Storms hit area

The day dawned chilly on Sunday and the skies threatened rain all day, while thunder rumbled off and on in the distance. At one point, we heard the rain coming as it crashed through the woods and then it poured in torrents, lasting a full minute with the sun breaking out immediately afterwards. Several hours following this, however, late in the day while supper was roasting in the oven, a severe storm hit, pelleting us with hail and huge cracks of lightening that sounded like they'd take the house down.
I took this picture from my the sliding glass door in the bedroom. Can you see all the hail on the ground? George ran and tried to hide, but I comforted him and told him it was okay. My husband didn't agree. The owners are away on vacation this week and he's been left in charge of the whole farm. He was so nervous about the horses being out in this, that he took our Element and went out to check on them. During the storm. Luckily, all seemed ok. Horses were taking shelter and the dogs were quiet. The storm lasted about a half hour, continuing to pellet our house with hail. Surprisingly, we didn't lose power. By the time the rain was finished, we ate our dinner and then my husband went out to survey any damage and check on all the animals. I followed a few minutes later. As I left the house, I noticed right away that many of my potted plants had been damaged severly. Their leaves had been torn through and some lay in shreds. Eventually, I met up with my husband, who told me that the sunset against the barn was a beautiful sight and maybe I'd want to get a picture of it. Then he went on his way. I took a picture of him walking away just because I felt like it.

He was right. The back of the barn did look pretty.

You probably can't tell, but this horse is still really wet.

As are the ponies. They're soaked through.

The barn cat's dry, though. He came out when he heard my voice.

Anyone else have any severe weather in your neck of the woods?

Until tomorrow, my friends.

Oh my glad you are all safe and sound. Horses as well. That first pic of the hail on the ground I thought was rain standing. Lots of hail came your way.

Wowee! Looks like an icemaker went berserk out there! What a terrible storm! Glad you, and the animals are OK. Sorry about your pot plants. :(

Everybody's ok and it's late at night and I had to close the windows for the chill! And reading Pat's comment, I wondered "did I say that I had pot plants growing outside?" So I had to come back into my blog and read it. I was worried there for a minute.

Nope not today - for the first day in a while.

That barn cat is smarter than all those horses!

Oh my, those pieces of ice look pretty but ferocious. I've only experienced hail when I was studying in the UK. We don't get it here in Singapore. It can really hurt though, I remember being frightened the first time I got hailed on. Glad everyone's safe on your farm!

We got a really bad line of storms and cool front come through about 10pm EST last night...maybe the same storm...anyway, we opened the front and back windows and got this awesome breeze through the whole house...you could hear the waves crashing and the thunder rolling...what a great way to go to sleep.

We never got our promised storms, but I am glad you are all well. Weird weather this year for sure...

Glad you came through it ok! We had one storm after another all weekend - like we needed any rain at all to begin with. Last summer the hail made confetti out of my hostas, but so far this year I have been fortunate.

We had storms all weekend on and off, but the worst was yesterday afternoon. We had a bolt of lightening hit right next to the house: It made me jump! My dogs were busy hiding under my sewing table.
Glad you guys came through it all right.

Wow, at first that hail looked like white petals from a shrub or tree littering the ground! Yes, we did get some thunderstorms, but none as severe as yours. Woke up this morning to fog (I love fog) and now the thunder is rumbling. My daughter is at soccer camp, and I'm waiting to get the call to come pick her up because of the weather...

Glad you are all right. Love the picture of the barn cat! :)

I'm so glad that you didn't have any major damage. We've had some crazy weather in Utah too. I've heard the Emergency Broadcast System go off 3 times this weekend, but all the warnings were either north or south of us. Luckily the worst we got was some loud thunder and a little rain. ( I was worried about our horses too though, with how loud the thunder was, but it didn't seem to spook them as much as it did me.)

We had gusty winds on Saturday which took the deck umbrella and turned it into kindleing. Other than that the sun is now shining in the northwest and it's stickin around. Your place is just beautfiul despite the recent bad weather.

Happy Monday!

We never get storms like that in the summer, but now you know your roof doesn't leak!

Glad all the animals made it but sorry about your plants. That hail was just massive!

Unusual weather always makes for some interesting photos. As does the late-day sun.. especially after a storm. Beautiful shots all around. I'm glad all were safe.
