A light exists in Spring

You know what I love? I love a nice, long, slow spring that gently eases into summer and I can’t remember the last time we had one so sweet. What a beautiful weekend it was here in Maryland, with temps in the mid 70’s.

On Saturday, I did some much-needed cleaning. And then I got to work washing and packing freshly-picked lettuce from our garden.

I used to have two friends who each owned local restaurants and can remember several springs when I dropped off coolers full of fresh lettuce.

But over the years, each of them have closed or sold their restaurants.

So now I take the extra lettuce to school and give it to friends.

The lettuces are sweet and tender and we’ve been having salads every night to go with dinner.

Our salad  Saturday night, before I added the roasted sunflower seeds.

I wanted pizza, so I picked up one of those Freshetta Artisan pizza crusts from the grocery store and my husband made a spring vegetable & cheese pizza.

I’d never had asparagus on pizza before and am here to tell you that it’s really yummy.

Here it is, ready to go in the oven. I highly recommend this easy meal which we enjoyed while we watched the Kentucky Derby.

On Sunday, I spent the day working on potting some flowers and cleaning up outside and was happy to hear from each of my sons. My youngest prefers texting and keeps it short and sweet and the oldest likes to call, usually when he’s out and about. They also sent my flowers ~

They’re beautiful (as are my sons).

Hope your weekend was a pleasant one. Tonight we’re watching the finale of  The Amazing Race, which is supposed to be a photo finish. Woot.

Until tomorrow, my friends . . .

Wow, it seems very early to be picking lettuce. Do you have a greenhouse?

No greenhouse. It's perfect weather for lettuce right now. It's coming in strong and he always plants too much.

What gorgeous photos... they just want me to reach across the screen and eat the delicious-looking nibbles! The lettuce looks beautiful. It must be so satisfying growing your own stuff.

Spring has been so lovely here as well and a real blessing. The sunshine makes all the difference. Europe had a very hard, long, cold winter so to have a little sunshine is simply wonderful. Just makes me itch to go outside for some photography :)

Have a lovely day!

ooh YUM!!! I'll have to try that.

We've got lettuce growing too, and will provide some to the local restaurant here in town. Your work buddies must LOVE you for providing the fresh produce :-)

Sweet and tender - that's how I would describe your blog too! Sometimes I come here for inspiration, sometimes to look for more lovely birds and flowers, sometimes for pictures of George to make my heart ache for my dogs.....and many times just because you write so cleanly and your photos are so full of light. thank you for being you and sharing here Kate x

I am SO with you on the long, lovely spring. Spring usually hits the Midwest like a Mack truck. I've relished every minute of this year's gradual arrival.

Happy Belated Mother's Day. If you're harvesting lettuce, your season is way ahead of ours. Still very cool and wet here.
