It could have been worse

First of all, this was not the post I was intending on writing tonight.

I want you to know that I’ve always wanted to be elegant and gracious. But I am clumsy and foolish. And rather than sitting here with my leg propped up feeling sorry for myself, I’m wondering if the little poster I made here is really true.

Does every cloud have a silver lining?

DSC_0102 copy 2

This evening after dinner, I headed down the driveway to take some macro shots of the only bit of queen anne’s lace that’s growing on the property. They make lovely subjects, you know. I remember slipping into my sandals and thinking I should wear something more appropriate, but nah (I thought), it’s just down the driveway a little ways.

The torn up, beat up driveway.

So there I was with my camera slung over my shoulder, my trusty dog next to me, and I was singing a little song to him that I often sing. I like to use a Russian accent because it sounds better that way and George wags his tail when I do the Russian bit.

Oh, God. I really am crazy.

Anyway, there I was, walking, singing to the dog, not watching where my feet were going when I took a mis-step on a rock, my second fall this summer alone, and although only seconds went by, I feel like it’s still playing slow-motion in my mind. I landed on my camera and heard it crash but was more concerned with the pain that was shooting up my knee because that’s what took the full brunt of the fall. There was no calling my husband; the air was on and he’d never hear me.

And you know George doesn’t do the Lassie bit.

I managed to make it up and then to reach down and pick up the camera, which turned on and didn’t look too beat up. But I could hear glass. I didn’t care because I just wanted to get home, to take care of the awful pain.

To make a story that’s already too long short, my camera works. But my macro lens is toast. Time will tell if I’ve done anything bad to my knee, but for now, it just looks like it’s been rode hard and put back wet.

My husband has asked me when I intend to begin learning from my clumsy mistakes. And it was so . . . just exactly what I wanted to hear!

Not.

He did bring me ice cream, though. And more ice.

Until tomorrow, my friends . . .

That should say Clumsy Girl rather than Country Girl.

Ice cream - the perfect make-up gift when we guys speak before thinking (which is pretty common, so I am told).

Sometimes you wonder, don't ya? Why do husbands say stupid things like that, when you are in pain. They want to remind you that you did that back when, they want you to admit that you made a MISTAKE, again.
Husbands. Men.
I know you are sad about your macro lens, but it is your knee that worries me......me of the bad total knee replacement, I urge you to baby your knee.

Kate,
Sorry to hear about your fall...I hope your knee will be fine with some ice and rest....I took a nasty fall walking my dog a few years back but the worst part was getting up and realizing people on their porch had watched the entire fall....I felt ridiculous and so did the dog!

Oh Kate...I'm so sorry about your knee AND your beloved macro lens. :(
I can totally relate as I am as clumsy as they come (and I'm a former dancer...dancers are the worst, go figure!).
Eat more ice cream. I'm sure it has medicinal properties...it just HAS to! Hugs.

Hi Kate, I was searching for the difference between a yellow cosmos and a marigold and landed on your blog. Sorry to hear about your fall. I love your photos of George. He reminds me of my Clifford.

Oh, dear, Kate! I can't believe you've hurt yourself again. I'm so sorry! Poor George is gonna get an inadequacy complex. You might want to think about one of those alert buttons that he can hang on his collar. Then, when he's standing over you wondering what all the drama is about, you can push a button and summon help instead of dog sympathy.
(Although, I have found that there is great value in dog sympathy.)
Hope you're feeling better soon!

Oh no, I am sorry to hear about your fall. Hopefully your knee is just a bit bruised, and nothing more serious. I would be devestated about the lens too.
I just about took a big spill this weekend, backing up while taking my neice's picture, I did not see the step behind me. It was a shock but I managed to get my balance back. So grateful I did not fall and do a nasty to my camera.
Get well soon, hope you can replace your macro soon as well.I enjoy seeing those photos!!

Oh dang it!!! Hi there, I have been away and I have missed you...so sorry to hear about your fall, if it makes you feel better, my husband fell down the stairs!!! He had let the little dogs in, shut off the lights, reached out for the stair post, missed it and "tumbled" all the way to the bottom! I am in the other room, didn't hear a thing...I could not believe it, he could have been 1. dead or 2.laying at the bottom with broken somethings! Anyway...I sure hope you recover quickly...now I need to catch up on your posts..take care my friend!!! ;D

Oh I hope you knee feels better!

Your day sounds a lot like mine...

My husband left me alone up at camp (our cabin in the woods without power, water, or civilization within MILES) while he ran back into town to get a part for the weed trimmer he broke. I said I would stay behind, alone, and finish mowing the overly tall grass. Just minutes after he left I stepped on a ground hornet's nest and was attacked. They stung me over half a dozen times all over my body. I was lucky I wasn't stung more... It sucked being alone and stung. Thank God I'm not allergic to bees. That's my silver lining. You'll find yours :)

Aw C. G. I'm sorry to hear about your misstep. Remind me to tell you about a certain husband who cracked his wrist this weekend while dancing at a wedding reception.
Hope the ice and ice cream help. Keep me posted.

Oh no - so sorry to hear about your knee, your lens and perhaps most of all the "You didn't step on my watermelon (or cantaloupe?) plant again, DID you?" response from Husband.

Would have killed to hear the singing with the Russian accent.

I say use that accent on Husband next time. It might scare him into thinking you may have had a brain injury in the fall. This can work to your advantage, you know.

Oh no! Your poor knee, your poor lens...I hope your knee feels better soon, I don't know what to say about your lens. Ugh. I am a completely clumsy girl myself. When I was a kid my mom always said I would trip over the pattern on the kitchen floor. It's true.
And you totally killed me with the Russian accent thing...
Smile. But seriously, hope you feel better.

The worst part is that we just don't bounce like we used to. I've always careened around, giving myself bruises and twisting my ankle. Now I think, "One of these days I'm going to fall and BREAK something." Here's hoping nothing broke but the lens -- that's "ouch" enough.

Kate, I'm so sorry. I fell last week in the parking lot at the grocery store and two guys in a pick up truck laughed..never got out to help me. I'm still bruised up. My friend fell in the bathtub. All that just to say, you're not the only person but I did NOT have my camera with me. Yes, it's only a lens...ONLY?? Heal and deal later.
Best to you.

OMG, Kate!!! Your knee AND your macro lens?! I'm SO sorry, and I hope that the knee thing is just a tiny hurt now and not a long term thing...

I think you need to rest, eat more ice cream, and make a video of you singing in a Russian accent and post it here...

Well, maybe not the last one, but... hey, loved the ridden hard reference. :)

Leslie @ Farm Fresh Fun said...

Sure hope that ice cream worked wonders on your knee and ego. I love the singing n sandals as you set out to capture flowers w/George. I don't think you're clumsy ~ being a country girl means you often take a beatin' outside... AS I unloaded a pony Sat I slipped on our ramp, fell and (being too stubborn n ill prepared w/no lead) hung on while I was drug down the drive. My left knee is tore up. The pony got away anyway. sigh My thoughtful family just laughed.
Sorry bout your lens tho! I love your pics and look forward to seeing more w/your new set up.

I have to say ice and ice cream not to mention polysporin fix a lot of things! Stay safe and glad your only hurt a little and that your camera is okay too.

Sarah said...

Oh, so sorry you've hurt yourself again! Having just taken a nasty fall myself earlier this summer, I can feel your pain - especially the continual replaying of the fall in slow motion. Try to put that out of your mind as soon as possible. I wish I could think of you being home today to enjoy this nice rain and letting your knee begin to heal, but I'll bet you're at work! Do take care.

Daryl said...

OMG! I hope its not the same knee .. and bugger life lessons ... I feel your pain so much because I am truly a klutz .. and have boo boo scars on both knees to prove it ...

The macro lens being toast is very sad but you can borrow mine for as long as you like .. you use it so much better than I ... xo

Linda said...

Ah yes, the sensitivity of a husband. Don't you hate when they do that? But I'm betting that second bowl of ice cream got him out of the dog house:)
Hope you're feeling better today.

Cindy said...

I think you're misfortunate fall rubbed off on me. Lol. I went to the vet this morning with my two large labs and due to their excitement they caused me to lose my balance and down I went. Landed on my right knee, left hand and then right hand and got a couple scrapes from a chair. I'm starting to feel it. I had visited your blog earlier and read about your fall. I had no idea I was in for the same. Don't these things come in threes?

I hope you feel better soon. Enjoy your day. And I don't think you're misfortune rubbed off on me. It was just a coincidence. ~Cindy

Oh, if we could turn back time, just those few minutes would make all the difference, wouldn't they? That said, I do believe in silver linings. Hi Kate,
So sorry about your fall, but glad to hear you're okay. I must admit I laughed out loud tho when you admitted that George "does not do the Lassie thing." Oh, how I can relate! I have 3 of those myself, whose philosophy of life seems to be "every man for himself!" Enjoying your blog immensely. Be careful out there!

The JR said...

I'm sorry to hear you fell again. But, thought that you and I must be related. I can fall over a blade of grass.

I'm such a klutz. Like I really need to be around 1000 lb. animals with my accident prone self.....

Hope you are better now!

Thistle Cove Farm said...

It's NOT a clumsy mistake; it's an Accident and there's a huge difference! As we age, our balance tends to get a bit wonky. I've taken a few falls but "enjoy" the ones in the winter best...those are the ones in deep snow and don't hurt...HA!
As to the leg...RICE...rest, ice, compression and elevation will help it feel better. Bet the ice cream helped too.

Lili said...

Oh no! The ice cream is definitely the silver lining in this case, right? That had to be a sickening sound to hear broken glass and for your knee to hit so hard against the pavement. But you've made me curious, just what was that song you sing to George with a Russian accent? And I hope by now you are in less pain Kate! ~Lili

I always carry my cell phone in my pocket. My husband says "I'm an accident waiting to happen". So I'm prepared in case I need to call someone..
Ice cream is good.. Take good care of that knee.. ice is your friend.. get out a good book and relax and take care of yourself. Seems like when one hurts themselves one can always think of a 1,000 things that needs to be done.. Then you have to cancel that thought and focus on getting better. Ta Ta For Now~!

Oh my word! What tough luck in both respects, the macro lens as well as the knee. The lens can be replaced, although who likes spending the money. Just hope the knee is something that will heal and not require a doctor's visit or worse yet, surgery.

I'm having a hard time accepting the fact that I seem to fall more! It can't be age can it?
A few years ago I fell on the ice while taking a walk. I laid there for a few minutes and watched cars look at me and zip by.
I'm guessing they thought I was either drunk, or taking a rest on the ice?!
I finally hobbled home without the kindness of others!
I hope you heal quickly!
