gone off the deep end this time, I’m telling you.

ME: What? What’d I do now?

HIM: You’re cracked, I tell you. Cracked.

ME: What! Why?

HIM: Your dog has a Facebook account?

ME: Who told you that?

HIM: I can see him. He’s got a Facebook account. And you told me this morning, ding dong.

ME: Oh, right. I forgot.

HIM: Well, why didn’t he friend me?

Alas, I have succumbed to peer pressure and opened a Facebook account. But I didn’t open it under my own name. I’ve been avoiding Facebook like the plague because it’s just another thing that will involve time spent in a seated position at a computer. And I already do enough of that. Besides, I’d heard it was really addictive, like crack. Or worse, Photoshop.

So I opened the account under George’s name after a friend did the same for her dog, and begged asked me to pleeeaaassseee get George on Facebook. Her dog already had 19 friends and I needed to hurry.

Rich was laughing at George’s profile, after I quickly friended him (he’s happy to be in the loop now) and was looking at all George’s friends and reading his wall and laughing at the fact that the dog admitted eating some pop tart for breakfast this morning.

I just don’t know about this Facebook thing.

Facebook is crazy and has tentacles that go into your mail system and pull up oodles of potential friends for you. Last night, I began clicking on people that I knew, and some blogging friends and did a group friend request. However, I accidentally clicked on one of my sons and after I realized I’d made the mistake, I wrote him telling him he didn’t have to friend the dog. (My sons don’t share their Facebook accounts with me and I’m fine with that).

To my surprise, rather than responding to the e-mail he friended George back. And then sent him a song he’d recorded. Unfortunately, I can now see my son’s wall. And his pictures. And holy hannah, let me tell you, it’s more than I wanted a young dog to know.

So I’ve gone off the deep end. I just needed you to know that.

What’s the world coming to?

Welcome to Facebook, George! I resisted as long as I could, but found so many long-lost friends, that I am loving every minute of it, now!

Deb said...

What were you thinking? Your going to spend more time at the computer now keeping up with all of George's friends on Face Book. He's going to be one very popular canine :)

Country Girl said...

I don't know, Deb. Already it's 10:30 at night and I haven't even had time to read my book. My dog's friend count is growing as I type. What WAS I thinking?!

You are absolutely right....the info on your kids alone is enough to send a mother to the hospital...mental ward, please.
And FB is addictive...no doubt about that....sorry that it happened to you too...smiles.

Actually, George is already on YouTube. There's a couple of clips of him here in this one, along with some photos:

I am not friend of my son on FB, but I am friend of his wife, my DIL, which allows me to see her friends' photos (= my son). Uffda. Wish I hadn't looked.

Peer pressure. The dearth of us all.

I know it's a bad day when my dog has more to say than me. Soon he'll have more friends, too. Sigh.

OH DEAR... add me to your friends list! http://www.facebook.com/BGgarden

I love the images of your pup. I left Olivia behind when I went for my walk in the woods today because she always scared the ducks away. AND LOOK..... I still didnt' get a photo of those 'dang' ducks.

I hope you will stop by my winter walk. Happy New Year !

Hahahahaha...It's true though, I'm totally facebook addicted- resist if you can!! I think I've got my dogs on facebook too- they call it dogbook...but I don't quite understand their pages as much as I do mine..will have to look for George- is it just george? Maybe it's easier if you add me or my dogs? I add EVERYONE..LOVE facebook..but mostly I have dog friends on there and only a handful of blog friends..and honestly, I probably know 10% of my "friend" there...hahahaha..but who cares..it's fun!!! It's kinda like the blog world only it goes faster...

Julie Harward said...

THAT IS TOO FUNNY! WELL, ALL I CAN SAY IS, "I HEARD THAT FB HAD GONE TO THE DOGS", SO I GUESS THIS PROVES IT! LOL (but my heart belongs to blogging..much more fun!) :D

Facebook is bizarre! I've connected with old high school friends, it's fun to follow their lives, but very weird because I like never see or talk to them. Except at my 20 year reunion which I had this past fall. Anyway, this post cracked me up. I am a much bigger fan of blogger than Facebook. I skipped My Space altogether. I do NOT Tweet- yet. Just can't get myself to go there, and, I haven't signed up for any, either. But I suppose I will succumb at some point....

Mary said...

OMG, you are too funny! Of course you realize George is going to be so popular on Facebook that he will end up on The Today Show or something...

YIKES! I have avoided Facebook like the black plague. I barely have enough time to blog. According to my friends who are on Facebook, it is VERY addictive! I just can't add something else to my already busy life. Good luck!

My mom has a facebook account so I can't say things like "drank too much" or any curse words because then she gives me the Mad Mom look and I can feel it through the computer screen. I love my mother but I don't want her to say "I didn't raise you to talk like that" in front of 200 people.

Oh, I needed that laugh. Thanks for the joy you add with your incredibly funny perspective on life.

How sweet that George has his own facebook page. I am here to tell you facebook is like crack. I am proud to say that I haven't been on my page in two weeks now. I had gotten to the point that that is all I done all day long. Seriously. My home looks so much nicer now and I am actually doing things like painting and glazing furniture. LOL.

The Weaver of Grass said...

There is nothing wrong with going off the deep end, Kate. If you stay in the shallow end all your life you miss a lot of fun. Looking at George in the photos I would say anybody would like to be his friend.

The JR said...

I don't face book or twitter. It's all I can do to keep up with the blogs I follow and type posts for my own.

Love that gorgeous dog.

And now there's Twitter with all it's Tweets too...I agree - social network overload!

Too funny...Now I want to get my Boston Terrier, Sara, a FB page so she can friend George....LOL

Brenda Pruitt said...

Oh, how funny! Well, I'm not going to do the Facebook thing. I flatly refuse on the grounds that I spend too much damned time on the computer as it is. And maybe, just maybe, I don't want long lost people finding me. Maybe I just want to retain what computer dignity/anonymity I have left and not be on someone's wall, for heavens sake. But that George will have his filled up in no time. Might even find himself his one true love and take it into his head to start over someplace new. I like some bones to remain buried. Don't know about George.

Oh no. You know what this means, don't you? George, Dora, Maddie? I am keeping Riley off the computer until those invites cycle down my page a bit - I will never hear the end of it!

George please don't play all those Facebook games...farkle, cooking stuff etc. and then post them BECAUSE nobody cares and besides you have a life. George remain sane and do all the doggy stuff you like to do. Don't get sucked in with some of the facebook stuff. In the meantime what's your link as I'm sure Seamus would like to be your friend.

The blog world will all remember the day George got his own Facebook page. And it was good.

Just as good, though, is the conversation with your person at work. How I ENVY people with internet access at work!

Does George want to befriend a goose? I was telling Dora she should look up Gustav's fan club page or whatever it's called. Although quite honestly I'd hit the "ignore" button if Gustav the Killer Goose wanted to friend me.
