And the answer is "D. It is destiny."

I saw a movie over the weekend that left me in such a feeling of pure joy that I had to share it with my friends. But I'm not a writer of reviews, and feel as though I won't be able to do it justice. All that I can honestly do is to tell you how I feel and that'll have to suffice.

Directed by Danny Boyle (and Loveleen Tandan: India), Slumdog Millionaire is the one movie (besides Benjamin Button) I'd wanted to see over the holidays. I went with my friend, KathyJules. We've always gone to movies together.

There were only 6 other people in the theatre on Sunday morning, which surprised me. It sold out both Friday and Saturday night, I'd heard. We'd both read the plot, but little else, so we were not prepared with some of the horrors and atrocities that gripped us from the very start of the movie and kept us on the edge of our seats throughout most of it. I don't want to put you off about it because the rewards are great. There is love, and laughter and absolute joy.

Slumdog Millionaire is the story of the life of an impoverished Indian teen named Jamal Malik, who becomes a contestant on the Hindi version of "Who Wants to be A Millionaire?", wins, and is then suspected of cheating.

The film takes place in India, and it's not the India we've seen portrayed by the media. These are the slums and the conditions are shocking, although at the same time it's amazing how resilient small children can be when this is all they know. And the story of two little boys and the girl they befriend will stay with you without haunting you.

And the end . . . all I can say is that when we left the theatre, we were crying with joy. And I wanted to go out right away and buy a yellow scarf.

Until tomorrow, my friends . . .

Kate, Where is that mosaic maker site you use? I was trying to find it but can't seem to find it.

Thanks,

Thank you for the smile this evening. Nothing better than a great movie or book to keep you afloat for a few days!

Just an aside: Before you take all the kiddies, grandma Gertie and the whole family to this feel-good movie, please note that it's rated R for a reason. It's rated that way because of the violence, several disturbing images and the usual foul language.
Just so's ya know, k?

Doughboy and I enjoy going to the movie theater. Recently we're seen several good films - Australia, Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and 7 Pounds to name a few. I haven't heard of Slumdog Millionaire. It's one we will add to our "must see" list. Thanks for sharing!

We rarely go out to movies, but do watch quite a few at home. Will have to keep an eye out for it when it hits DVD stage.

Emily, I know! I didn't hate Benjamin Button as you did, but I didn't feel anything at the end of it. At the end of this movie, I felt overwhelmed with joy and continue to talk about it and think about it (in a good way!)

I am sure that did you a great deal of good - a total relax in the cinema and you seem to have really lost yourselves in the plot. Shall watch out for it.

I don't even want to peak. I want to save it.

And here I'm wondering for the first time in a decade of a time that will come when my husband and I can hold hands and watch films together again. I mean, we could do it now but watching Shrek upteenth and juggling popcorns and hankies is just not the same.

Missed this on over the holiday but did get see the Curious Life of Benjamin Buttons. It was long and boring. Brad Pitt was wonderful to look at though.

I had seen an interview with the two young stars and was very intrigued. I don't usually watch R movies, but there is the rare one, and this might be it. I like movies that I watch for a couple of hours and talk about for days!

I loved the dancing in the end credits. And I thought the ending was just too fairy tale and contrived (especially the part with the brother). I also thought Malik, the adult. was too two dimensional, except when he was being tortured. The child actors were phenomenal. Otherwise the movie just tore me apart. Loved it.

I saw the Golden Globes when this was announced. Very moving. :)
